Advantages: Quality journalism
Disadvantages: London middle class bias
There is only one newspaper worth buying in England and that is The Guardian. The paper maintains a very high quality in terms of the writing and the photography but more importantly the journalism overall presents a much more balanced view of what is going on in Britain and in the world. This is achieved by the range of writers and commentators that are invited to participate in the publication. One reason for this is that The Guardian is controlled by the Guardian Media Group's Scott Trust and not an authoritarian new born Christian lunatic. There is therefore no editorial dictatorship as with the Sunday Times. The Guardian is not simply a ‘Liberal Lefty’ newspaper as it is often criticised as being largely illiterate types (usually readers of The Sun and the Sunday Times).
Like man of the former ‘quality’ broad sheets The Guardian recently abandoned its broadsheet format and now comes out in the smaller ‘Berliner’ format. I preferred the older version but I guess the new format enables a more ‘comfortable’ reading position. The photography is now all in colour which I don’t think is always a better choice than black and white.
There is an excellent Comment and Analysis section that receives contributions form a range of different writers. This tends to be in depth and not light reading but you don’t have to read everything! You have to remember that one article in the Guardian is more informative and useful than the whole content of a tabloid newspaper. The paper is very informative regarding environmental and international issues.
The sports section is excellent and even if you bought the paper just for the sport section, especially on a Saturday, then it would still be worth buying. There is a sports section everyday with the emphasis of course on football, rugby, cricket and racing.
There are different supplements issued along with the newspaper everyday. My favourite used to be an excellent IT supplement on a Thursday which has unfortunately recently been reduced in content. Here you will find information on the latest technological innovations, gadgets and gizmos, news breaking stories regarding the IT industry and game reviews etc.
The TV and media Guide comes with the Saturday edition and is an absolute necessity for the rest week. I always find the TV and film reviews very informative and often quite accurate.
Perhaps one negative point about the paper is its overly middle England perspective but this can be said of most of the British media – which is probably an inevitable outcome given that most journalists higher up the ladder are living on far better salaries than a large proportion of the population. There is also of course, as in all national British media, the London bias.
The only major bad point about The Guardian is that there is no Sunday edition. No Sunday newspaper comes near to The Guardian’s high standards.
Price during the week 70p – worth every penny
Summary: The best newspaper in England

aoife74 - 21/06/06 I teach English in Italy. I'm a member of a site which prepares extra material for teaching & every so often I get e-mailed an article from the Guardian made into a lesson - it's the only newspaper that is used for this & it really is good. |
