Advantages: Reasonable value for money.
Disadvantages: Too light weight for me.
I couldn't get a copy of my usual daily paper, The Times, this morning. For some reason the newsagent didn't have any delivered. So, I looked around at Mirror, Sun, and Mail, trying to decide which would be a good alternative. All of these seemed fairly light weight and that's not what I like in a newspaper, so I opted for The Guardian.
The first thing that I noticed were the different sections apart from the main paper. I had the Tuesday edition which carries the Education Section. This was quite interesting as I am involved in teaching and found several articles of interest on the teaching of English language, but I wasn't interested in the employment section at all.
There is another supplement entitled 'Link' which is about using technology to teach. There were several good articles in here including one on dyslexia and sections on using the internet for teaching and learning.
The twelve page sport section was of no interest to me whatsoever and went straight into the recycling bin. To be fair, that's just my personal preference. Anyone who is into sport would find this comprehensive and informative.
There was also a thirty-six page supplement entitled 'How Businesses Make A Profit by Putting Everything up for Grabs'. It tells you how to make money by giving things away. There are also sections on health, arts, television and puzzles.
Then, there's the main newspaper. I actually felt a bit cheated here because all the news headlines were exactly as I had read them on MSN. There was no variation and nothing fresh to read. However there were some interesting and very informative articles inside on 'Israel at 60' and the financial news around Yahoo.
Overall this was okay for a quick read but it doesn't have the depth and pith of The Times. I can buy a copy of the Times in the morning and still have unread articles the next day. There is so much more for your money. The Times costs 60p and The Guardian 80p. The first one is by far the better value in my opinion.
There is another consideration here for the politically inclined, of course. The Guardian is what could be termed a Liberal newspaper and The Times a Tory one. In my case politics has no bearing on my choice. I just like a good read and the kind of journalism that gives you plenty to get your teeth into. My brief sojourn with the Guardian didn't do this half as well as my usual read.
Summary: Excellent value newspaper if you like your news lightweight.

fizzywizzy - 09.05.08 I take the Times on a Saturday because It has the best "extras" - the books section is far superior to any of the other papers. But I do prefer the Guardian for news the rest of the week |
