Advantages: Adverts for nannies, tutors etc. Holiday adverts.
Disadvantages: Younger readers might find some of the writing a little dull.
Nannies, Mother's helps, Gardeners, Cooks, retirees, tutors and suchlike people use The Lady to find jobs. The upper classes use The Lady to find staff; and to find holiday accomodation. From the October 10-16, 2000 edition Mallorca: An active retiree/s sought for lovely country house in Mallorca. Ideally suited to persons considering moving to the sun but without the hassles. Free luxury accomodation in return for some gardening and occasional baby/house sitting. You should have an independent means of income... Gabon: One bedroom apartment provided. Governess/Tutor required...work within a fully staffed palace... Friendly live-in nanny/mother's help.... North West London. After school care required... 4.30-7.30...live in or live out... HOLIDAYS: Visiting London? B&B in our charming, peaceful family home.... Visit Normandy...full board and car/driver provided..... Sri Lanka...Beachfront house...sleeps 6... BUT IT'S NOT JUST ADS. There's fashion, cookery, a short story, theatre and opera, finance, book reviews, bridge and crossword, gardening... and other items to appeal to the more mature woman. FEATURES : The achievements of women gardeners, a holiday in Eilat, history.... Some of it seems a little dull, but maybe it is what suits The Lady's older reader. The liveliest article is one on Michael Grade, who, as boss of Channel 4, once faced accusations of dumbing down. He was accused of being a 'vulgarian' and a 'showman'. Mr Grade defends himself and points out that he brought 'commercial and critical success' to Channel 4. So, is it worth buying The Lady? YES, if the adverts appeal.
