Advantages: Middle Ground Music Tech Mag

Disadvantages: Could be bigger

Occupying the middle ground of the Music Technology magazines The Mix offers a more detailed reviews policy than that of Future Music but without the extensive and complete reviews policy of Sound on Sound.

With a cover mounted CD offering product demos, unsigned acts and more often than not samples and music software (demo and full) the package is good although I find myself only buying it when there is a review of a particular product that I may be interested in where as Sound on Sound offers so much information it is an essential purchase every month.

If you already know a bit about music technology I recommend Sound on Sound, if you are a beginner I advise Future Music otherwise the Mix is a pretty safe bet.

If you wanted a step up from these you could also try Audio Media, although it does tend to focus on high-end recording and very little on MIDI / home recording
