Oh, the delights of air - brushed history. Having just written that, the Observer is really an archetypal Sunday offering that takes some time to read given the sheer quantity of information given. Crowned Review The Observer: Try living in the real world, instead of a shell (441 words)
by - written on 21/06/01 (Very useful, 89 readings)
Rating:

Well, after over 10 years of regular Sunday reading, I've finally had enough of The Observer. It may be the country's oldest newspaper, but any sense of dignity or responsibility that may come with that title are strangely absent from this increasingly shallow little rag. I originally began buying The Observer as it is, to all intents, The Guardian on Sunday. Not as right-wing as the Sunday Times or Telegraph, not as boring as the Independent, and not as trashy or lowbrow as the News of the Screws. However, in the 10 years I've been reading it the paper has deteriorated from an intelligent, readable journal into a London-centric style sheet, all ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Azed But Not Confused (1265 words)
by - written on 09/07/01 (Very useful, 163 readings)
Rating:

First published on December 4th 1791, The Observer is the UK's oldest Sunday newspaper, and is now linked with the Guardian in a sort of liberal alliance. So if you're after xenophobia, homophobia, or anyonewhodisagreeswithusophobia you should stick to reading the Mail, Sun, Telegraph or your local paper. Main Section - 32 pages A2 ''''''''''''''' 9;'''''''''' The news section covers stories in reasonable detail with the emphasis on making those stories interesting to the reader. "Focus" gives more in depth coverage of a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Observer: FIRST TO TELL TRUTH ON 9 11 (621 words)
by - written on 11/08/02 (Very useful, 176 readings)
Rating:

Which newspaper was going to be the first to break the story that 9 11 was 'an inside job'? Which newspaper was going to gain a world exclusive? Which newspaer? To my surprise it was The Observer. On 27 Oct 02 the Observer gave us four, yes four, full sized pages detailing the arguments. http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/enemywithin.html The article pieced together all the evidence which had previously appeared in bits and pieces in various media outlets, from Newsnight to Newsweek. According to the writer, it appears that the Bush-cabal had a long-standing plan to grab oil in various parts of the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Thorough and absorbing (292 words)
by - written on 19/08/09 (Very useful, 4 readings)
Rating:

If I'm going to observe (!) the time - honoured British Sunday ritual of traipsing to the newsagents to purchase a paper, it will usually be the Observer that accompanies me back to my abode past occasionally sun-dappled, leafy arbours and scum-flecked roadside puddles. So, with a nice mug of Earl Grey and my comfy slippers back on, I can settle down to digest the happenings both parochially national and grandly global. In addition, I may wish to make my way through the many glossy supplements that can improve my health (mental and physical), take me off to pristine beaches and azure seas, or perhaps introduce me to some gastronomic delight to titillate and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Observer: Sports Section is good. (232 words)
by - written on 11/08/00 (Useful, 24 readings)
Rating:

If you have been to the footy on saturday (or even if you haven't) and you are looking for a good sports supplement to take to the bathroom (!!!) in the morning, then I find that this is good. You get a paper the size of a normal broadsheet on sunday, which is wholly devoted to sport, and about half of this is about football. It's great because it is half magazine half newspaper in style, with articles about players, managers, grounds, etc. as well as the match reports and more regular stories. The pictures are only colour on the covers, but I find this not to be a problem, as B+W can often make pics look more dramatic... and the pictures are very good ...  Read the complete review
