Advantages: Entertaining, Low Price, Easy to Read
Disadvantages: Doesn't Contain All Latest News, Bit Sensational Sometimes
I've been reading The Sun on and off for years now and have never really understood why it's seen by so many as such a controversial newspaper to read. Sure it's a bit trashy - it's a tabloid newspaper after all. But as far as I'm concerned that's no reason not to enjoy the ride!
The Sun has been in print since I can remember and is especially keen on entertainment stories. You can read the really big news bits in it, big political, medical or national news stories but most of the pages are filled with entertainment orientated stories. Things like what Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham have been up to and the latest story on the Royal Family ("shock, Princess Zara drinks alcopop!" and similar).
I'm especially a fan of the "man on the street" opinions they pack the paper with. Like how they ask regular white van men what they think of certain political issues and how they always comment on the big stories with a bit of down-to-earth criticism every day. They always have witty columnists and writers on hand throughout I think. Okay, 'real' journalism shouldn't be opinionated and they can sensationalise stories a bit too much sometimes but again, this is more an entertaining take on current affairs than a real die-hard serious paper.
I like how they use real women on their page 3 too. Page 3 is a bit of an ongoing bone of contention I appreciate as it features a different topless woman everyday. But the shots really aren't anything shocking or distasteful and The Sun make a point of using 'real women' (ie those who are over 18, don't have breast implants and don't have protruding rib cages). I think it's just a bit of harmless fun for the younger lads really and the models used aren't going to cause widespread upset to young girls like some of the surgically enhanced ones can.
You can't go wrong with The Sun for passing forty-five minutes of your day with. It keeps you informed with the big news stories, entertains you with what's going on in the world of showbiz and has some of the best sports pages around for getting the run down on various sports (mostly footie usually).
Summary: At Least it Makes the News Interesting!
