Disadvantages: Genuine News Coverage Is Poor

The Sun newspaper is a daily Tabloid newspaper published in The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland.

It has a UK daily circulation of approximately 3.1 Million which is highest of any newspaper in the UK. It currently costs 30 pence, 10 pence more than its most similar competitor The Daily Star.

The Sun can be characterised by its summing up of national and world news stories in very brief often one or two paragraph pieces but giving far more column inches and even multiple pages to catastrophic events of the day, celebrity or political exposés or particular causes that they endorse.

It is of course famous for its Page 3 Girls, a topless photo of a stunning beauty, the first published being a photo of Stefanie Rahn in November 1970. In some City Of London Financial circles there is what is known as "The Sun Index"; this is a means of determining which way the graph of the day's FTSE 100 Share Index will move.

To measure The Sun Index you simply hold Page 3 up straight and draw a line between the two nipples. This will indicate which way the FTSE 100 market is going to move on that particular day.

This story which is true is an indicator that The Sun has a wide ranging readership across all sorts of social groups. I perceive it as a politically centrist to very slightly leaning to the right fun, entertaining tabloid for the working classes that is so well made and entertaining that all types of people will have a sneaky peak at it even if they won't own up to having read it.

The Sun is now famous for some its front page headlines over the years. The ones I like are "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster" - March 1986 and "It's The Sun What Won It" - April 1992 after the Conservatives had won the General Election having been trailing in the opinion polls against Neil Kinnock's Labour Party at all stages in the run up to polling day.

The Sports coverage is excellent in The Sun and their team of sports journalists usually get the big scoop first, especially in respect of football transfer and managerial movement activity.

The puzzle section is not overly challenging but good enough and the celebrity and music industry gossip is second to none.

Summary:

This is a fun, humourous, easy to read newspaper that excels particularly in the celebrity and political gossip and scandal areas as well as at sports coverage. You don't have to take it too seriously and any occasional political leanings in its journalism are straightforwardly written leaving the reader to make his/her own mind up.

I would highly recommend this newspaper.
