Advantages: Speak the truth columnists, good price, page 3!
Disadvantages: Story content sometimes too short
The Sun Newspaper - what can be said about it but different. If you are looking for a newspaper with in depth political and world news stories then this is not the paper for you. If you are looking for a paper which offers different stories including animals, eating, cuddly toys, people trying to break weird world records and a range of other weird and wonderful things this is it. Don't get me wrong it does cover world issues but not as much as say the Daily Mail and Express, that's not what this paper is about. Its about covering stories for shall we say a more quick read and look at the pictures type reader. There have been times when I have been able to get through this paper in like 20 minutes cover to cover as the stories are explained in the headline and there is no need to read any more into it.
The Sun does have an advantage on many other papers and that is the straight talking columnists including Jon Gaunt, Kelvin McKenzie and on occasions Jeremy Clarkson all who have varied and sometimes worrying issues with the world we live in, but what's great is that they are able to write like this expressing opinions which others myself included may keep suppressed as to not cause a reaction. All areas are covered including housing, illegal immigrants, people on benefits, political issues, Gordon Brown in particular with Mr Clarkson and lesser issues where they are looking to get a few laughs. Gaunt and McKenzie in particular are very good writers and offer a laugh even when talking about a subject matter which you would not expect to get a laugh from.
On the sports side of things that is where The Sun wins for me as in Stephen Howard I feel they have got the best sports writer about at present. He writes as it is and does not beat around the bush and I find many of his subject matters to be different to many others and really do value his opinion. As with most papers they cover all football, cricket, rugby, golf and major sporting going ons from around the world. They also offer in Templegate a great tipster for the horse racing as well as there being tips for the Greyhounds. On a Saturday they offer a great pull out section with football betting tips, exclusive football interviews and views from a selection of sports writers and also a nice pull out on that days horse racing with, for the bigger races, a look at the better horses and their chances but anyone who has a bet may know you may as well just pick a number because in my case anyway with horse bets this means nothing.
I am sure everyone is aware off the world famous page three, which has launched carers for the likes off Sam Fox and Jordan and has produced a conveyabelt of wannabe wags. Mystic Meg has a star signs page and there is a Dear Deride section where readers (or as I sometimes I think Deride writing herself) answers problems concerning people love lives and social issues, which I know this sounds horrible but can be more funny then it is informative. There is also a cartoon page with various strips my favourite being the Striker which follows a football team Warburys progress in the Premier league and Europe.
At present The Sun are backing a very worthwhile cause which is help for heroes which is raising money for our troops who have suffered injuries and various other reasons on the war on terror and I think it's great to be spreading the word through a national tabloid.
Overall this is a quick fix paper which if you know you are going to be sitting in the doctors for twenty minutes is well worth 30p of your hard earned cash. Granted the information content is nowhere as near as the Mail and others but for stories of a stranger nature and for people that just like to look at the pictures this is the paper for you.
Summary: Happy reading!

- 09/05/09 Good review but I hate the Sun. It is a dirt dishing scum of a 'newspaper' that is so far away from journalism it still thinks that big tits are news. Aghhhh! |
