Why do so many people read it? (The Sun)

The Sun is a tabloid newspaper that has a circulation of around 3 million copies a day! It is, in my opinion, a 'trashy' newspaper that sensationalises stories wherever possible. It is very gossip focused, almost like Heat Magazine or something similar, and is typified by short stories. The language used in the paper averages a 9 year old reading age (learnt that in work last week!)

The readership is surprisingly equal with 56% men and 44% women. I find this quite surprising, not leastly because of the page three topless model it includes. Now, when I was a young teen addicted to the idea of porn, I used to buy a Sun quite often. I would cut around the page three girls and lock them all in my lockable money box. I was at that stage when I was too wimpy to sneak a look at the porn mags on the top shelf, and the internet was but a dream back then, so it served a valuable purpose of showing me breasts on a daily basis. I am sure there are many people who have the same reason for buying it, but clearly the percentages show that women are just as interested in the paper.

The main thing I don't like about The Sun is the way the stories are so short. To me, I only want to read around one in ten stories in a paper, and therefore when I find one I am interested in it annoys me if it's so short.

The Sun has a stereotype of being read by builders and the like, and I can say that I don't know anyone who buys it. Of course, I'll read it every now and again (isn't it always the one left in a canteen or train?)

The other thing that annoys me is the simple language - your literacy won't improve by reading the Sun because the vocab is so basic.

The paper does contain most important news stories, but also has a lot of trashy gossip in there too, which is probably where the female readers come from!

All in all, a simple newspaper that seems to be popular beyond what it should be.

Summary: don't bother!
