Advantages: Absolutely none whatsoever
Disadvantages: Where do I start??
I hate all newspapers.
I will read the Guardian and Observer at a push as it 'seems' the least dishonest and biased, and the Daily Record's back pages, as most papers in England don't know what an SPL is, or what to do with one. I hate all newspapers because they aren't newspapers. They are loosely speaking Party Political Broadcasts. I hate the Sun even more because it can't seem to make its mind up about which political party's agenda it is putting forward.
It is so easy to criticise The Sun for the simple language that it writes in and how short the stories are and for the lack of depth. I generally find these particular criticisms come from the academic types who have been blessed with the intellectual tools to work their way through The Times or The Guardian. Often they are not criticising the paper, but its readership for not having the ability (or even desire) to read a 'proper' paper.
Some such academic criticisms, even go as fas as to suggest that papers like this should not exist, but the simple fact of the matter is that I am glad they exist because everyone deserves to have something to read on the train. bus or bog, at a level they are comfortable reading.
So the content isn't deep. That is OK, the paper will be suited to someone who doesn't want deep content.
I hate the Sun because of its sensationalist content - I don't feel keeping the text simple and succinct treats its readership as being stupid, I definitely think sensationalising stories does.
I hate the sun because of its associations with Kelvin MacKenzie. Quite simply he is one nasty, nasty bigotted man.
I hate The Sun for its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.
I hate The Sun because it successfully sold right wing politics to the working class - a generation later we are now feeling the effects of this. Nothing too wrong with moderate right wing politics in the right hands - in the wrong hands it is a powder keg. Same goes for left wing politics in the wrong hands - look at Gordon Brown for example.
Most of all I hate The Sun for those crappy holiday offers where you need to collect all the tokens.
Pffftt!!!
Summary: Bigotted rag!

- 21/10/09 Very good, though perhaps a tiny bit mild in its invective. (Why, yes, I did live in Liverpool for several years.) Every time I see MacKenzie on the telly I have to mute it. |
