Advantages: Sports, it isn't that long

Disadvantages: Simplicity of language, everything is stupidly black and white

I think everyone knows what to expect when they buy the Sun. If you are looking for a newspapers in the genuine sense of the word then don't pick up this newspaper if on the other hand you are looking for something bite sized which is very easy to digest and will probably fit into the same space of time it takes to eat your cereals then look no further.

As you can tell from this intro, I am not a fan of this newspaper but they would of course say they are simply catering to a market. This is true and strictly speaking I don't hate this newspaper but feel that if something is what is deemed a newspaper, then what chance does the reader have of making an informed decision?. The Sun's format is to cover a few serious issues and then pack the rest of the newspaper with trivial story's and a huge smattering of news stories.

The only part about the newspaper I like is the sports section but in truth when i am casting an eye on the sports story's I am not casting a critical eye on things. The Sun is not written by idiots, in fact it is very apparent that the language chosen is chosen for the purpose of simplicity, the vocabulary is not particularly expansive and is very reminiscent of something you would expect a child to pick up and learn without too much difficulty.

When it does provide commentary or indeed report upon a serious issue, it is not only the language which is of detriment to the quality, it is also the very cynical way in which they choose to portray that image. It is very apparent for instance when reading this newspaper that there is no emphasis on investigative journalism so in essence what is presented instead is a very straight forward black and white presentation of any given issue. It therefore becomes a very useful mouth piece for propaganda and reinforces inaccurate or deceptive information.

As for the celebrity issues, well I appreciate that some people really savour reading about the dramas and happenings of celebrity's but as for myself, this is not news. I really have never understood the fervour built up around elevating individuals to some kind of special status and therefore I quickly overlook the many columns which cover in great detail everything new which is happening "to your favourite celebrity".

As something to skim through, I guess I can understand why this might appeal to some people I just hope those people don't consciously absorb the ridiculous simplicity which masquerades itself as news. I know no newspaper is perfect and all have their failings but I really can't stand this newspaper.

You might be able tell!

Summary: I was always told to avoid over exposure to the sun, good advice
