Advantages: You will have spare paper to wrap broken glasses and plates in
Disadvantages: you will be the envy of your friends for reading it. Can you live with that stigma?
What does it say about this country’s inhabitants that the Sun is the top selling daily newspaper? I do not ask this question in sarcasm, it’s a serious one, to make a point. This newspaper has to have probably the least news worthy content in it, and the most gossip content by far. And that’s what, I think, drives us to read it. As a nation we thrive on gossip, wanting to know something about someone famous to share over a pint, be amazed at the sick antics of some mass murderer, be appalled at something someone has done to their lover despite the fact we probably did the same some other time. Think back in your life and imagine how a newspaper might twist a story of yours into something sexy, exciting, gripping, captivating, and then imagine how the famous may feel about their private lives being splashed about. Don’t get me wrong, some of these famous people thrive on gossip about them as their best way of becoming better known and getting a few hundred more people to go and watch their latest film. How many times does a story break just as a new record is to be released. They know just what they are doing. It’s like selling your soul to the devil. Unfortunately while we pay to read gossip, newspapers will sell gossip. And the famous will use them to promote their relevant products.
