Advantages: inexpensive
Disadvantages: unjust, tasteless, degrading
Having spoken to a journalist of The Sun many years ago, I was informed they write their 'articles' to accomodate the reading mentality (of the average national reading ability apparently), which is a nine year old! Basically they write it in idiot terms, which is the most difficult way of writing considering journalists are fully qualified, highly intellectual academics. This in itself afirms their viewpoint of their readers, when they admit in having to undercut their articles in demeaning terms. Hence the tacky cartoons, page 3, and headlines that follow. I personally find it a tasteless, pointless and possibly sexist 'newspaper'. If they insist on degrading pictures of Page 3 girls, they should either introduce Page 7, for equal rights benefit, or quash it altogether. However I think Page 3, and the whole sports section, shows that it is mainly a man's paper anyway. (Okay admittedly that intself was a sexist remark!) but it is true. The Sun cannot change it's status on the newspaper shelf, as it wouldn't be taken seriously as 'conventional' paper, and at the end of the day, this is how it is known, this is why it sells, and this audience it has attracted will continue to buy and support it. And while they are succeeding, however it may be, by whatever terms, they are succeeding well. So ultimately there is no incentive to change it, and us that hate it, shall just carry on ignoring it, but it does not mean, we have to like it!

- 27/05/01 Welcome to dooyoo, a bit more detail on what is contained within a typical paper would help this opinion a bit :) |

- 27/05/01 Good op. I don't read the Sun on a daily basis, but I do like the fact that I can find out news about the Government one day earlier in this paper than any other because of the special arrangement they seem to have. Also, whilst I'm not against page 3 as such, I think it looks out of place and dated in a newspaper today and it ought to be removed for this reason more than any other. |
