Advantages: Some good reporting, Sells millions of copies
Disadvantages: Mindless dumbed down writing, Severe lack of morals, Biased Reporting
We are all aware of what The Sun is, its a paper that has Page 3 models, a lack of ethics and an overall 'dumbed down' tone. But the thing is read by millions, in fact it sells more copies daily than any other paper! So why is this? The answer is simple, people (and I am sad to say my boyfriend is one of them) read this paper to relax and settle down. He claims its not too taxing on his brain (no surprise, this is The Sun we are talking about) but also gives him info on the news. As a straight A student, I trust that he is able to read through the bias and get to the real story underneath, certainly the way he talks about articles suggests this, but not everyone is that bright and thats where The Sun gets its power. As a famous bloke once said 'A person is clever, People are stupid'. Its to true. When you provide a paper with material like this to the masses, you end up with a near zombie nation. It's all been witnessed in facts. Look at the election that is coming up. The Sun has said vote Labour so far, and I bet you half the readers will, despite having never actually heard Tony Blairs voice. They are voting because the paper has said 'he's good'. Look at the Tory Party with John Major back in 1993. They got in then because guess who decided to back them... The Sun. It's accepted that they have great power over the people but their morals also leave a lot to be desired. Let's look at the Stephen Lawrence murder trial for instance. The defendants were aquitted due to lack of evidence and in the true spirit of 'innocent until proven guilty', The Sun accepted this? No. They decided to name the men and claim they were GUILTY! The article also boasted that to sue the paper for libel they had to prove they were innocent. Talk about defying the laws of freedom for all. Needless to say they got a good ticking off and a heavy fine. What about the actu
al writing itself though, for so many people to buy it there must be something good right? Well, again I will say no. The writers are not that gifted, they simply write what they are told and what they think will sell papers. If they think an attempted rape would sell papers better if it was an actual rape, they will twist the facts and bend the storyline. Overall this paper is an appalling piece of drivel that sadly drives the masses. Stalin was stopped when he tried to mislead the people, is The Sun too dissimilar?

- 04/06/01 Excellent op. Well-written and well-balanced. |

- 31/05/01 Good op although I also disagree about the writers not being that great, from what I've heard they have to be very good at their job to be able to write what they want as simple as possible while still containing the point. |

- 30/05/01 Ewww, he actually reads it? I was hoping his op on it was a joke. Good op, as much as I would like to believe you were to hard on 'the people' the analysis of the previous two elections I studied in my A level Politics and degree suggests I'm overly optimistic... |
