Advantages: not too in-depth, quick read
Disadvantages: too much sensationalism, not deep issues
When I buy a newspaper i buy one that i know will provide good information about the days/weeks events. I buy a newspaper to gain useful knowledge and viwepoints on different issues... As you can probably tell, i don't read the Sun newspaper. I tend to go for broadsheets like the Times and Guardian - you get what you pay for. It can sometimes take me a few days to get through a broadsheet newspaper, but in my mind this is value for money. You get in-depth reports on major issues. A broadsheet will devote 1 or 2 pages to issues that are only given a paragraph in the tabloids. So why am I not a fan of the Sun in particular?? I'm far from a prude but it is obviuos that this newspaper is geared towards Men from the blatant publication of half naked women. I have often picked up a copy of the Sun and found an interesting anecdote right next to the half naked female. If they insist on having these women then they should put them on a page of their own! Now down to the content! The Sun provides the main news of the day with a lot of celebrity gossip. It is my opinion that you must take everything in the Sun with a pinch of salt until you get it comfirmed by other more reliable sources. They pay the paparazzi for intrusive photographs and publish them without a care. Why do they do this? Because they know that is what joe public wants, and that they will sell more newspapers with this kind of stuff. I'm not a snob, i don't really see the problem with people who don't want to get bogged down in a newspaper, who just want to know the basic story. The Sun must be doing something right as it is a very successful newspaper. But wouldn't it be nice to have a change from all the sensationalim??? Go on, you know you want to!

- 23/07/01 Good op. I buy the Times but find myself having to buy the Sun/Star/Mirror (is there a difference) now and again just to keep up with the trashy gossip that everyone else seems to be talking about. Cheers |
