The USA Today is the most widely read newspaper in the United States; however, the paper lacks alot of information that many of the major regional papers contain. The USA Today is compact, and contains what many Americans would consider the vital sections: national news, international news, business, weather and sports. I find all of these sections to be lacking something. The sections are quite short in the daily version, and the coverage is not quite as good as the other papers. For example, if a story ran on the first page on the NY Times, Washington Post, and USA Today, the USA Today article may lack many details, will be shorter and written at a lower reading level than the other two papers. Also, the USA Today's national news section contains maybe 5 pages. Each state is alotted one story in the national news that does not make the larger scale stories in the nation. These stories are only a few sentences long, and are often not the most important things going on in each state. Getting the news on TV through CNN or MSNBC would provide better national information based upon a state. The longest section in the USA Today tends to be the sports pages. These pages contain the latest news, scores, league leaders, and upcoming events. As most Europeans know, the focus of American sports leans towards baseball, American football, hockey, and basketball. Soccer does not get alot of media attention though it is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports with children in the country due to its upbeat pace. I wish for a paper I read to contain more substance and less fluff. While sporting news is great, I believe that the focus of a news journal should be all of the news. This is where the USA Today falters.
