Advantages: Good coverage of new releases

Disadvantages: Not much for you if you're not interested in the featured armies

White Dwarf is Games Workshop's official magazine, and every issue contains articles relating to each of their mainstream games, so Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 and the Lord of the Rings game all have mentions.

Every issue is about 150-180 pages in length, and these pages are crammed with battle reports (a turn-by-turn analysis of a fight between 2 armies controlled by Games Workshop staff), modelling and painting masterclasses, tactics to use in your games, new rules, and of course showcases for all the new models that have been released.

The biggest problem with this magazine is that they tend to be themed around new releases, often to the detriment of the other races from the Warhammer universe. For example, when the new Black Templars (a Space Marine army) codex booklet was released, they did a painting masterclass to help you paint Black Templars (hereafter known as BT), a modelling tips page showing how to convert the new BT models, and a battle report featuring a BT army. I feel that they get too excited about their new products, and are too quick to ignore their older stuff. If your favourite army isn't due any new releases for a while, you may be hard pressed to find something worth reading.

That said, if you don't mind reading about new releases, or are considering getting into the Warhammer universes (be it the sci-fi 40,000 type, the fantasy "normal" Warhammer, or the Lord of the Rings range) this is a good magazine. You'll just have to decide whether it's worth the £4.50 price tag when you might only be interested in 10 pages of the magazine.

Summary: Just because it's the only magazine for Warhammer fans, doesn't mean it's worth reading.
