17 Magnetized Nail Polish
Advantages: wow-factor; looks professional; eye-catching but not OTT
COLOURS AVAILABLE: Lilac; gunmetal; blue; teal
PRICE: £5.99 (and for those who don't know, 17 is Boots' own-brand product)
HOW TO APPLY:
Brush on the nail varnish (two coats will be needed) and whilst it's still wet, hover the magnet (located on the cap (separate from the brush)) over your nail. You'll need to do one nail at a time (so don't paint the full set!).
You'll need to keep the magnet over the nail for about 10 seconds before the effect appears. I didn't realise when I painted the first nail that there's a helpful little 'ridge' on the cap which you can place against your finger. It helps to hold the cap steady and avoid the risk of getting too close to the nail with the magnet and smudging your efforts.
Once your nails are dry, apply a top coat.
MY VIEW: I bought the gunmetal shade and was incredibly impressed. The effect is amazing. There's a 'wavelike' contrast between a very dark grey (almost black) and a lighter grey (on the mid-silver side). When you move your hands, you can really see the contrast. My friend goes to a salon to have her nails done and paid a fortune for this effect when it first came out. However, for £5.99, I achieved the same effect (there honestly was no discernible difference). And it's easy to apply - it's not one of those processes that needs a steady hand or any level of skill. It's probably more of an evening-wear polish, but I have worn it during the day and haven't felt that it's OTT. It just adds that certain je ne sais quoi to your nails! And, as ever, the proof is in the compliments - I've had loads of girls ask where I got my nails done! Yes that's right - not where I bought my varnish, but where I've had my manicure done! So that proves that 17 Magnetized Nail Polish does indeed give you a salon look without the salon prices.
DURABILITY: The nail varnish itself only lasted a couple of days on me - but this is about all I get from most brands of varnish (even expensive ones). The only varnish I've found that has any sort of longevity for me is Barry M (but that's another review entirely!). Admittedly, the trick is in layering on a quality topcoat - which does increase the life of your manicure.
CONCLUSION: For the money, this is a fantastic product with a great eye-catching effect.
Summary: Salon-quality nail effects without the prices
