NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil
by nile123 NYX jumbo eyeshadow pencils have been very popular for a long time now and I always thought they were just too expensive to buy. Id see celebrity makeup artists using them, i'd see beauty gurus using them, it just became one of those things that every beauty junkie had to have. I refused to invest in them at first but now, while I am ... trying to expand my makeup collection, I thought it was time I owned one and saw for myself what the hype was all about. I bought the eye shadow pencil in the color milk which is a matte white color, perfect for using on the eyelid before applying shadow. I noticed it had a creamy texture that creased on my eyelids. That wasn't very pretty at all so I used an eye primer before applying the eye pencil which significantly reduced creasing. It made the rest of my eye makeup stand out a lot more. I used it as a highlight on my brow bone and on my cupids bow and on my waterline to brighten up my eye area and give the illusion of wider eyes. It is a very versatile product that can be used in several places on the face during makeup and it is quite flattering. It definitely brightens everything up and gives your skin a healthy appearance when used correctly. I now know what all the hype was about but I don't think it is that special. Its nice to have as part of my collection and I do see myself using it a lot but it's not a must have. You can definitely achieve a lovely makeup look without this eye pencil. The pencil is a bit like a crayon. It is a little chunky and after a few uses, the nib does go blunt so every now and again it needs sharpening. This isn't a problem because most eyeliner pencils do always need sharpening. NYX jumbo eye pencils are priced at 4 pounds and 50 pence which isn't cheap but is a lot cheaper than some of the other eye shadow pencils out there. I didn't mind paying that price for it because at the end of the day you do pay for the brand name as well. Over all, i'm glad I bought it and tested it. It is a nice addition to my collection and Although I don't think it is a staple, I do think I will try out the other colors sometime soon as well. Read the complete review |

NYX Nude On Nude Eye Shadow & Lip Palette
by purplekimmy I have always loved the look of brand new make up palettes, I know they don't stay clean and neat for long once you start using them, but they pull me in and make me want to buy them all the time. When the new Argos catalogue comes out, thats one of the first things I look at, to see if I can justify buying yet another set. I use my ... daughter as an excuse a lot lol In all honesty she does use a lot of my make up! This was one of those impulse buys, I didn't need this but once it had been seen, my eyes and brain couldn't unsee it so it had to be mine. It was what I would class as expensive, £17.50 from Amazon. When it first arrived I was surprised at the size, the idea I had got from the picture was it was a lot bigger. I opened the horrendously brown lid, very 70's there, this is where the first problems occurred. It took a while to work out how to open the lid, it's a bit stiff and even though it stops it from opening and making a mess everywhere, I at least like it to open when I want to use it. It also took a while to work out how to slide out the bottom section to reveal the lip colours. While I was impressed with the array of eye show colours, they were accompanied by the dreaded applicators. The tiny brush for the lip colours is ok to use when out and about, I wouldn't use them for permanent use. The range of colours in the eye shadow section are great, there is a light section with peach/cream/white and light shades, great for base colours or highlighting. Mid range section which covers greys, browns etc and a couple of darker colours for definition and detail. They go on easily enough and don't crease or fade. There is not much fall out either and they blend easily too. Obviously because the squares are small it is a little tricky to get a big brush into the palette to use the colours, you either have to use a smaller brush or your finger which does work equally as well. The powder also works well if used wet, the colours hold and it applies well. I am not so taken with the lipstick/lip colours. They are bright and cheerful enough in their line, all pinks and reds with one brown tucked in at the end. The colours themselves are a little disappointing, but always the same with these palettes. The colours never come out the same colour as they are in their little squares. They are a bit washed out and gloopy for my liking. They make an ok base for other lipstick or just a coating on top of matte lipstick but in general I am not overly impressed with them. The eye shadows defiantly make up for the poor performance put in by the lip colour, not sure that makes £17.50 worth spending on it though. Ok for a gift for someone you like a lot but, would you subject someone you really like to the lip colours?? Read the complete review |

NYX Cosmetics Slim Lip Pencil
by chrisandmark I discovered the NYX range of lip pencils after a friend gave me two when she was working in a local chemist which had just started to stock the range. This was six years ago now; previously I would use Max Factor or Clinique lip pencils, and while these two worked fabulously they were quite inflated in price and when not on special ... offer would cost more than my actual lipstick! My friend had been impressed with NYX pencils and chose Auburn for me as it's the shade which would best compliment my trademark red lippy, but has a vague enough colour that it would be entirely suitable for the entire spectrum of 'reds' which I regularly wear. The NYX lip pencils come in two different length options, at the moment I'm using the 'super long' version but usually buy the standard length pencils and can confirm that the lip pencil is absolutely the same think regardless of which one you buy. It works out more cost effective to buy the long pencil as in the chemist where I purchase mine they're only 27p more expensive for roughly an extra three weeks of daily use compared to the shorter one; I won't be buying the long one again though as it's comedy-length really and I just couldn't get to grips with balancing it as I applied my make-up, I ended up sharpening the life out of it and wasting half of the pencil just to bring it down to a more manageable length! Application is a dream thanks to the very creamy consistency of the pencil; the colour is soft and glides onto my lips, enabling me to follow my lip line accurately or emphasise the cupid's bow of my lips for added 'ooomph' on a night out. I always apply foundation to my lips and feel this helps in particular with this pencil as it works as a primer and allows the colour to transfer smoothly and evenly, this is important not only in terms of application but also improves the longevity of the colour on my lips. I'm always impressed by how long the colour lasts, outliving even my most robust lipsticks by hours - this has good and bad points; the good being that at reapplication time my lip pencil is already in place so a quick sweep of colour is all that's needed, the bad point being that after that one-too-many drinks you'll forget about your flagging lippy and spend time walking around with still-visible lip liner sans lipstick. Very American hooker, and definitely not the look I am ever aiming for! So the key to looking as fabulous at the end of the night as you did at the beginning is sobriety - yeah, right! I love the bold line of colour which appears on my lips from the very first stroke of the pencil; the deep shade of my Auburn pencil accentuates and mistakes or wobbly lines so it's definitely only for days when I have a steady hand, although this is true of any deep/bright red and as this has been 'my colour' for twenty years I'm pretty much a dab hand at applying it without messing up too much! I know you're told to use only the sharpest point to line your lips, but I actually find I get a better finish when the pencil has gone blunt as it doesn't drag my skin to create telltale creases in the line which then have to be painstakingly filled in. When I'm defining or emphasising my lips I find a sharper point comes in useful as it allows me to be specific as to where I want the colour, when I'm bog standard following my natural lip line the sharpness of the pencil doesn't make any difference at all - another point to NYX as it means I don't need to sharpen it as often as pencils from other brands and therefore it lasts a hell of a lot longer! The colour doesn't bleed into the skin around my lips and is also a fantastic barrier product against my actual lipstick sliding off my lip line a couple of hours after application; this is a problem when wearing reds of any shade (although obviously happens with other colours too) because it's such a harsh colour than any vague smudging or sliding will look horribly obvious and leave you looking like a ten year old has applied your lipstick. The lid is the last point to mention, and it's superb. I've never had an NYX lip pencil lid crack or even come off in my make-up bag, which is more than can be said for a recent Benefit lip liner I splurged on - I actually think that pencil has an allergy to it's lid, that's the only thing I can think of to explain the fact that the tight fitting lid comes off within minutes every time I put it away! Not so with this uber cheap NYX pencil, it not only works but also keeps itself in tip-top condition thanks to an excellent design. If you fancy trying this lip liner, and I really do recommend you do, you can find it in small independent chemists - I've yet to spot it in Boots, although a friend tells me she has bought it from there in the past. Ebay also stock a good range, although postage prices are slightly inflated across the board so I'd recommend you have a look around offline and use t'internet as a last resort. I pay £1.99 for my pencils which is incredibly cheap considering what a good job it does and how well this pencil suits my skin, there is a good selection of shades available to suit every skin tone and I honestly can't see why more women don't try NYX out as a replacement to lip pencils which are five times more expensive!
