“ Brand: Alessandro / Type: Nail Varnish / Suitable for: Nails „
When I opened a beauty box a few months ago to find a bottle of Alessandro Pro White nail varnish I was thrilled. I was first made aware of this product around five years ago when looking for something that would make my nails look naturally whiter, but it has limited availability in the UK so I struggled to get hold of it. I'd forgotten all about it, but instantly recognised the bottle when I saw it and was really pleased to finally get the chance to try it out.
This product is designed to make the nails look naturally healthy and the tips white. I wanted this because I often think my nails take on a bit of a yellow tinge (I'm not a smoker, so I don't know why this is) and I wanted a product that would brighten my nails without looking like I was wearing nail varnish.
The polish comes in a small square bottle and has a black screw top lid. The packaging is all very basic and does look rather cheap up close, but I was more interested in how well it would perform, so this didn't bother me too much.
This product can be used on either natural or artificial nails, however I only ever use it on natural nails. It is used like any other polish and simply brushed onto the nails. The polish is clear and a nice consistency - neither thick nor runny. It looks very shiny when it is first applied, but once dry the shine is not so intense.
When I first tried this I felt really disappointed with it. No indication is given on either the bottle or the Alessandro website of how long the results should take to show themselves, but I did expect instant results and didn't feel I had gotten them. As far as I could tell there was no difference to the way my nails looked. I have changed my mind on this though after a recent application. I had applied the polish to one hand and become distracted by the phone ringing. I finally sat back down half an hour later to do the other hand and I could see a noticeable difference to the nails on each hand. On the hand where I had applied the polish, my nails looked brighter and the tips whiter. It wasn't a huge change and I think I probably only noticed it because I happened to be looking for it, but there was a difference there, which I was really pleased with.
On a more negative note, I have found that the polish flakes off quite easily so has to be re-applied every couple of days. Thankfully with the polish being clear it is not hugely noticeable, but I can feel rough patches on my nails where it has come off.
I mentioned that I had a problem tracking this down a few years back and it seems it is still not widely available in the UK. The only place I have been able to find it for sale is eBay where this can be picked up for £3.99.
Overall, I am quite pleased with this, now I have realised that it does actually work! It's a shame that the impact is so subtle, but anything is better than nothing in my opinion. The flaking issue is another annoyance, so I don't think this is the best product on the market - and when I run out I may look to see if there are any alternatives out there - but for £3.99 I would happily repurchase it if I can't find anything similar.
This is a review of Alessandro Pro White Nail Varnish which I received in a recent beauty box to try out. I often use dark colours on my nails which can result in a slightly yellowed nail when you remove all colour which is very annoying when you get them to a nice length. I have been known to cut all my nails off due to yellowing which can be impossible to shift. I have tried whitening nail polish remover and it didn't work for me so I was interested to try Alessandro Pro White Nail Varnish.
Fortunately I received this in a clear colour but you can also get it in other colours and French manicure shades. I like the clear colour as it can be used as a protector as well when in between colours and just adds a little strength to the naked nail whilst working its wondrous whitening magic! You can also get this in clear with a glitter finish if you want something a little bit jazzy.
I wasn't sure whether this nail varnish was just meant to be an optical illusion or whether it actually did help as a preventative measure. A little research finds this: Optically brightening effect varnish with anti-yellow formula. Thanks to a special pigment, Pro White neutralises discolorations on the nail surface, making for brilliant white and nails.
I just paint a layer on to clean dry nails, using it as a treatment every few days. I have found it dries really fast and is virtually invisible on the nail. I did also use it as a base coat when I couldn't be bothered to start from scratch when putting a colour on. One day I was outside and noticed in the actual daylight that my nails had a strange blue-ish tint to them. I presume there is some sort of UV content in the varnish that looks OK indoors but a bit odd outside. After a couple of days I found the clear coat did flake off a little but I'd rather the varnish flaked off than my actual nail!
I liked this product and found it good to use as a treatment. I really don't think there is a lot you can do once your nails 'turn' and go yellow other than grow it out. I have found certain varnishes to be really bad for staining, even some sheer and light shades so always use a base coat now to try and prevent it happening. I found that the Alessandro Pro White Nail Varnish added a layer of protection to my nails and did make them look a bit whiter on the tips.
Price and availability
You can pick up a 10ml bottle of this on ebay at the moment for around £4 which I think is quite reasonable. Beware there may be a few of the smaller sized bottles floating around following their inclusion in the beaut boxes.
This is a good nail whitening product which lives up to the claim. I am not sure what it would look like under UV disco lights though! I think it is priced at an affordable rate and certainly a brand I will be looking out for in the future.
