Advantages: Fun, unique, funky product, quality gloss, nice price!
Disadvantages: I'm not a kill joy, honest, but think some issues should be took seriously.
I had never heard of this brand until last week, while shopping in Morrisons, I noticed a half price promotion. Always one for a bargain, a closer inspection revealed a small range of unique and quirky looking bath and body care products. From the range, which included hand and foot cream, shower gels, herbal bath remedies and shampoo, I chose a lip gloss and eye cream.
Usually retailing at £3, I got them for £1.50 each. I am reviewing The Fruity Lip gloss today, the strawberry milkshake variety to be exact.
~ The Packaging ~
Ok, packaging is usually just that, and not really worth reviewing. However it was the packaging which really drew me and convinced me to give it a go.
All Anatomicals products are packaged in bright colours with humorous names and quotes adorning it. I must say some are funnier than others, some are just outright bizarre! They do have a very unique and designer look to them, although most seem to retail at between £3 and £5, which doesn't seem bad to me.
The Strawberry Fruity Lip Gloss Tube comes in a hot pink cardboard box, and across the front states:
"What a complete and utter glosser
I never fake strawberry milkshake"
(See where I nicked my review title from, sadly I couldn't come up with anything half as funny or clever.)
on the back of the box the quote goes:
" Add shimmer, shine and sex appeal to your lips with this tube. Any man who isn't then begging to kiss them is a....well, replace the GL (which in your case also stands for good looking) of glosser with a T and we think you know what he is."
Well, it appealed to my simple sense of humour and made me giggle!
There's not a great deal of other information on the box, excepting the ingredients (which look reassuringly small and uncomplicated and contains natural sweet almond oil, strawberry and vitamin E), a symbol advising the product has a shelf life of 24 months, a website address and an offer to join Anatomicals on facebook and Myspace. This is clearly a brand targeting a younger market, probably late teens-twenty some things.
~ The Lip Gloss ~
Well, indeed, what a glosser!
The 10 ml lip gloss tube is translucent pink with a clear liquid inside. Most of the quotes and information found on the box are also replicated on the tube.
I could smell the strawberries before even removing the twist cap, it's delicious smelling.
When the cap is removed, I was confronted by a plastic lip stick shaped nossel, with a small hole in it. Applying the gloss was easy, just a little squeeze from the tube and apply direct to your lips as you would with lip stick.
As soon as I began applying this I knew it was quality. It felt instantly luxurious an my lips. It feels like thick satin, and has none of that horrible tackiness found with lots of lip gloss.
Like I mentioned earlier the lip gloss smell is gorgeous strawberries, but it doesn't taste of strawberries. In fact it just doesn't taste of anything.
Going to a mirror to check out it's affect I was very impressed. This doesn't give your lips that high sheen gloss or greasy looking effect, but rather gives it a subtle shimmer...something I much appreciated.
The lip gloss lasts really well too. I have applied it before eating, drinking and smoking, and a couple of hours later, my lips still feel incredibly moisturised.
I absolutely love this lip gloss and use it a few times a day. However it's quite thick and a little goes a long way, so even after 7 days the tube is 75% full. At £1.50 it was a bargain, even at full price of £3 it's still a great buy.

Anatomicals products can be bought at supermarkets, Boots and from the online store at the above website.
Stockists of Anatomicals are listed on the website, so I would recommend checking this out, as the postage costs from the site are a not very cheap £4.50, the only discount being if you spend over £60.
The site is definitely worth checking out. It's fun, has great music and is very tongue in cheek. Anatomicals is definitely aimed at the 'Party/ Festival' generation.
I couldn't find any information about animal testing either on the product, or on the website, in fact there is no serious information to be found on anything!
I emailed the contact address to ask about testing and got this response within 2 hours:
"Our products aren't tested on animals. My family pet dog wouldn't be happy if they were. We don't put it because we kind of assume that people know that most toiletries products aren't tested on animals these days. Our apologies for this."
While happy to have it confirmed quickly, I'm not sure any of us should 'assume' anything, as the dangers of doing so are obvious.
I also appreciate that Anatomicals are attempting to be funny and unique. However, a little seriousness would be nice. For that reason I probably wouldn't order on-line.
~ Conclusion ~
I really do rate this lip gloss very highly. I like the quirky marketing (although wonder at the necessity of the outer cardboard packaging, it's not really environmentally concious is it? that lack of seriousness niggle creeps back in again.)
The performance of the gloss suits me to a tee, it looks and feels like a designer product without the price tag to match.
Some people will possibly find Anatomicals packaging less amusing than me, and there is a chance some fragile sorts may even be offended. I think this (and some other products) would make a great gift though to any party girl out there.
I give this 4 stars. It is almost perfect, and if I could give it .5 more I would. Because of the lack of seriousness on important issues I can't quite stretch to 5.
Summary: An almost perfect glosser!

- 25/05/09 Great review, but I have to agree with plipplop that it's a bizarre marketing technique! |

- 25/05/09 It's a funny old world. If a man's aftershave said on the back that any woman it didn't drive mad was a <insert expletive> the feminists would be out in their droves and yet apparently you're a <insert expletive> if this doesn't turn you on. Double standards, eh? :) |
