A beautiful sheer shade that is let down by poor application and performance

Being a bit of a beauty product addict, I always like to try out new things and vary the brands that I use. One of my most exciting discoveries has been finding online companies that provide beauty boxes. The idea is that you will be sent a box every month, and this will usually contain a selection of various make-up, skin care, fragrance products etc for you to try out, so I have been trying a few from different suppliers. I received a full size bottle of this Andrea Fulerton Nail Color in a previous delivery from Carmine. Carmine have since ceased trading, but you can find further information about the brand at www.andreafulerton.com/.

I love to do my nails and am always looking out for new brands and shades to add to my collection of nail polishes. I give myself a full manicure every week at home, and as I have long nails I like to make a lot of effort to keep them looking neat and in good condition. I've not used any Andrea Fulerton products before this (and probably wouldn't choose to buy any in the future) but they do seem to be easily available, retailing in Superdrug high street stores and online for the RRP of £3.99 for a 5.5ml bottle.

Product description: "Durable and long lasting. Allows nails to flex without chipping. Resin system gives easy application. Apply in one or two coats."

In my beauty box I received this nail polish in the shade "Matthew", which looked beautiful in the bottle. It's very well suited to my tastes and is the sort of colour that I would have picked for myself as it's perfect for all situations and matches well with any other make-up that I may choose to wear. I would describe this as a pale pink with golden shimmer running through it, but upon application the colour is very subtle. According to the latest catwalk trends the nude nail look is set to become very popular, and I think this particular shade of nail colour is perfect for a barely-there hint of colour with a shimmery, glossy finish.

The brush is fairly long which I thought would be beneficial when applying the polish to my long nails, but annoyingly I found that the application was not even and in spite of my years of practice in doing my nails, I have been unable to get good results and am always left with a streaky finish. This uneven distribution is very noticeable close up, although because the colour is so pale it does not look that bad from a distance. The Matthew shade is sheer and does not provide a full layer of opaque colour like you might expect from any ordinary nail polish. Instead, I am still able to see the natural pink and white shades of my own nail beds and tips through the polish. With one coat applied the polish is hardly visible at all, giving the tiniest hint of colour with a shiny finish to give a low key groomed look. With two coats the colour becomes more noticeable, but still retains a sheer effect. 3 coats later and I've reached my limit, the shimmer becomes more dense and repeated coats do help to mask the initial streaky appearance, but there is still no solid block of colour. It takes some time for extra coats to fully set, and it is quite easy to end up with smudges if I am not careful enough to leave a long drying period.

Although this polish claims to be durable and long lasting, I found that this was not the case. When wearing one coat of polish it seemed particularly prone to damage, although instead of chipping like most nail polishes do, it seemed to just wear away, almost as if it has rubbed off somehow. Maybe this is due to the properties of the resin system as given in the product description above, but I thought it was odd. With several coats the polish still seems to scuff away rather than chip, but the colour is not long lasting and also seems to take on a weird dull and milky sort of finish after coming into contact with water, for example when I have washed the dishes or soaked in the bath, and this again seems to hasten the effect of it wearing off.

Overall I feel a bit let down by this product, as the shade is very pretty, but it doesn't perform well enough. The messy application and streaky finish looks unprofessional, and the lack of staying power is a real problem. I think that this sheer shade is quite unique even if it doesn't meet my usual expectations for a full level of colour, however I cannot recommend it based on my own experiences.

        Disadvantages

        a great nail varnish

I love having a bit of girly time and pampering myself and usually when I get a minute, I like to look after my nails. I love picking up new colours and matching them to my make up or outfits. Recently when I was in Superdrug I picked up a few nail varnishes from Andrea Fulerton Nail Boutique and was really pleased with the results.

        Colours Available
I have found that this range comes in a good variety of colours. Some of these include a range of pinks, reds, blues and also a range of different nail effects such as glitter and gemstone effects. I bought the Paris shade which is a kind of raspberry pink shade and the Matthew shade which is a nice pale pink shade.

        Application
These nail varnishes are really easy to apply, I found that the brush is really nicely shaped and it glides over my nails easily without making a mess. The brush is quite small which allows me to be more accurate with this nail varnish, which makes it a little easier to do nail designs.

I found that this nail varnish takes a little while to apply, I would say around 3-4 minutes, so if you are impatient or in a hurry, it might be best to stick to the 60 seconds varnishes.

        Results
I found that this varnish dries nicely and the colours look amazing on my nails, they have a kind of matt look to them, though they also look a little glossy, which gives a nice finish.

This nail varnish has quite good lasting power, I find that it usually stays on my nails for around 4-5 days without chipping, which is handy as it leaves my nails quite low maintenance.

        Price and Availability
You can buy this nail varnish in Superdrug for around £3.99 a bottle. I think that this is a fair price for this nail varnish because it is such good quality and the colours that it comes in are lovely.

        Overall
I love this nail varnish and definitely plan to buy it again. I think that it is nicely priced, looks great and has good staying power, if only it would dry a little quicker when applied. Overall I would give this 4 out of 5 stars.
