Advantages: price

Disadvantages: consistency of varnish

A few weeks back, Asda had their George nail varnish on offer for £1 a bottle. How could anyone say no to such a cheap bargain? I had never tried their brand before and thought it was well worth giving a go at such a low price. (Usually around £1.50 a bottle, still cheap as far as nail varnish goes. Asda tend to do many offers on their own brand stuff too so keep an eye out).

I had a huge ball coming up and found the perfect shade (No8 Blue Lagoon) to add that final touch of glamour to the look. The colour is quite dark, and with darker colours I always apply a clear varnish for a base coat to avoid nail staining. Applied the clear, allowed it to dry and set about applying the Blue Lagoon. This is where my problems started.

The varnish is quite thick, eve when I removed the excess on the side of the bottle; it still goes on really, 'gloopy'. This was causing huge blobs of varnish to end up all over my fingers. I set to work with cotton buds and varnish remover to tidy them up but still, my nails looked like they where painted by a four year old. I removed the varnish in an attempt to try again but it was a toughie! Eventually got it off and tried again but still, the same problem occurred. So I wondered, is it the base coat?

Applied the varnish without the base coat and did get a slightly better coverage, but it was still going on thick! You do not need more than one coat of this shade. I am not a fan of messy painted nails but had no time to rush out and buy a different shade so it had to do. Cleaned up best I could and was thankful the ballroom was dark. When it came to removing the varnish, it was tough and left a lot of staining down the sides of my nails that took a fair bit of scrubbing to get out.

The colour itself is a lovely, almost navy, shade of blue with a shimmer that reflect in the light nicely. If thinned out a little, it would look great.

Had also bought No1 Silver Sparkle, which I thought would be a silver varnish. I was wrong but surprised. It is a clear varnish with silver glitter. On its own, it gives a great, lightly shimmery look. However, teamed with a plain, bright colour, it adds huge glamour and sparkle. This varnish did not go on thickly, and one coat gives a lot of sparkle! It also comes off very easy with remover.

In all, for the price, this stuff is not bad but some bottles are better than others are. It is a great way to get funky colored nails for a low cost. If you change your nail varnish as often as you change your socks, then this brand will save you pennies! It does the job, what more could you ask for?

Summary: Does a good job for the price

Another tip is to keep your nail varnish in the fridge. We keep ours in the draw and it goes on lovely!

If I find myself with a heavy, gloopy nail varnish, usually adding a couple of drops of nail varnish into the bottle and a quick shake does the job of thinning it out.
