Advantages: From the comfort of your own home, cheaper prices
Disadvantages: dodgy colours, rarely get what you want, cheap packagin
My mother has been an Avon Lady and now I have a couple of friends that dabble from time to time and I never seem to learn, don't buy lipsticks from Avon. In principle buying lipsticks from the Avon catalogue makes great sense. There are so many choices of every kind of lipstick, those with lots of moisturiser, those that last for hours, shiny ones, matte ones, you name it they have it. Secondly, they are so cheap. You can get some lipsticks on offer for as low as 89p, which you will never find on the high street. However, unless you like throwing money away, even if it only 89p I would not really recommend Avon lipsticks. 2 instances spring to mind as to why I say this. One time I decided to buy 3 lipsticks from the catalogue, I think they were on a 3 for 2 offer and at about £2.00 for all 3 I couldn't resist. Then you just have to decide on the colours you want. Inside the catalogue you are faced with masses of colours on little 1/2 centimeter sample patches. I find it hard enough to decide on a new lipstick when I am there in the shop testing it on my hand, yet alone when having to decide from a magazine. Yes, pictures in magazines do lie, just being transfered from "real life" to a photograph alters the shade. Anyway, my friend delivered my lipsticks around when they arrived and I found that I was left with 3 of the most disgusting lipstick shades in the world. They were all NOT what I thought I had ordered, most were decidedly orange. As I had ordered them from my friend I felt compelled to keep them and it was only £2 wasn't it? Making the best of the situation I experimented in mixing them together and with other shades I had. I gave up in the end though and saved them for Halloween when we all dressed up! Cheaper than stage make-up I guess. However, the message from that experience is that don't rely on the colour swatches in the magazines to give you an accurate representation of the colour. E! If your Avon lady is one of the ones to have her own kit with testers then that is great and at least then you can see what you are getting. My next experience involves a so called "re-appearing" lipstick. Supposedly when your lipstick has worn off all you need to do it rub your lips together and it would re-appear!! Magic I thought, just what I needed. Again, this was a serious error as I ended up paying around £3.85 for a lipstick that lasted about 385 seconds. So, not only was it no miracle worker, but it was also an orangey shade. Thus from my experience,Avon products in general promise a great deal but fail to deliver. Avon may offer cheao good and all from the convenience of your home, but I advise you to stick to their bubble baths and shower gels and avoid anything that involves choosing a colour or shade as you will be disappointed.

- 18/05/01 I found this op inaccurate and giving a totally wrong impression, hence the rating. One of the beauties of Avon is that you NEVER have to be left with a product you don't like - Avon will ALWAYS refund you - even if it's because the colour looked different in the brochure or you don't think the product did what it should have or whatever!
Avon's range is huge, and it seems such a shame to misjudge on this experience, especially as you didn't need to have been stuck with either product.
I have loads of lipsticks and my absolute favourite one which I have to have several on the go at a time of is Avon. |

- 04/03/01 Reps have to pay for their samples so actually many don't have any. It is all rather hit and miss as samples can be quite an expense that many just wanting to make some extra money don't want to pay. |
