Avon Mosaic Effects Top Coat
Advantages: Cheap to try out
Disadvantages: Gave a strange look to the nail - nothing like a mosaic
The latest trend in nail varnish seems to be a crackle-mosaic effect whereby you paint your nails one colour, apply a crackle top coat and bazinga....your nail varnish has a crackled mosaic pattern on them. Avon have been quick to pick up this trend and released a crackle nail varnish in both black and white and more recently in other colours such as pink, blue, red, purple and turquoise. I have both the black and white versions and each cost me around £3 as an introductory offer. Full price they are £6 and currently on offer 2 for £8 which is a pretty good deal.
I have questioned my application technqiue a few times with this nail polish mainly because I can't understand why reviews on here are so positive nor why the crackle finish is so popular when I seem to loathe the final look. I have tried a couple of different base colours in case that is making me biased towards disliking the crackle top coat but nothing seems to make a difference. I paint the base colour on and let it dry thoroughly so that the top coat does not 'drag' the base colour. I then apply a very thin layer of the top coat crackle which is easier said than done thanks to the chunk brush and the thick consistency of the top coat. You have to be pretty quick at applying this coat as the brush does tend to drag over the nail and the polish begins to go tacky very quickly. The top coat crackle then begins to separated and give the 'mosaic' effect on top of your nail colour. However for me, the white in particular looks like a child has been let loose with a bottle of Tipp-Ex on my nails. They look messy, chipped and I actually felt really self conscious of my hands when I went out and swiftly ended up removing the polish as it didn't seem to give a nice even crackle it just looked like lots of weird white lines on my nails. It definitely didn't look like it did in the Avon brochure which is why as I've said I questioned my application technique and tried to follow some tips online (i.e. thin top coat, let the base colour dry thoroughly etc.). Unfortunately none of it makes any difference. The black is slightly more successful because it doesn't have the Tipp-Ex look to it but ultimately it is more stripey (random stripes - like a tiger!) than crackle/mosaicy.
I really wanted to love this product but unfortunately I feel like I've wasted £6 on two bottles of nail polish that will probably end up in Nail Varnish Heaven (aka the bin) in the next year or so. It has definitely put me off trying a crackle polish from another brand as I'd be worried that I'd get the same poor and inconsistent results. Unfortunately for me, this is a one star review. I wouldn't buy this again and cannot recommend the product to you.
