Avon SpectraColour Lipstick
Advantages: Lots of choice of colour shade
Disadvantages: What happens when one of the mixer colours runs out?
I have been searching for "my" lipstick for quite some time. To cut a long story short, this isn't it but it is filling a useful gap in the meantime.
I was intrigued by the idea of being able to alter the colours, and to be honest, I can be a sucker for a gimmick from time to time. I chose "The Roses" as my colour combo.
Basically how it works is that inside the lipstick there are two tubes inside filled with two colours of what strictly speaking is lipgloss rather than lipstick. One is pale and the other is dark. You twist a dial at the bottom to choose which combination of the two colours you would like. It goes from 1 to 7 and has a colour strip so you can sort of see what colour it will be when it comes out. You then push a button on the bottom and the lipstick comes out of little holes at the top (there is a lid that covers it when not in use). It has a lock feature if you twist it to past number 1 so that it doesn't matter if the button gets pushed in your bag. The applicator is unusual but I have not found it a problem and you could easily use a lip brush with it if you didn't get on with it.
I found that most of the colours suited me and I have used colours 1 to 5. I have very pale skin and I just put on colour 7 to confirm what I originally thought - It is too dark for me but would probably suit another skin tone. I tend to wear the paler colours in the day and darker ones at night. It feels quite moisturising too.
What is good is that you get a choice. I have never ever bought any other lipstick by mail order because it seems crazy to spend money on something so subjective until your have tried it out. But with this, because you get 7 different shades, as long as you don't hate the tone you chose, you are bound to like one of them. I think it could be fun for teenagers sharing make up as it would give them more options to play around with.
The one thing I do wonder about is when you get to the end of the lipstick. One colour is bound to run out before the other and then you would have to decide whether to throw it away or use just a light or dark colour on it's own. Which seems like a waste. I will add to this review when this happens. What is good is that because it pushes the lipstick out rather than you dipping a wand in like normal gloss is that has lasted for ages and ages. And it hasn't dried out like some of my lip glosses have.
Summary: A bit gimmicky but it gives you choice. You probably won't want to wear all 7 colours.
