I temped for a Bare Minerals counter at work for one day and learnt so much about their products. They have revamped their branding to look a bit like the "Benefit" counter. Also they no longer have "i.d" on any of their products.
This product review is for the "True" colour pot that they advertise as an all over the face colour, when personally I use it as a subtle blusher which looks pretty and gives a nice glow.
The packaging is a simple small plastic container with a matt black cover which you twist off. Inside there is a "twist, lock, go" system where you twist the container and lock into place which opens the holes inside which releases the powder.
This is very handy if you are a total klutz like me who has the tendancy to drop things and the expensive powder goes POOF all over your carpet and you want to cry.
To get an even and perfect coverage- Bare Minerals have a little demonstration video usually on their counters which tell you to "swirl, tap and buff" their products.
This means that using a blusher or kabuki brush you swirl the powder in the lid of your product, you then tap off the excess off the brush and then buff it onto the desired area- and it works- a lovely even coverage that a make up artist would be proud of.
This powder is much more pinky than in the photo above and in it has tiny micro bits of glitter which are pinky, silvery and gold, giving your cheeks a shine.
This make up is also said to be so natural and good for your face that you can even sleep in it, and I can believe them- none of my pillows have been covered in powder and my boyfriend has never complained about it either.
Due to being such a high quality product though- you do have to pay a premium- these pots are £20 each, and they do not really do sales and discounts at these counters. I got this as a gift from someone and treasure it dearly as I do use it daily to bring back the colour in my cheeks and I have had a pot of this for over a year and have not used all of it yet. You would be surprised how little you need to get a nice look.
I was lucky enough to be treated to a Bare Minerals starter kit as a present, and it was such a lovely gift. I loved the blusher, the mineral veil, and the foundation. The only slight downside was that the blusher was very red, which suits some occasions, but wasn't ideal for me, for every day. I needed something a little more subtle and pinky. I looked on the internet and found this lighter colour, 'soft focus'. I ended up buying a tub off ebay, brand new and sealed, for around £10.
The tub is small round and shallow. The bottom is made of very hard clear plastic, you'd be pushed to tell the difference between it and glass. The top is a screw on and off lid, matt black with minimal writing on it. Basic and classy. The top is easy to screw on and off and doesn't lose grip over time. Inside is a mesh type sieve, so that only some of the powder can get to the top level at any given time, this is good so that if you dropped it, or if there was a sudden gust of wind, you wouldn't quite lose all your blusher. Damage limitation you see!
The blusher itself is nice and easy to apply, once you get the hang of how much to put on. In my experience you only need a tiny tiny dab, but you do need lots and lots of brushes to distribute it evenly. With this sort of colour it's so subtle that it won't look disasterous, but it is a waste of expensive valuable product.
The colour is quite a matt colour, it doesn't have a huge shimmer or sparkle to it like other blushers sometimes do. It is a light irridescent pink, a very soft and flattering colour and also very feminine. It is not very striking, so I keep the red one I have for evenings and big occassions, and use this one for day to day and summery days.
About Bare Escentuals
Bare Escentuals BareMinerals is brought to you by a company called Cosmeceuticals, who also own the likes of Skin Doctors, MD Formulations, Vitage and many other brands but those being the most well known and popular.
Bare Escentuals first of all introuduced their BareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation in 1976, since then Bare Escentuals has created creamy, feather-light color for all over your face, cheeks and eyes. They have a complete line of loose, powder-like products which are 100% pure BareMinerals.
All BareMinerals products are made from 100% pure minerals and only use only the finest ingredients in their products. BareMinerals make up mostly comes in powder form and these are made with crushed minerals from the earth, 100% pure bareMinerals is free of preservatives, talc, oil, fragrance and other potential skin irritants; is free of fillers and binders; is weightless; provides adjustable coverage - from light to full and will improve the condition of the skin over time. BareMinerals products are suitable for all ages and skin types and conditions and BareMinerals can be particularly beneficial to those who suffer with skin sensitivities, allergies, scars, blemishes, rosacea, wrinkles and pigmentation problems such as vitaligo and chloasma - a condition suffered by many pregnant ladies. BareMinerals acts as a physical, safe, non chemical block against the sun's harmful rays and many of their face products contain SPF15, which is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. BareMinerals is actually good for your skin as they contain calming and soothing ingredients making them perfect to use when your skin is really sensitive. BareMinerals slogan is "so pure, you can sleep in it" and this really is true.
Although BareMinerals make up has been around since 1976 it is only in the last few years it has become more well known, and it still isn't as widely known about as it should be. It is America's number 1 selling foundation and also the number 1 mineral make up brand in the world, proving that it must be good. It is slowly coming into more salons and getting more of the deserved publicity it should in the UK. Quite a few salons, I have found mainly in the Midlands stock BareMinerals, and the salon I work in does also, and has done for several years - the customers love it! Since using Bare Escentuals make up on my face, I would never use anything else and I know alot of customers feel the same. I think it is the best make up out there by far.
Bare Minerals True is an all over face colour. It gives you a hint of natural colour and you can control how much you apply. It's a complexion booster and gives you a healthy, natural looking glow to your skin that lasts all day whilst still maintaining a lovely natural look. It is a Muti tasking product, you can use it as a highlighter, blush, cheek contour, eyeshadow or even a lip colour. True is in between a bronzer and a blush, with a hint of each in it, making it the perfect face colour. It gives you a natural rosey tint with a touch of sunkissed glow.
True comes in the form of a powder but it's not actually a powder. It feels like a cream and buffs onto your face like silk, providing your skin with a natural glow that lasts all day.
Use & Effects
It is recommended that you use Bare Escentuals Full Coverage Kabuki Brush or Bare Escentuals Taper Blush Brush when applying True to your skin. I personally use the Full Coverage Kabuki Brush. I would actually agree with this, as I do find it makes a real difference and maximises the effect on your skin. I recently lost my Kabuki Brush and had to buy a similar looking one in Superdrug and I can really notice the difference, it doesn't feel as soft on my skin and apply the product evenly and smoothly and is quite harsh on my skin. I will definately be purchasing another Kabuki Brush. After you have applied your foundation, and I would really recommend using BareMinerals SPF Foundation, it is the same texture and consistency as True and the two products work fantastically together, but if you don't want to use this, you can still use it ontop of other foundations too but you must note you won't recieve the full benefits of the mineral contents as your other foundation will contain nasty ingredients.
To apply True, first of all swirl the brush inside the lid, absorbing a small amount of BareMinerals onto your brush, tap to remove the excess and then buff the powder onto your skin or onto the apple of your cheeks. You can apply as much as you like, but it is best to apply a small amount and add to it if you feel necessary. In the day I would just apply True to the apple of my cheeks to give my face some colour and in the evening I tend to apply as an all over face colour as it provides a fuller, deeper coverage ontop of my foundation. You can use it ontop of foundation or even alone to give your complexion a boost and light coverage. You can also use True on your lip to give a bit of natural colour. Before applying lipstick and lip liner, dab the blush with your finger over freshly moisturised lips. There is also a video on Bare Escentuals website showing you how to use the product, the demo is of the foundation, but you apply True the same, I thought it might be quite useful for some people to see it actually been done, as I know it helped me - http://www.bareminerals.co.uk/?page=howto.
True is in between BareMinerals bronzer Warmth and BareMinerals blush Glee. All three of these are all over face colours but all have different tones and are suited to different skin types. True is perfect if you like to have a rosy tint but also with a sunkissed glow. It is a light bronzer with hints of coral in to give it that rosy tint. It has a delicate shimmering glow that looks fresh and natural. True looks different on every person, as it matches in with your skin tone, so will look slightly different than on someone else, this is great as it will make sure it blends in perfectly to your skintone. I have a rosy tint in my cheeks naturally, so I don't tend to use blush as this highlights it and tend to stick to bronzers to give me some colour but True is one product I can use without it highlighting my rosy cheeks anymore, it's fantastic.
True really makes a difference to the colour of your skin, you only need a small amout and it perfectly highlights your good features on your face, giving you a natural glow. It doesn't cling to your skin and look cakey, instead it looks even, smooth and natural. You don't end up with a line between your face and neck like you do with a lot of make ups, providing more reason for True to look so natural on your skin. It also does not transfer onto clothes, so you don't have to worry about transferring it onto your boyfriends clothes! When you use True with BareMinerals SPF Foundation, the foundation gives you a smooth, even and perfect canvas, so it looks like you are applying True to your own perfect skin to give you some natural looking colour, it's fantastic. As True is so weightless, you cannot feel that you are wearing make up and it doesn't tighten your skin, especially as it all looks so natural and it just looks like you have perfect skin. I have recieved so many compliments about my make up and how perfect it always looks - it's all thanks to BareMinerals.
All BareMinerals products are suitable for all skin types - oily, dry, combination and sensitive as it has factors to suit all those skin types. As it is in a powder form it is great for oily skin, as it absorbs the excess oil without it showing, sticking and looking cakey on your skin. If your skin gets oily whilst on, you can just buff over and it absorbs the oil. True is a light weight feathery powder, which doesn't cling to your skin and doesn't highlight any dry patches, it glides over these areas and makes your skin look even and fresh. As it contains all natural mineral ingredients only it is suitable for sensitive skin, it doesn't contain any preservatives, talc, oil, fragrance and other potential skin irritants and is free of fillers and binders, which makes the perfect foundation for sensitive skin. I suffer from ecezma on my face and this is the only make up I can wear on it without it sticking to it and causing irritation and swelling. It also is fantastic for covering up any marks on your skin and patches of ecezma and such things, it doesn't cling to it and perfectly masks any marks, covering them up without you being able to see the make up on it.
BareMinerals cannot be compared to other mineral make ups that have recently come onto the market such as loreal, other products do not contain pure minerals, they still contain nasty ingredients so it's not good for your skin and they don't even look good on your skin either.
I find that a pot of True will last about a year with daily use, as you only need a small amount. It is easy to remove, you can use cleanser, make up remover or facial wipes. As it is pure minerals, True is actually okay to sleep in - it won't bring you out in spots as it allows your skin to breathe whilst on and does not clog your pores. Obviously it is best to sleep with no make up on whatsover, but if you forget or don't have anything to remove it with then it doesn't matter.
Price & Availability
True's RRP is £24.00 but it is available on www.lookfantastic.com for £21.50. Most places you go will charge RRP for all BareMinerals products however, and on lookfantastic you will pay postage taking it up to RRP. It can also be purchased from any salon stocking BareMinerals products, from www.bareminerals.co.uk or from other websites. The Bare Escentuals Full Coverage Kabuki Brush I recommended for use with True costs £24 but it lasts forever, you don't have to replace it, unless you loose it like I did! It can be purchased from any of the places True can be purchased from.
BareMinerals is the best make up I have come across and I will never use any other products on my face. I would recommend this to anyone who has problems with their current make up and want to care for their skin. True gives a beautiful natural looking glow to your face and instantly makes it look fresh. It is smooth, even and blends perfectly into your skin.
