Bare Escentuals i.d. BareMinerals Foundation
Advantages: lightweight, shades on offer, packaging, coverage, longevity, minerals, gentle
Disadvantages: not a heavy coverage for scars/blemishes, expensive
bareMinerals is a range of make up and skin care products from Bare Escentuals. The Bare Minerals products are enriched with natural minerals to enhance your skin from the outside.
Today I will be discussing my use of the 'Original SPF15 Foundation'.
This foundation is in powder form and is one of bareMinerals best selling products. It has won a number of awards. bareMinerals state that this foundation should offer you a flawless coverage without caking. It is designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and is gentle enough to wear whilst sleeping. This foundation is said to have a silky texture which feels like a cream when applied to your skin. It also contains an SPF 15 sunscreen. It is formulated with crushed minerals.
Original Foundation is available in 20 different shades and there is a shade suitable for all skin tones. The lightest shade is Fair for those who have light, porcelain skin tones. There is a good selection of medium shades and tan shades. Darker shades are also available so you are likely to be able to find something to match your skin tone. This foundation is free from preservatives, talc and other irritants and is suitable for all skin types.
This foundation is presented in a little round, plastic sifter pot. The packaging is simple yet stylish and very practical. The pot has a special 'click lock' system inside which allows to cover over the sifter holes when not in use. This helps keep the pot free from excess mess and also keeps the powder fresher. I think all make up brands should take note of this as i have lost count of the times where I have opened a pot of powder to have it spill everywhere!
~Price and Availability~
bareMinerals Original Foundation is available from any Bare Escentuals department (in larger department stores) and here you will be able to match a shade to your skin tone. You can also order online and can pick up an 8g pot from stockists including John Lewis and www.bareminerals.co.uk for £25.00. If you have a look around the discounted beauty websites, you could pick it up for a better price. www.escentual.com have this foundation priced from £16.67.
I am a fan of the bareMinerals range as the products suit my skin type well. I bought my pot of Original Foundation just after Christmas as I needed a new powder. I got it at a discounted price due to a promotion but would happily pay the full £25.00 rrp as I believe it is very much worth it. You get a lot for your money too - 8g doesn't seem like much but you need so little per use that it lasts for ages.
I have a light skin tone so the best matched shade for me was 'fairly light'. I love to wear make up but you will never see me wearing heavy foundation and the likes. I like a simple, natural look. Liquid foundation rarely agrees with my skin for some reason so I favour a light powder to give my skin a nice, natural glow. This foundation suits my needs perfectly.
The powder itself doesn't look overly fine inside the pot but once swept up on to my make up brush (I use my own thick brush from a professional set), it breaks down into a fine, light powder. The sifter holes are just the right size and release a small amount of powder each time with very little mess. I tend to tip what I need into the plastic lid and swirl it around on to my brush from here. This works best for me personally but others may have a different method.
Application of this foundation is very simple. I always fully cleanse, tone and moisturise my skin before applying any make up as my skin is naturally dry. This foundation feels beautifully soft if I touch it with my fingertip and the powder glides across my skin effortlessly without any fall out of powder. bareMinerals are spot on when they mention that it feels like a cream when applied. I'm not sure how they managed this but my skin feels like it is being treated to a moist, moisturising powder as I apply this. It is very lightweight, gentle and smooth against my skin which I appreciate. It has a faint cosmetic powder smell - nothing heavy.
I apply this all over my face (except my eyes and mouth of course) and find that it offers excellent coverage. Fairly light definitely suits my skin tone. It is described as being 'for porcelain to light skin with neutral undertones' and I would say that this is a fair description. This foundation sits beautifully on my skin and I can't 'feel' it at all as my skin is left to breath as normal. The powder doesn't settle into the many lines I have and doesn't dry out my skin further. I find it to be the least drying powder I have used over the past few years and it does feel moist and hydrating to my skin somewhat. My skin is left silky smooth.
I like the way my skin looks after applying this foundation. There is no tell-tale orange tide lines (Mum - take note!) and the finish is extremely natural in my opinion. My complexion is left radiant and I am generally left looking fresh faced. The Fairly Light shade gives my skin a boost of natural looking colour but in no way looks fake or heavy. I do love the way my skin looks bright and appreciate that this foundation does an excellent job of evening out my complexion and concealing any small blemishes and other skin problems without feeling heavy on my skin. My skin appears healthy. I can apply my blusher underneath or over the top without any hassle and I am more confident to wear during warmer days thanks to the SPF content.
The longevity of the Fairly Light shade is really good. The actual appearance of this foundation is evident, albeit lightly, on my skin through most of the day. If it is a really hot day, I find that the foundation needs a light top up to keep my complexion glowing but it never goes patchy like a liquid foundation and remains in place well. Any remaining foundation can be removed with a cleansing wipe without any hassle but if I've had a busy day and 'forget' about removing it then it is safe to sleep with it on due to the mineral content and my skin hasn't suffered any ill effects from doing so.
I would say that this foundation is best suited for a natural, everyday look and coverage as opposed to for a night out. It is light and does give my skin a near-on flawless appearance for daytime but some may favour something a little heavier for going out clubbing. There is a matte version of this foundation available and whilst the Original gives my skin a glow, I find it to be a healthy glow rather than a shiny glow so don't feel the need to opt for the matte version - others may feel differently so it is trial and error to get the best product for your skin.
Whilst expensive, I feel that this foundation is worth the high cost. My skin is left looking and feeling great. The finish offered by this foundation is smooth and natural. My skin has never reacted to the ingredients and in general the powder feels very gentle and soothing against my dry, sensitive skin. It is much kinder to my skin than some other premium brands and the quality is definitely high.
I cannot speak for all skin types or all shades but I am happy with my selection and use this foundation a few times per week as I love the way my skin looks whilst wearing it. I wouldn't say that it would provide sufficient coverage to hide most obvious scars or skin issues. My pot is lasting incredibly well with regular use and I find this to be worth the high cost. Highly recommended!
Thanks for reading ;)
Summary: fairly light is good!
