This is a review of Bare Escentuals i.d bareVitamins skin rev-er upper. You may know the brand as they are well known for their amazing mineral foundation product which is regularly demonstrated on the shopping channel QVC.
What is it?
This product is possibly lesser-known and something I have been using for a while now. It is not called a primer yet it fulfils the same functions as a primer! The instructions advise you to use it before your moisturiser and then add primer and then add foundation... the whole point of me using mineral make up is the speed I can apply it so I am afraid some of the steps get cut out on my morning routine.
Here's the blurb: Formulated with botanicals, glycolic and salicylic acids, this is a daily multi-vitamin facial prep designed to rejuvenate and smooth out the surface of your skin prior to applying bareMinerals SPF15 foundation, so that pores seem practically invisible. It also helps to refine the fine lines that show up unannounced. Lightweight and fragrance-free this is perfect for all skin types.
What's it like
Bare Escentuals i.d. bareVitamins Skin Rev-er Upper is a lightweight, silky, skin perfecting primer for a flawless complexion. Yet they also sell a primer for face and a primer for eyes so it is a bit of a duplicate product!
I have to admit I don't use this every time but I will use it if I have the time to spend a little more effort and I probably do end up with a better end result for taking the extra time but whether it is down to this product I can't really say. It is quite runny and does not smell of anything in particular to me. When I have used it, it does make my skin feel different and when it dries, it feels a bit like a thin masque on my face. Or should that be a mask?!
The product comes in a white plastic bottle with a black pump action lid. The pump delivers a small amount of the product helping it to last a loooong time! I don't think the packaging is really very attractive and it certainly doesn't shout 'premium product' to me which it is as the price mentioned below
Price / size
A 68 ml bottle costs £14.99 plus postage on the website beautybay.com. It really does last a long time but whether it's an essential piece of kit is discussed below.
Can't live without ...
Well actually I think I could live without this skin revver upper type product from Bare Escentuals. It's certainly not the first thing I reach for in my kit when I know I have five mins max to leave the house. That's probably why it has lasted me so long.
There are a lot of ingredients listed on the back of the bottle* which I won't bore you with now but they are at the bottom of this review if you want to check them out. The number of ingredients kind of puts me off but it either means two things: 1. It's just amazing the mixology of ingredients that make it a wonder product or 2. It's full of chemicals!
My thoughts about repurchase
This is not something I would consider paying £15 for and I think I originally got it in a kit with other items as it's not something I remember purchasing individually. I am sure there are people who would say they cannot live without this product and I certainly could use some help covering pores on my nose at times. The blurb on the back of the bottle makes it sound fabulous, promising a re-energised complexion and a smooth surface with which to work your magic. I can feel this product on my skin and that's not what I want from bare minerals. I want to wear their makeup and feel and look natural with it! I also feel like my skin is burning slightly a while after this product is applied and dried but that may just be sensitive skin reacting to it rather than it being a bad product.
If anyone from BE is watching or listening, I would also like to ask them what they are doing with branding. They can't seem to make up their minds whether they are Bare Escentuals, Bare Minerals and then chuck in the range of i.d products and you have one confused customer sitting right here.
Whether this is a primer or not, the jury's out. It doesn't say it on the packaging but it has been used in the product's description on other websites. To me a primer is clear though and this is white, and more creamy than I expect. A primer is usually more like a serum to me but maybe I am thinking of another product in particular. I have always used this product in conjunction with the bare escentuals range and don't mix and match it with say a liquid foundation. Sometimes you do have to reassess your make up armoury and decide what's got to go and I think in my case it is this product. I think because it is quite expensive I expect that it will be really good. Gosh I had a lot more to say about this product than I originally thought!
