I really like Barry M, though I've never really strayed far outside of their lipsticks and Dazzle Dusts. After being intimidated by droves of mascaras with huge fancy brushes, I was compelled to pick up this sweet and simple option. It's described as adding length and volume, as well as lasting up to six hours, and costs around £6.19 - not super cheap, but cheaper than a lot of the competition!
PACKAGING: The product is one of Barry M's "Bold Black" waterproof variety, which isn't really a "range" since it only consists of this mascara and an eyeliner of the same design. It comes in a black 8ml tube with squared edges, easy to spot against Barry M's usual rainbow colours. It's a nice practical design that keeps the tube from rolling about, as well as being smart.
APPLICATION: I haven't yet found a mascara with a big brush that suits me, so I was attracted to this mascara's simple, thin wand. I'm not a fan of brushes like messy caterpillars, but this one's just straight with short, firm plastic bristles, more like little spikes than a brush. It's a structured, comb-like design that stays clean and never ever gets clumpy or pulls out too much liquid. Despite the straight brush, it's very easy to apply, and a couple of passes over each eye is all I usually need. The fine bristles are ideal for separating lashes, even the little ones, and deliver a thorough coat without going overboard. The mascara can be quite wet at first, but dries in a couple of minutes - just be careful not to get it in your eyes, since it does smart a bit.
QUALITY: I'd say this is a perfect everyday mascara. It's perhaps not the best option if you want really dramatic lashes, but it's very hard-wearing and capable of adding good length and volume. Once it's on, it lasts all day without budging (even on oily, weepy eyes like mine), only coming off when I remove it in the evening. It really does deliver in the longevity department, unless you really splash or rub your eyes.
At the moment, this is my favourite mascara for general use. It's quick and easy to apply, and the brush is great for preventing clumpiness and mess. It's very understated and simple, but one of my favourites for that reason - for better or worse, I'm really put off by massively-hyped mascaras. For a middle-range mascara that boldens lashes and stays put, this is my go-to product.
