~WHY DID I BUY IT?~
Looking for something different and considering having my nails painted professionally, hearing that I would have to pay around the £10 just to have them painted once I thought was a ridiculous amount. So after seeing this for £4 I thought I may aswell give it a try and see if it does what it says it will!
~WHAT IS IT? & HOW DOES IT WORK?~
The idea of the Barry M Instant Nail Effects is that you apply a coat over the top of another colour and leave to dry into a crackled effect over the top. For this to work you need to make sure that the colour you put on first had completely dried, otherwise it might not give the wanted effect and you'd have to wipe it off and restart the whole nail!
~APPLYING THE NAIL PAINT~
The brush is quite thin so for my size nails i would need to do two or three strokes of the paint to coat the whole nail, this is pretty difficult because sometimes if you overlap the strokes the effects won't appear as well. It's quite tricky to get the hang of to start with because if I go wrong (I'm not great with painting my nails!) I'd just leave it to dry and put another coat on, but with this you would need to wipe the whole lot off and repaint it. The texture is quite lumpy, this might be how it's meant to be and helps it give the effect but I'm not sure. The first time I used it I wanted to make sure that the black would stand out from the colour I used below it so I picked out my brightest pink and used two coats of that before leaving it to dry fully and then applying one coat of the black. It dries almost instantly - well about a minute, but that's pretty fast?!
After the black had dried on the top, it created a lovely crackled effect. It also works well with darker colours which I have tried. The nail paint chips quite easily, but that could be because of the varnish I use underneath it or me just being clumsy! It's quite a matte finish, so if you prefer shiny nails I would suggest applying a clear top coat, which also helps with keeping the nail varnish on and helping it to be longer lasting. Your nail might feel more bumpy because of the lumpy texture of the product, so if you prefer a smooth finish this probably isn't for you.
~WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?~
The Barry M Instant Nail Effects comes in a classic clear glass nail varnish pot so you can see the colour through it with a black lid. The front saying Nail Painy by Barry M on.
~PRICE & AVAILABILITY~
I bought the nail polish in 'Black Magic' for £4 from my local Boots. But I think there are various other places you can find it: the Barry M website, Superdrug and other places online. The other three colours available are: Pink Fizz, Blue Print and White Frost.
For any of you that are interested, these are the ingredients:
