Barry M is arguably the most well known for its lipstick and eyeshadow, in which vibrant colours and a longlasting brightness have wowed both budgeted make up girls and professional artists alike. But this mascara proves that as a makeup brand on the whole, Barry M serves well- long lasting and truly lengthening, this product is not yet another false promotion created to add a couple of quid to the price tag. What is great about this mascara is the way it is so practical- it can easily be used with a couple of coats for a night out, but a thin layer will be perfect for a more subtle daytime look. Matched up with a pretty Barry M eyeshadow and those lashes will really stand out in this mascara. Overall, this is a worthwhile product and lasts long compared to more expensive and well known brands of mascara. This mascara is a good buy.
Recently I wanted to put some colour on my lashes and as I have brown eyes and hair I thought that a green Mascara might be the best shade for me as I have often heard that green compliments brown.
So while shopping in Superdrug I picked up a Barry M Lengthening Mascara in Emerald Green. I think I paid £3.49 for 8ml of Mascara and although 8ml doesn't sound like much that is about the average amount that you get in a mascara tube.
The Barry M Cosmetic company began in 1982 when Barry M realised that there was not much colourful make-up around, which is weird as I thought that bright colourful make-up was the only thing you could buy in the 80s! According to the Barry M website, Barry M is known to produce the most colourful makeup and they claim that they are the UK's number one fashion cosmetic company which seems quite surprising to me, as before I started reading reviews on Dooyoo I had never heard of Barry M!
The Mascara comes in a very slim tube which is 13cm long including the lid. The lid is black and the tube is a dull green colour which I would say doesn't really fit the name Emerald Green and having looked at a few shades of green on the internet I would say it is closer to a shade known as fern green.
The tube is very plain and to me looks more like a marker pen. It says Emerald Green, Lengthening Mascara in bold writing and beneath that it says Barry M in curvy italic writing. We are told on the tube that this Mascara will give intense colour coverage whilst lengthening the lashes and apart from the address of Barry M cosmetics, that is the only info we are given on the tube. Overall I am not impressed with the packaging of this Mascara as it looks a little cheap and boring.
When you open the Mascara, you will find that the wand and brush are of an average size and that the brush is densely bristled. The Mascara is exactly the same colour as the packaging, so although Barry M did a good job of representing the colour of the Mascara I am a little disappointed as the colour doesn't look bright or exciting in any way.
I can also see that the brush and bristles are not well covered in the Mascara, which means that I am wondering whether the Mascara will give the intense colouring that the tube promises.
For those who like to know the smell of things I would say this Mascara doesn't smell nice, it's like poster paint and soil mixed together, but that is not a particularly big problem!
When I first run the Mascara brush through my lashes I find that very little of the Mascara is transferred. The results are very uneven and it is almost like the Mascara does not want to cling to my eyelashes. Usually the tip of any Mascara brush is loaded with Mascara and this can be quite useful if you want to make your outer corner eyelashes look dramatic as you can almost paint them individually, with this Mascara even when you paint quite a large glob of Mascara on to your eyelashes the result is still patchy.
As you might imagine given the fact the Mascara doesn't coat the lashes effectively the lengthening aspect of this Mascara is almost none existent. It didn't smudge or flake but I don't find that particularly impressive given the fact that I could hardly get any of the Mascara on my lashes in the first place!
So overall I would say that I am disappointed with this Mascara and even though it was cheap I would still say it was a complete waste of money. Firstly I would say the colour is incredibly dull, secondly I would say that given the uneven coverage and the colour of the Mascara, your eyelashes actually look like they have a case of creeping mould! And thirdly I would say that the lengthening properties of this Mascara were zero, I have actually began to wonder if I maybe got a Mascara from a bad batch because I am surprised to find that on Dooyoo this Mascara has 4 stars!
Shade: Bright Turquoise
:: Introduction ::
I've recently discovered Barry M cosmetics and their impressive range of colourful cosmetics so it was a natural choice when browsing for a mascara with a shade to go with my Urban Decay bright turquoise eyeliner.
:: Packaging ::
The mascara comes in a coloured plastic tube that matches the colour of the shade you bought. The screw-on lid is black and made of plastic.
:: Appearance & Application ::
::: Product claims :::
"This fragrance-free mascara will not only add visual length and rich colour to your eyelashes, but it's long lasting formula stands the test of time!"
The applicator is a relatively short and tight brush that you glide over your lashes in a wiggling motion to create length and volume. The colour dries in seconds, there's no need to wait which is another bonus.
::: Results :::
- Coverage 4 / 5
A bright coloured mascara will never completely cover the lashes, however, on second application I managed to get an even medium coverage. The result was a two-colour, turquoise and brown effect to complete the full look and also added an extra boost to the turqoise eyeliner.
- Lengthening effect 2 / 5
I didn't particularly notice any lenthening effect, though my lashes certainly appeared thickened and volumised. I reckon the brighter the colour the more apparent the optical enlargement will be.
- Long-lasting 4 / 5
The mascara itself will probably not last as long considering the double application and that because any colour other than black / dark brown will not give 100% coverage to the lashes so you'll tend to use more. As for the formula, it has impressed me with it's long-lasting, bright colour that stays.
:: Conclusion ::
Overall, the mascara lasted longer than the eyeliner and Barry M Dazzle Dust I applied at the same time up to an impressive 7 - 8 hours. It did not smudge at all and while it was slightly harder to remove than the rest of my makeup, it certainly is long-lasting. To sum up, it's a lengthening mascara that doesn't actually lengthen the lashes but gives a fairly thick coverage and a nice, long-lasting colour.

I was bored of using just plain black mascara.
so being only 17 (and able to get away with wearing bright colours)i decided to be adventurous and go for pink!!
so i walked into my local superdrug store and ent to the make up aisle.
and the brightness of the BarryM stand drew my attention. so i looked at the make up, and there it was...
the bright pink tube with black lid!!
i was shocked at the cheapness when i saw the price!!
i tried it as soon as i got home, but as i was already wearing black mascara and i couldnt be bothered to take it off, so i just put the pink stuff over it. it didnt go on very well, it was barely noticable.
but i tried it again the next morning with no black mascara underneath, and omg the brightness!!
it really makes my green eyes stand out, and i really make a statement when i wear it with purple eyeliner around my eyes!! i love it
it goes on REALY smoothly and is very noticable!!
i would DEFINATELY reccomend this to ANYONE!!
Since I was going all out for a party, I decided to do something a bit different and go for a coloured mascara. Having done my research, it seemed that Barry M lengthening mascara was the best budget buy (I didn't think I'd be wearing electric purple mascara every day after all!): I bought Electric purple, but it is also available in Bright Turquoise, Sky Blue, Emerald Green and Shocking Pink! It cost me £4.95 from Boots.
In general, I found the mascara easy to apply with the almost conical brush - I haven't even poked myself in the eye with it - a first for me! With collection 2000 mascara, it smudges all over my eyelid but this didn't happen, which was great. The mascara went on evenly - it didn't catch, smudge or clump - and it stayed on all evening without flaking on my face or giving me purple panda eyes, even though I got something in my eye and ended up rubbing it!
Those were the good points: on the down side, it has a rather strange unpleasant chemical smell, and it goes on as more of a purple tint, which you actually have to look for to notice, rather than a striking colour, which is what I thought it would be. This may be because my eyelashes are black though. The texture is also slightly gloopy. The mascara claims to give intense colour coverage while lengthening the lashes - in my opinion, the colour is not intense and the mascara does not make my lashes look any longer - it just looks like I'm wearing normal mascara with a purple-ish tint - if you deliberately look for it.
Thankfully, the mascara was quite easy to remove with eye makeup remover - it didn't end up all over my face like some others!
The mascara comes in a long tube (about 13cm long) which is encased in plastic wrap when you first buy it - it has perforated lines in it but I found it quite fiddly to remove. The tube contains 8ml.
The lid is black and the writing on the tube is black. The background of the tube is the same colour as the mascara. I wasn't too impressed with this - I thought that the size should be smaller (and the price therefore cheaper) as it's for occasional use and mascara should be thrown away every 3 to 6 months anyway. I also think that it looks a bit cheap and plasticky, and is a little long to fit in some makeup bags.
Although some of what I've said sounds negative, I quite like this mascara, and might try out another colour as it's something a bit different where the effect is subtle - I sometimes use this mascara during the day now to match with my clothes! I also wore it to a party with glittery eyeliner and the effect was really good - I got loads of compliments!
I have finally found the perfect black mascara. It's taken me years to achieve this and loads have hit the bin over the years. I now find I have more pennies due to not having to buy one a week so I've moved on!
I have a done a few cosmetic reviews and if you've read any of them you'll know by now I have my favourite brands and at 33 I like classic, nice packaged products and I'm willing to spend my money in this area to have the best and of course shop online and hunt for the bargains! However I do like fun and funky colours and will experiment a little by keeping my make up look quite natural and classy but then I will use a funky unusual eye liner or something to revamp a look. I'm not dead yet after all but I think when you hit your 30's and you cover yourself in the latest of neon colours instead of looking bang on trend we can look like we are stuck in the 80's!
I read a lot of reviews on here and particularly of interest to me are Urban Decay and Benefit products but the first set of reviews that grabbed my attention when I got here were Barry M reviews by people like Misssixy. I loved the sound of this newish trendy range and off I went and I was so impressed by the prices that I realised I could try a brand I'd never heard of without worrying about my bank balance and if the products were as great as the reviews suggested then it was worth stocking up and reinventing myself considering I'd spend heaps already on Urban Decay.
So off I trotted to Superdrug and Boot's where the range is stocked. I was immediately a little put out by the funky, colourful stand and I thought who am iI trying to kid here? lol However I got stuck in and purchased a few items to wear singly to use as I stated earlier. So I fancied some blue mascara. I was worried as I wore it all the time in the 90's but I saw another woman my age pick it up and buy it so I thought what the hell it's only £4.95!
5.5ml long plastic 'tube' which is opaque and the colour of the mascara you have chosen with a black lid that twists on and off and the brush is attached to it. The wand itself is a long black one with about an inch long black brush which is conventional in style. On the 'tube' there is black writing and on mine I'm told my colour which in my case is sky blue and I'm told it's By Barry M and under that I'm told 'gives intense colour coverage whilst lengthening lashes then under that I'm given contact details for Barry M and the size is stated.
Well firstly I must congratulate Barry M on the brush. It's very basic but good quality and easy to use. Some brushes I have tried in the past have been hairy and had bits dropping of and almost poking my eyes out but not this one. It has ridges and as you stroke your eyelashes though with it you can take it to the rim without getting tickled or agitated and your lashes roll off the brush. It's really is easy to use.
However the liquid is too thin. Not drip everywhere thin but just sort of thin with no body to it at all! Now on the upside of this it does coat well (where it sticks to, just not the roots) and is not at all clumpy and this as a black mascara I have to try for daytime use but with the colour I chose my eyelashes were still visible and the colour coated on the ends of my eyelashes but not throughout them. (Just to say at this point black mascara is not available at the moment). I put on three coats in the end, leaving it to try for a few seconds between each application and I did coat most of my eyelashes but still, my natural eyelash colour was still visible and it all looked a bit patchy.
Also instead of glossy eyelashes they looked rather chalk like and powdery and when I ran my fingers across the eyelashes when dry they did feel 'bitty'. Even with the amount of mascara I had applied, still, they didn't get heavy, no flakes and it lasts all day (or night!) with no wearing off or agitation and bits never broke off into the corners of my eyes. It stays put.
I'm a bit disappointed that the colour wasn't thick enough to coat my eye lashes fully, it looked a bit odd and this is not glossy or waterproof. As for lengthening? Nope I disagree with this statement totally.
It made no difference to the length but eyelashes did appear fuller although not loads, you have to look for the difference instead of just noticing it. As It's thin in consistency it's easy to apply and you don't get 'branches' of eyelashes and no unsightly clumps which makes a refreshing change and the removal? Easy as pie just remove with your usual routine, no special requirements needed.
I wouldn't buy a colour in this again I'd only try the black for daytime. I was a bit disappointed by the overall coverage and would take a guess that this would be better used by someone with lighter, (lighter the better) eyelashes than me and just to be clear mine are not that dark either!
I wouldn't recommend it and be safe in the knowledge that people are not wasting their money so I would advise anyone interested to investigate the product fully first!
