Barry M Nail Paint
Advantages: Decent consistency, quick drying
I get my nails done professionally simply because apart from having the most brittle nails possible it is also a great way of catching up with my nail technician friend and have a coffee! Her nail polish of choice is usually O.P.I but as much as I love their nail polishes I do find that I don't have one colour long enough to warrant the expense of one bottle as I tend to change my colour (more on my toes than nails) on a very frequent basis which is why I tend to find cheaper alternatives but to be great bargains they do need to actually last and wear well.
Superdrug isn't a store I shop it regularly simply because opposite is Boots which I much prefer. However, on a quick look in a few months ago I came across their Barry M selection which was quite large and extensive. I always look at the nail varnishes and not only was I impressed with the colour selection but also the price of a very reasonable £2.99 per bottle - this is of course the Barry M Nail Paint selection NOT any of their other varieties that they do. After browsing their shades I ended up purchasing shade "NP273" or Raspberry as its known.
According to the Barry M website these are award winning Nail Paints which would hopefully mean that they are incredibly good and worth their money. They are meant to be quick drying as well as long lasting making them suitable for both natural and acrylic nails which is great as I do use them on my acrylic nails (I don't have French tips they are just left natural with an acrylic overlay). I do find that some nail polishes are awful on acrylic nails so this was a definite plus. From looking at the website these nail polishes come in a wide colour spectrum from neon yellow to glitter green to a matt grey, there really is something for everyone!
The nail polish itself comes in quite a nice square clear glass shaped bottle so you can clearly see what colour the nail varnish is and once in use just how much you have left. It has a black screw on top which has the brush applicator attached to it. The front of the bottle features the Barry M font logo in gold font together with the product name. Round the back of the bottle there is the product information, barcode and shade number. The shade I opted for which is known as "NP273" which is known as raspberry but to me it is a lovely rich deep cherry red with a hue of purple which although quite a bright colour for me it is dark enough for me to wear to work should I want to.
Now I have applied this to be my acrylic nails and to my toes and have had exactly the same result which is definitely a good thing. On opening the bottle you are not met with that awful pungent nail varnish smell which some nail polishes give don't get me wrong there is a scent to it but nowhere near as strong. I have found over the last few years that manufacturers are trying to reduce the smell of nail polishes which is definitely a good thing as they do smell awful!
Now for me the consistency of a nail polish is crucial as having one too thin means numerous applications to get the right colour as well as drying time is lengthened and having something too thick usually results in a bad application due to the length of time it has to dry. Barry M Nail Paint does have a pretty good consistency and I was impressed when I applied it for the first time as I didn't need to apply coat after coat after coat to get the colour which is shown in the bottle. Of course like most nail polishes you should apply on top of a base coat which is what I do as apart from making the nail polish dry properly it will also look after your nails too.
After applying one coat I was amazed to see (and feel) how quick it did dry and it certainly was more than just touch dry which was nice. However, I did think it needed a second coat just to get that lovely rich colour that the bottle promised. A second coat was all it needed to get that colour I wanted but I did make sure that the first coat was completely dry first and then applied the second coat. Again, it didn't take long to dry completely which was great but I do tend to apply nail polish to my toes when I know I'm not going anywhere so they can completely dry as I don't want the polish to smudge and as for my nails I tend to apply about an hour before bed or if I am at my friend's she will spray them with a specific spray to help them dry.
But does it last?! As long as a nail varnish doesn't chip then I am happy and I am very pleased to say that this doesn't chip either on my acrylic nails or toes. But I did notice that after a few days there were signs of wear on my acrylic nails and this is mainly because of me working as well as dealing with horses on a daily basis but that is what I tend to expect and I don't mind having to reapply every 3 to 4 days. As for my toe nails the colour lasted really well and could easily have gone 2 weeks before needing to come off and to be re-applied which is great. The colour doesn't dull down either which is another plus as it manages to keep the richness of the colour.
To remove I found that a simple wipe with a cotton pad and nail varnish remover (acetone free for me!) was all that it needed to come off. If you don't use a base coat you may find that the colour will stain especially near or on your cuticles however by using a base coat the polish easily comes off with no problems at all which is great as there is nothing worse than trying to scrub nail polish. You may find though with a nail polish remover which contains acetone that it will come off even easier.
Overall, I think this is a great nail polish and I will be buying a few more of their shades to add to my collection. I can't really find fault with it at all as it does what it says apart from the wearing down on my acrylic nails but then I expect this due to what I put my hands through! It is easily applied, dries quickly and offers great value for money so no complaints from me and I would definitely recommend to all, especially those who like me like to change their nail polish on a very regular basis as they won't break the bank! 5 Stars from me!
