Advantages: Beautiful effect, range of shades, workable and not overly pricey
Disadvantages: I didn't find it suitable for the lips
Barry M is a make-up brand which I have really come to admire over the last couple of years, Not only does it sell genuinely exciting products in every colour imaginable, but it is also easy on the pocket. My latest purchase, was the shimmering eye and lip crayon, which is available in 7 shades: Gold, Pink, Turquoise/Blue, Marshmellow, Violet, Golden Broze and Green.
I purchased "Marshmellow" for around £4 from Superdrug. All 7 shades are also available on the Barry M website.
The design of the pencil is similar to the Barry M eye crayon I use, which is much chunkier than a standard eye pencil. The crayon itself is the same colour as the pencil, depending on what shade you buy, and contains a clear plastic lid to protect the pencil, and also see what shade you are getting before you buy (although I always try the testers first!).
The crayon is wider than a standard eye pencil. I found that with the width, you can colour in a surface with ease, yet you can still get the precision if you sharpen the pencil first. It is also helpful for application, as sometimes with a thin pencil you can make mistakes because of the awkward angle and how thin the crayon is, but with a slightly bigger width I find it's easy to hold onto.
The colour I chose, Marshmellow is a very soft, pretty 50's esque shade, and suits my pale skin as it adds a hint of pink to my eyes, yet not overly so. The pencil is very workable, as it's not solid in texture as some eye pencils can be, infact it glides beautifully if I have applied foundation first to my eyelids. The overall effect is very subtle, especially as it blends quite easily. I would say the effect it gives makes it look like I have used a highlighter, as it's quite a natural, pretty shade.
The effect is slightly pale metallic, however you can work this in to make it more and more subtle, depending on how much you want it to stand out. I also noticed quite fine iridescent particles when testing this product on my hand, which again is subtle making it suitable for daytime use, and it's certainly not OTT 1970's disco or anything like that!
Perhaps my only qualm with this product, is it states it is for the Eyes and Lips. I tried it on my lips and found it quite awkward and well... like I had tried an eye pencil on my lips. Perhaps they meant as a liner and not on the lip itself? Either way, I think this pencil is best suited to the eye area, perhaps over the cheeks also to highlight them if you were to really work it in so it gave a subtle shimmer.
Also, if I apply foundation to my eyelids before applying this product, although it gives a great base it can also crease a little throughout the day so I occasionally have to blend it in a little more if perhaps I applied too much product, or didn't blend it well enough to begin with.
My overall view of this product, is it's a really fabulous way of adding colour and a sense of warmth around the eye area, especially if you team it with mascara and perhaps a little eyeliner underneath. The shades available seem to be for all skin tones, and are light and workable. If you are after a light shimmery eye crayon, then I would recommend this product.
Summary: It gets alot of use!
