Advantages: Leaves lashes thick and glossy

Disadvantages: Difficult to apply

I'm a complete newbie to Benefit purely for the reason I refuse to fork out the high price of their products, if it wasn't for Glamour magazine giving away one of their mascaras this month I wouldn't be writing this review!

I was a little shocked to find that their Bad Gal Lash mascara retails at just under £10 and not in a good way. Any company that produces a product of this dire quality and expect me to pay that kind of money is having a laugh.

The mascara itself has simple packaging, a black barrel with the name of the product on the side and a silver lidded brush. I think it looks cheap and something that I would buy for a teenager just getting into make-up. It certainly doesn't give the impression of a quality product that commands a high price.

Despite my reservations re the selling price and the packaging I thought I may as well apply the stuff to see what effect it has. On unscrewing the lid and pulling the brush from the tube I was met with a strange whooshing sound, along the lines of the noises the sliding doors on Star Trek make. I was then presented with a very fat, squat brush that looked like a mini Xmas tree that's been dipped in charcoal.

Applying the mascara to my lashes was a nightmare, the brush is so fat and squat that I struggled to get the mascara right to the base of my lashes with out poking myself in the eye and getting black goo all over my eye lids. I had to wipe the excess from my around my eyes and also underneath my eyes after I happened to sneeze at just the wrong moment......typical!

After the rigmarole of attempting to apply the mascara I was pleasantly surprised by the results. My lashes appear thicker and longer and glossy looking. This isn't waterproof however so it's not something I could use on a daily basis as my eyes tend to water easily when it's windy or if I've been cooking (onions especially) so I would keep this for evenings out or special occasions.

For a freebie I'm fairly pleased though when this runs out I won't be buying another one. I can achieve better results with mascaras that cost half the price and are much easier to apply, and don't leave me with panda eyes.

Summary: Not worth the money

Oh dear, maybe I won't bother buying Glamour to get this one after all!
