Advantages: It makes your skin soft and lovely, It smells wonderful, It really does work...
Disadvantages: Did you see that price?, I said DID YOU SEE THAT PRICE!
Picture the scene. Yet again Lady_of_Leisure was to be spotted aimlessly wandering through a department store, about six months ago, just itching to throw her money away on some “comfort” makeup. The infamous San-Francisco company Benefit was undoubtedly getting a great deal of press at the time. With marketing tag-lines like “the return to ladylike” and “Glamourette…a ladylike symbol of style and chic” Benefit seemed determined to get us all kicking back in kitten heels and kitsching it up abit! Most famous of all in their range is their “lip plump!” - didn’t you know? All those famous people who look like they’ve had most of their bottom removed and pumped into their lips actually just use this little cream before they put their lipstick on (apparently). So not to be outshone I insisted on smearing this onto my thin-as-a-bean smackers immediately, but alas I failed to turn into either Jordan or Pete Burns within 5 minutes so decided against this £13.50 investment! ********************************************** ****************************** Instead I was quickly lured by Dr. Feelgood, a beautiful little metal tin with a romanticised 1920’s picture of a couple kissing on the top. It’s a refiner. Yeah. Surely this would provide exactly the kind of meaningless pampering I desired and well, deserved! I don’t have bad skin at all, I wasn’t looking for a refiner, good God, I’d never even heard of refiners: and best of all this little tin was dreadfully expensive: just the ticket! The lady on the counter sat me down and proceeded to explain how my life until this point had been completely meaningless and that only Dr Feelgood could bring light to my otherwise futile existence (or something like that…) then popped open the tin and with a beautifully soft and fluffy sponge gently smeared a sort of congealed
r> oil all over my face! I kid thee not. The tin actually contains 24g net of a colourless and weightless product, which I would liken to thickened Vaseline – but with the added bonus of smelling deliciously old-fashioned, like roses. It’s quoted aim is to smooth pores and fine lines and leave skin feeling silky and matte to the touch, and it contains both Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Interestingly Benefit advocate using this product either on it’s own or over make up. I tend to use it on it’s own and only use it over make up on special occasions – this is probably because I can’t be bothered to wash out the sponge very often. So yes, as you can see I left the department shop £19 lighter and 24g heavier, with a swing in my step and a glow in my cheek. ********************************************** ****************************** But now that we are six months on how am I getting along with Dr Feelgood? I love him like a brother (probably more actually, have you met my brother?). Not only does Dr Feelgood instantly make your skin feel smooth and oh-so-kissable but over a period of time I have found that it actually does refine lines and benefit pores – hoorah! My little tin looks pretty much as full as it did when I bought it so the initial £19 sting seems like a distant memory. The sponge that comes with it has been washed and wringed so many times however that I went back to Benefit and they gave me another one free of charge. I am still a little suspicious about how much this product cost to make – I would guess that the mark-up to Benefit is even greater than for other cosmetics. However, I am fickle: it works, it makes me feel good: it smells wonderful, and I already own it! Thanks for reading.

- 06/11/02 I should not have read this. I should not have read this.
I've just been to Harrods and spent £25 on 2 Clinique products I didn't need just to get the free gift of a make-up bag full of lipstick, perfume, moisturiser etc... actually, it was def. well worth it.
But stop filling my head with more costly cosmetic ideas! |
