Benefit Play Sticks
Advantages: Gives great coverage.
Disadvantages: Not one for thos who like very minimal make up
I was given Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation as a Christmas gift by my parents. I am something of a cosmetics addict and I had seen this whilst shopping at Lakeside with my mum in November. I thought it was thick enough to cover a scar I have on the right side of my jaw line, something which most concealers fail miserably at doing so asked to assistant if I could try it. She obliged and the product did exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, it was just prior to payday so I didn't buy it there and then and must have forgot about the item only to find it wrapped up on Christmas morning.
Our velvety smooth crayon sticks are marvelously fun, easy and encourage you to apply just as much concealer, foundation and powder as you need... its all there in one. The combination of green tea and chamomile soothes your skin while covering. Benefits Play Sticks make covering up child's play.
*About the Product*
A cream to powder foundation stick that helps promote a healthy complexion while giving natural-looking coverage. Scribble in any fun shape and blend for a satin-matte finish. With a variety of silky-smooth shades to choose from, there's a play stick to flatter every skin tone!
I use this product differently depending on my mood and the effect that I want it to have. Usually, I will just use it as a concealer on blemishes, spots and scars however if I am going out somewhere special and want a foundation that will give me good coverage, I turn to Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation every time. To apply either method, you need to twist the cylinder so that the stick is accessible.
As a concealer: To use this as a concealer, I find the most effective way using the stick directly to my skin or the blemishes, spots or under my eyes and simply blending it with a brush.
As a foundation: To use this as a foundation I find it easier to build up the coverage rather than apply too much initially. The first time I used Benefit Playstick Concealer and Foundation on my own was a bit of a disaster as I made this mistake. I used it as a foundation and had plastered way too much of it on. I quickly adjusted to how little of the product you needed for it to be effective and find the best way to apply it as a foundation by usually my fingers to blend and using a foundation brush.
*Price and Availability*
Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation can be bought from a variety of different department stores including Debenhams, John Lewis and House of Fraser. You can also find Benefit counters in the larger Boots stores. It is also available to buy online from www.boots.com if you prefer to buy via the internet.
The price of this product is £24.50. This price is very expensive, especially compared to the price of other foundations and concealers that I have used previously, however it is also one of the best that I have used. Is it worth the money? I think that is something that everyone individually will decide. For me, yes... it is worth the high cost. Half of the price of the dooyoo cheque that is due through my post box any day now. Money well earnt and spent I think.
The packaging: Benefit Playstick Concealer and Foundation comes in a silver cylinder metal tube which is why I was surprised when the assistant told me it was a foundation in addition to a concealer. The packaging splits in the middle and the top half is the lid and the bottom contains the block of concealer/foundation which twists up and down.
The packaging is simple and easy to use. You simply pull off the lid, twist up the concealer/foundation and apply as you wish. And as for its appearance, it is one of the plainer Benefit products which is quite disappointing as I like their quirkiness but it is practical and does the job. What I do love about this packaging is that it is perfect for travel as it can sit nicely in a makeup bag due to its compact, small size.
Colour, feel and consistency: The colour of this product is pretty much the same colour that it looks in the block as it does when applied. The colour of this concealer/foundation is reasonably natural when you blend it in as it adjusts well to your skin tone but you can tell that you are wearing makeup.
As for the consistency, I find that this product has a thick texture which gives you complete coverage. The texture of the product is velvety and soft when applying it to your face. I had read prior to buying this product some people claim that the product was 'chalky' but I have never found this to be the case for me so perhaps this product is different for everyone.
Range of colours: Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation is available in 6 different colours suitable for those with pale skin to those with darker skin. It is extremely important with this product that you get the colour that is suited to your skin because if you don't the effects could be quite disastrous... I mean, you could look awful! So take your time when by the product to test out the colours and select the one that is right for you. Otherwise you might regret it.
Staying power: Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation has an average staying power. I find that when I apply it in the morning, it usually lasts for about 4-5 hours without any signs of fading but after this time it grows fainter.
Longevity of the product: Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation has lasted me just under a year so far and I have about a quarter of the product remaining so it has lasted me a fairly long time. This is having used the product on a daily basis, predominantly as a concealer although occasionally on nights out as a foundation.
It is thick as a foundation over the whole of my face which is why I use No. 7 Intelligent Colour Foundation and then a small amount of this product over the top on certain areas of my face which I find the first foundation hasn't covered as well as I'd have liked.
Are these velvety smooth crayon sticks that are marvelously fun, easy and encourage you to apply just as much concealer, foundation and powder as you need? Velvety smooth crayon sticks? Check. They are gorgeously smooth and make my skin appear even and blemish free. Are they fun and easy? Yes and no. I'm not so sure that they are fun but they are definitely easy to use. And do they encourage you to use as much as you need? I would say so, yes. The stick allows you to apply it bit by bit, applying more if required.
Does this combination of green tea and chamomile sooth your skin while covering? This product certainly doesn't cause my skin to have spots but I'm not entirely sure that it is as good for my skin as it claims and I don't think that it soothes my skin.
*Would I Recommend This Product?*
Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation is a fantastic product to have although at a very expensive cost. If you are looking for a foundation that is thick and concealer almost everything then this could well be the product that you have been searching for although I would not recommend that you use this product like this on a regular basis because 1) it will run out rather quickly and 2) if you suffer from spots and don't remove your makeup every evening you'll make your skin 10 times worse than when you started.
I would not recommend this product to anyone who likes to where minimal make-up. It is very thick but gives excellent coverage.
Benefit Play Stick Concealer and Foundation is a product that I rate very highly. I really have grown to love and depend on this product and really cannot praise it enough. In fact I would go so far as to say that it is easily the best concealer that I have used to date with perfect the exception of Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat. As a foundation, I am not so keen as it is perhaps a bit too much but good for nights out but a little bit over the top for every day at work. My one recommendation is that you true it out in store before you buy as it is a lot of money to spend on a product that you perhaps may not like or buy the wrong colour for your skin.
Summary: A great foundation and concealer
