This review is for the Benefit Smokin Eyes eye make up palette that I bought from Boots recently.
At £28.50 it is not a cheap little set, but then it doesn't look it either! It is the quality that you would expect from Benefit.
The set comes in a little square case that fastens with a magnetic lid. The actual lid of the box has a mirror inside which I find very handy for a little bit of touching up as it is needed.
There are three eyeshadows inside, a pale pink base colour which I use from lashes to brows, a silvery grey colour which I then apply over my lids and under my lower lashes, and an almost black colour which I use in the crease of my eye / at outer corners and under my lower lashes. I find this look looks great on me (how big headed does that sound?!) and it makes me feel confident.
There is a small version of Benefits 'Eye Bright' pink cream which I know is one of their well selling products but I don't use this bit (give me a shout if you want it and I'll gouge it out and send you it!)
There is also a light brown brow gel which I use and it is good for shaping and kind of sticking your brows in place!
Finally there is a black eyeliner, a double ended application brush and a small pair of tweezers.
All in all I think this is great little set and if you have not tried Benefit products before it could be a great way to try.
I won't buy this whole set again, but I will certainly buy their eye shadows again as they go on soooo easily and smooth!
The pencil is too short to really use though on its own, as are the tweezers so for that I am deducting a star!!
I first tried out Benefit Smokin' Eyes as I love Benefit products and was looking for something to make my eye make up look a little more special on nights out. I'm not very skilled at applying make up so I really needed a basic kit and lots of advice on how to apply. The lady at the Benefit counter pointed this out to me.
The packaging for Smokin' Eyes is wonderfully eye-catching. It's smart and appealing and I love seeing it in my make up bag. The box style looks like it wouldn't stay shut, but it has a magnetic clash which keeps the box from falling open. This is handy as it protects the product inside as well as the rest of your make up bag. Considering all it contains, the box is a great size and fits in my clutch bag well for a night out.
This set includes:
- A dark black "smokey" shade which is dabbed in the outer corners of the eye to give the true smokey eyes look
- A grey shade of eye shadow that goes at the bottom of the eyelid
- A light pink shade of eye shadow to go at the top of the eyelid
- A highlighting pink shade to go right under the eyebrow
- A dark smooth cream shadow for the eyebrows
- Two applicators
- Mini tweezers
- A mirror
- A "how to" guide for applying the product.
This really does provide all you need for the full smokey eyes look. I particularly like the black and grey shades of eye shadow. I tend to use my own shade of eye shadow instead of the pink but that's just personal preference. I also feel that the highlighter provided doesn't have much impact and I'd prefer to see a mini 'High Beam' or 'Moon Beam' highlighter by Benefit in the pack. I also don't use the brow cream shadow so I'd rather see another product in the pack. The "how to" guide is the highlight of the product for me as I'm definitely an eye make up beginner! The process is very well explained with descriptions and step by step pictures.
The mirror and applicator brushes are also handy when applying on a night out or on the go.
Look and staying power:
Benefit Smokin' Eyes does give you the full smokey eyes look. You can make it as subtle or dramatic as you want as you can mix and match parts of the kit and add extra layers for more impact.
The product lasts very well on the face. I find that I don't need to reapply at all on a night out even for a whole night of dancing! For best results, I'd use with a good extra highlighter such as High Beam or Moon Beam by Benefit.
Value for money:
At £28.50 this is quite a pricey product. There are cheaper brands available such as 'Collection 2000' and 'Too Faced' which do a version of this. In my experience though, the quality of Benefit products is worth paying for. I have had this product for 2 and a half years and it hasn't yet run out so I would definitely view the initial price as a good investment. If you aren't sure whether the product is for you, I definitely recommend asking the ladies at the Benefit counter to try it first.
The headline says it all. This kit is a fail safe way to learn how to do the perfect smokey eyes. I love Benefit makeup and this comes in a cute little kit that's easy to pop in your handbag and much easier than buying all the components, plus if you bought all the products separately it would cost a fortune!
I'm not going to go through the how tos because it comes with a handy guide that walks you through each step and I'm no makeup expert so I'll just comment on each component. Also, if you go in to a Benefit store or somewhere with a Benefit counter, the assistants will happily show you how to use the product.
BITS AND BOBS
Highlight 1.10g, Pewter Base 1.10g & Deep Charcoal 0.90g - gorgeous shades
Benefit Smokin' Liner 0.39g - this eyeliner doesn't budge and although it is tiny, who has ever finished an eye liner pencil? It lasts quite some time and I often pop this in my handbag on a night out.
Benefit Brow Zings Shaping Wax 1.00g - amazing at tidying brows up and filling in gaps without the harsh look of a pencil. It suits my brunette brows but I'm sure it would be far too dark for fair haired people.
Eye Bright 1.00g - I use this bit almost daily just to brighten my eyes up a little bit.
Benefit Tiny Tweezers - they may be tiny but they're so sharp and precise they've become my main tweezers!
Also included: application brushes and mirror
My only worry with the kit (apart from the brow wax for fair people) is that I'll run out of one thing way before the rest. I'm not sure they're correctly proportioned.
