Benefit Sun Beam
Advantages: quality, packaging, sunkissed glow, easy to use
Disadvantages: expensive, not essential for me
Beauty brand Benefit offer a wide range of cosmetic products. Their 'highlighter' range includes a number of different products to suit all skin tones and skin types. Sun Beam is described as being a 'golden bronze complexion highlighter'.
This highlighter can be applied on bare skin or over the top of make up. It can be used to highlight cheek and brow bones by dabbing it on and blending into skin. Benefit promise that your skin will left with a 'natural, sunkissed radiance'.
A bronze coloured cardboard box houses this product. The highlight is presented in a little bottle which looks like a nail polish. The bottle is quite simple in design - gold coloured with a white, screw top lid which includes an application brush. This highlighter has a 6 month shelf life from first use.
~Price and Availability~
A 13ml bottle of Sun Beam can be purchased from all Benefit stockists including Boots and House of Fraser. It is also available online from those shop websites and also www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk. The retail price of this product is around the £19.00 mark. The Benefit website also offers a 4ml tester bottle for £8.00.
I quite like the Benefit brand and own a few of their products. I didn't buy this myself. My friend received it as part of her Christmas hamper from his Auntie and being very paled skin, decided that a bronzing highlighter wasn't the best product for her. We carried out a few swaps of beauty products and I ended up with this 13ml of Sun Beam. I already own another highlighter in this range - High Beam - and have had positive experiences with it.
To be fair, I'm not a girl who normally uses bronzing products either. I favour a flush of healthy pink colour on my cheeks but was willing to put this to the test. I'm not very pale and would describe my skin tone as being 'medium' - not too dark nor too pale. I don't like to wear a lot of make up and prefer a natural look so hoped that this highlighter wouldn't leave my cheeks looking like I had been tangoed! I do feel that this highlighter is suited to all skin tones providing you aren't self conscious about having a bronzed appearance.
~Beam Me Up!~
I do like the packaging for this product as a bottle with a brush seems very apt for a liquid. There is no need for additional brushes to be used and it is a very transportable little bottle and very secure too. When I use this highlighter, I ensure my skin is well moisturised to ensure there is no dry patches for the liquid to cling too. As far as face make up goes, I sometimes dust some light face powder across my skin with blusher. I rarely use liquid foundation. Normally, I just apply this directly onto naked skin and I find this works best for me.
The liquid itself is a gorgeous golden colour. The brush picks up quite a bit of the rather thick liquid and the excess need to be brushed off back into the bottle. This is a very easy highlighter to work with and not messy in the slightest. I only use it on my cheekbones at the moment but when we get into the better weather, I will try it on my brow bones too. I find it best to dot a few blobs of the highlighter on each cheek and then add more as I go a long.
This highlighter blends beautifully across my cheekbones and feels cool and light on my skin. It is very gentle too and only has a slight 'cosmetic' scent - nothing major at all. It spreads well and with a few dots of highlighter, a lovely, subtle golden tint is evident on my skin. I find it to look very natural and it is easy to build up for a more sunkissed appearance. I find that I need to apply two light layers to create the right look for my skintone.
Those who prefer a deeper, bronzer appearance will need to apply more but I am pleased with the subtle sunkissed appearance that this offers with very little product. My complexion appears very healthy and my cheekbones are highlighted perfectly. When the sun catches a certain way, a very subtle shimmer is evident but nothing cheap or tacky looking. I look like I've had a touch of the sun but without the sunburn that I always seem to experience!
I like the way Sun Beam highlights my skin and gives a healthy glow without being over the top. It is perfect for giving a little bit of a bronzed look without tanning or going on the sun beds. I think it looks nice with a natural looking lip gloss and a sweep of black mascara. It definitely looks better than fake tan in my opinion as it is bronzed rather than orange. Whilst this highlighter is on my skin, I don't find that it clogs it up. My skin is left able to breathe. It lasts for most of the day without fading away and is easily removed with some make up remover liquid or cosmetic wipes.
Okay, this is an expensive product but if you can afford it and wish to have a bronzed glow then buy it. It lasts incredibly well and remains fresh inside the bottle. I doubt I could use it all within the recommended 6 month timescale though. I use this often and mainly when I just want a quick skin pick me up. I do personally prefer High Beam as it as a pink tone but Sun Beam is a lovely product to use and I can highly recommend it. It isn't an essential product for me personally.
Benefit often offer little tester sets where you can experience all the different highlighter products. This would be ideal to buy rather than splashing out on a load of products that may not suit you.
Thanks for reading :)
Summary: I prefer High Beam but this is good too!
