Advantages: Shine Control, Suitable For Combination Skin, None Irritant

Disadvantages: None

Foundation has to be the most aptly named item of make up.

Without a good base for your make up you will end up with disastrous results. It is important to choose your foundation carefully, it is the base that the rest of your make up will be applied to, get this wrong and the whole effect will be ruined.

If your foundation doesn't last or it fades then so will your blusher and eye shadow. People make jokes about using a trowel to apply make up but it's not a bad example. If you think of your foundation as the plaster on your walls, would you bother to paint them if the plaster was all cracked and flaking off? I don't think so. Foundation can also hide blemishes and discolorations in the skin. There are so many different kinds available you are sure to find one for the purpose you need. You may find that you have one for daytime wear and one for evening. Some people have problems with thread veins and a good foundation can be invaluable in disguising them and boosting confidence.

It is therefore a good idea to think about what you want in a foundation before you make your purchase. A thick, dark and heavy foundation maybe just too much for a day at the office or an event where there will be strong lighting. Similarly if your out for a heavy night on the town with lots of bold make up you may prefer a shade darker than your normal skin tone to enable you to carry off your make over. One important factor is of course the colour of your skin as well as the shade. I'm not too sure how Asian and dark skinned people go on, is there a limited availability in foundations? I would be interested to know. As for skin tones you can usually find many different foundation shades to choose from that will compliment the natural colour of your skin.

Your skin type is also a factor, i.e. do you have oily skin, dry skin or sensitive skin. I would say that my skin type is combination with a tendency to be sensitive. I can get spot
s around my nose and chin but my forehead can actually be flaky and dry. When I worked in the office and I was stuck in all day I noticed that my skin would often look quite shiny and greasy after a few hours. It therefore prompted me to look for a foundation that would help to combat this problem. I decided that I needed something for combination skin that wouldn't cause irritation, helped prevent shine and was as close as possible to my natural skin colour. I am quite fair skinned and anything too dark just looks ridiculous.

I had purchased Boots 17 products before and found them to be good value for money so I set of to my local Boots store to have a look at their range and maybe compare them with the slighter more expensive No 7 products.

I decided to purchase a No 7 product for the evenings, as this was a slightly heavier and darker foundation. The daytime foundation was still a priority and I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that the No 17 range had a shine control foundation. The No 17 logo is prominently displayed on the front of the bottle in Blue with those all-important words, 'shine control foundation' underneath. The bottle itself is see-through plastic, which enables you to get a good idea of the shade before making your purchase. I also like the fact that it isn't in a tube. It comes in an upright bottle that has a pump action. You probably need a couple of quirts to cover the whole face but at least you don?t get an overload and end up with wasted foundation.

It comes in four shades which are: delicate beige, perfectly fair, nicely natural and warm amber, they are all 50ml bottles. I chose the delicate beige as this appeared to be the nearest to my natural skin tone. I have to say that when applied it is difficult to tell that I am wearing foundation it is so natural. It covers dark rings under the eyes and blemishes reasonably well but you may need to use a concealer if the rings are very dark or y
ou have spots. There is nothing worse than people who wear dark foundation over their face and you can clearly see where it finishes around their neck! With this I can apply it over my face and chin but if I stopped there you wouldn't notice as it blends in so well.

I was also impressed with the fact that it contains UVA/UVB sunscreens. It is not suitable for sunbathing, as it doesn't offer that level of protection. It does however help with the everyday protection as the suns rays are shining even though we may not feel them. This must be a positive step in preventing premature aging.

On the back of the bottle it claims that it is lightly medicated make up for combination skin. It controls shine while moisturising drier areas for a natural looking finish. It is fragrance free and dermatologically tested. It therefore appears to have everything that I was looking for. I have had no irritation and I have been using this foundation for around 3 years, believe me some foundations do irritate and cause spots.

The cost is only £4.50 and if I use it everyday it still lasts me a few months. At the moment Boots are offering an extra 500 points if you spend £10 on No 17 products. This is almost like getting one free as 500 points is worth £5 off your next purchase.

I would definitely advise you to check it out as the perfect daytime foundation, especially for combination skin.

I've used this on and off for a while now. It is a good foundation but I still get some breakthrough shine on my nose and chin even though I also used their oil control powder. But it does last a few hours longer than other (more expensive) brands of foundation and is great value for money.

An excellent op. I like No 7 foundation, but find good value with No 17 stuff.
