A great little mascara that lives up to its claims for an unbelievably low price

In the past I thought nothing of spending upwards of £20 on a decent mascara from the designer brand labels. As I'm very fair with blond eyelashes and eyebrows mascara is a must for me and it's the one makeup item I NEVER leave the house without having some on. So I didn't mind paying extra for what I thought would be a much better product and frequently spent the extra pennies for the likes of YSL and Elizabeth Arden.

Oh how things change when you get a mortgage! Now I would no more spend £20 on a mascara, or any other item of makeup - with the possible exception of foundation - than I would poke myself in the eye! Nowadays my mascara shopping tends to be done in a hurry and whichever I see in my colour (brown/black) first that happens to be under a tenner is probably the one that I'll buy. I have to admit I don't put a lot of thought into it. I'm blessed with quite long lashes anyway and usually just get confused by all the different claims made by all the different varieties. Do I want my lashes to look longer? Or thicker? Or curlier? None of the above. Any of the above. I really don't care! I just want something that will coat my lashes easily and clump free and give them some colour so I look a little less albino before leaving the house!

Hence how I ended up trying out the Boots No 17 Ultimate Length mascara the last time I dashed into Boots. I found myself next to the No 17 stand, saw the mascara, saw they had it in brown/black and at a cost of £4.69 there was no doubt it was heading home with me. Even I hadn't expected to get a mascara for that price so that was a bonus! Looking on the Boots website, now it is reduced even further to £4 which is fortuitous as I'm almost out so I'll be stocking up again tomorrow!

The mascara itself looks pretty much like any other mascara, in a tube about 5 inches long with a screw off lid which also holds the magic wand for applying the product. The tube it a plain black one with pretty purple writing. It advises us that the mascara "visibly extends and separates to create ultimate lash length" and tells us that it is non-clogging and easy to apply, is dermatologically tested and is fragrance free. Quite why any manufacturer would want to make a mascara with a fragrance in it is beyond me, but what do I know?! Initially, for hygiene purposes, it comes wrapped in clear plastic, which is easily removed by tearing it along perforations.

The biggest marketing campaigns for mascaras now seem to focus on the wands supplied in the tube and the number of different claims and miracles that can be achieved with these wands is neverending! This particular one is what I would describe as a traditional mascara wand. Around 4 inches in length with about an inch of bristles on the end which are neither curved nor overly spaced out. You simply sweep the bristled end through your lashes from root to tip and hey presto your lashes are covered.

So how have I found using this mascara? Overall I've been very pleased with it I have to say. I was a bit dubious at first solely because of the very cheap price, but I have been most pleasantly surprised. Obviously it isn't of the same quality as the top end brands but I must admit I don't have any complaints about it.

The wand is easy to use. When you pull it out of the tube it isn't overly clogged up with product. I've had mascaras in the past where I've had to wipe excess product off onto a tissue before use, obviously wasting a lot each time, but not with this one. Admittedly, sometimes there is a bit of extra on the very end tip of the wand, but not too much that you can't simply scrape it off on the edges of the tube to be pushed back in with the wand when you've finished.

Moving from the base of my lashes going in very slight zig-zaggy motions to the tips the wand coats my eyelashes very nicely without leaving them clogged up or clumpy. I tend to go over my lashes twice at a time but only giving them one "proper" coat as I don't like heavy or fake looking makeup and this Ultimate Length leaves them separated but looking naturally coloured. It's also easy to coat my bottom lashes without leaving them covered in clumps and the thinner end to the wand makes it easier to get into the corners of my eyes.

I often wear contact lenses and I've never had any problems with this mascara reacting badly to those or causing any irritation to my eyes whatsoever. Once applied it lasts all day on my lashes without fading or any speckling onto my cheeks but it is easily removed with my usual cleanser/toner routine. Any last specks that the cleanser doesn't manage to get, the toner always washes away and I've never ended up with panda eyes or black patches on my pillow in the morning. I have had this particular tube for around 6 months now and it is just about ready for replacing. Not only is it running out but it is also drying out a bit, but general advice is not to keep mascara for longer than this anyway and I would be buying another around now regardless of how much was left. With daily use I'm happy enough with it's longevity.

All in all I've been very impressed and pleased with this mascara and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again (and will be doing so in the morning!). It obviously can't compete with the very expensive designer brands but I would say it more than holds it own against any mid-price mascaras and as long as they keep making this I wouldn't even contemplate going up a brand and spending a tenner or more on No7 or Max Factor, for example, when I can get this for less than £5 and be more than pleased with the results of it. It definitely lives up to the claims it makes on the tube and so what more can a girl ask for?!

Available from Boots branches and their online stores it has the added bonus of collecting you Advantage Points as well. The one area which I find slightly disappointing, especially from a large company such as Boots, is that this mascara is only available in two colours, black and brown/black. Whilst this isn't an issue for me personally as I always go for the latter, it might be an issue for other shoppers and it's unusual for such a well-known brand to have such a limited choice.

I really want to award this mascara 5 stars as personally I love it and have no problems with it but, as a consumer, I feel I have to knock one off for lack of choice with regards to colours, but if I had the choice I'd really award it 4.5 stars!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A Good Mascara slightly let down by a bit too much durability.

I'm always looking out for make-up that works at a reasonably cheap price. I've previously written about Boots 17 Eyeshadow Solo Pots, and having that experience made me want to try one of their mascaras. I know the 17 range feels a bit like a teenage version of the No. 7 range, having funkier colours than it's sister range, but that didn't put me off trying it. I've used mascaras from the No. 7 range before and wasn't overly impressed with the results. For £4.69 (at time of purchase from Boots) and on my Boots Advantage Card Points as a treat, I thought I'd give it a go.

The product comes in two colours: Black or Brown/Black. I thought I'd go for the Black shade as my lashes are quite long anyway to make the colour stand out a bit more. This product comes in a black cylindrical tube with a purple band around the lid and 17 Ultimate Length Mascara in metallic silver and purple along the length. It comes individually wrapped in plastic so you can be sure no-one has used the product before you - this is easy to remove at the perforated strip.

On the rear of the tube it tells you it "visibly extends and separates to create ultimate lash length" and that it is "non-clogging and easy to apply. Dermatologically tested. Fragrance-Free" it also gives the company informations and website. The product comes in an 8ml tube which lasts quite a while.

The cap twists off easily to reveal a good length wand with a small round brush to apply mascara to your eyelashes. This brush is tapered towards the tip to make it easier to apply the product to lower lashes or the corners, and this helps to give greater definition.

The product itself has a faintly chemical smell which is pretty much like every single mascara I have ever smelled (with the possible exception of Maybelline). To be honest, I prefer a mascara to be without too strong a scent so this was perfect for me. The mascara is a thick, glossy black paste which coats the brush, and there is a small lip on the inside of the tube which prevents too much product coming out and causing unnecessary clumps. On application, the brush easily coats each eyelash and does give a greater impression of length, with the tapered point doing a good job for lower lashes as I mentioned before. This is not one of those False Eyelash mascaras though, so do not expect mammoth lashes, but it does give a nice extra bit of length and definition.

I was impressed with how long the mascara stayed on my eyelashes. It's had quite a test and has lasted through teary hormonal moments, the wind blowing through the visor of my crash helmet and normal day to day rubbing of eyes. It doesn't claim to be waterproof and I was pleased it lasted through the tears. It also didn't melt in high temperatures, which was a bonus given the recent hot weather. Which leads to another point - taking it off. It does take quite a bit of rubbing with eye make-up remover to get the product off. The two-phase eye make-up removers do work better than creams, but I still needed a couple of attempts with a folded and soaked piece of cotton wool effectively scraping it off my eyelashes. I'm removing one star from the overall rating here because this could lead to dragging make-up remover pads over the delicate eye area which I feel isn't great for skin.

On the whole I am very impressed with this mascara and would definitely buy it again. I am certainly not put off by the funky appearance of the packaging and love the fact that it is good value for money. It is only made and sold by Boots, but there are usually offers on make-up and getting the Advantage Card points make it a worthwhile purchase.

        Thanks for reading.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        A great budget buy

I've realised that I seem to have a lot of mascaras. This is partly because it is my essential makeup item - I have very fair eyelashes and they're practically invisible without mascara. However it's also because I enjoy wearing coloured mascaras - right now there are 6 different coloured mascaras in my makeup bag!

The 17 brand, available exclusively from Boots, is one of my favourite budget beauty brands. As the name suggests it is aimed at teenagers and younger people but I reckon I'm still enough to use it :-P I've been using it for over a decade (crikey, that makes me sound old!) so there must be something going for it!

I have this Ultimate Length mascara in two shades - Teal, a dark blue, and Olive, a deep green. It is also available in black and brown. In fact, checking the Boots website it seems that only black and brown are available, which is somewhat worrying - have these two shades been discontinued or are they just not popular enough to sell online?

My packaging is slightly different to the picture. My mascara tubes are dark grey with a silver 17 logo and pale blue and silver writing. The 17 range has recently been redesigned to appear more glitzy - the mascara tube is now black with purple writing.

The mascara wand is quite thin and straight. This makes it very easy to apply, even on smaller and shorter lashes, and into the corners. Because of the paleness of my lashes, and the colour of the mascaras, I find two coats are needed to produce an effect. Using this mascara, my eyelashes appear longer and well-defined, though not particularly thick. However being 'Ultimate Length' mascara this is to be expected!

The only problem I have with this mascara is that it is very difficult to remove. I always have to rub harder to get it off my lashes, more so than any other mascara I own. This can be a bit annoying.

I really like this mascara. It produces a really good longer lash effect, comes in exciting different colours (at least it did when I last checked!) and all for the bargain price of £4.49. This is the cheapest mascara I buy and it's a great price! I will continue to buy it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great budget buy.
