Every time I look for a new mascara they seem to get more and more expensive so I was looking for a cheap but good quality brand. I've always trusted 17 at Boots products so decided to give this a go. It cost me £6.29 which I'd say is an average price for a drugstore mascara.
I have seen this product on display quite a few times and the packaging seems to change. It comes in a normal mascara plastic tube with a screw-off lid. When I bought mine the tube was black with metallic purple writing and patterns but recently in Boots I saw it with a white tube and pink and black writing. The name of the product is printed on once side of the tube, whilst information such as the ingredients list is printed on the other.
The product is easy to use, just use the wand to apply the mascara to your lashes a few times, and done. Once applied, the mascara makes lashes look longer, fuller and thicker. Usually with other mascaras I have to sort of wiggle the wand about a bit on my lashes but I don't need to do that with this. There's rarely clumps in this mascara, unless it's almost run out and there's dry bits in the bottom, but I guess this happens with most mascaras.
The product stays on all day and has never once flaked underneath my eyes like some mascaras have done in the past. At the end of the day my lashes look exactly like they did when I first applied the mascara. The product is fairly easy to remove. I use a cleansing wipe to remove mine and it comes off fairly easily.
I would definitely recomment this product to anyone looking for a good priced, good quality mascara.
I'm really not sure about this. I only bought it because it was on half price offer and when I bought it, I thought it was the best mascara ever. I love thick, clumpy, long eyelashes and have a stupid number of mascaras (including a few other 17 ones) which I wear everyday. At first, this was my best mascara. It's very wet and dries creating a really clumpy look, which I personally love. I'm not sure if it's the mascara, my technique or the shape of my eyes, but it has a tendencies to go everywhere when I'm applying it. However, overall I thought this was a great mascara and would've given it 5/5.
I've had it for about 3 weeks now and I've really gone off it. My eyes are constantly watering when I wear it, but more annoyingly it seems to have either ran out/lost its touch. Usually mascaras last me a good 6-8 weeks but this one has seemed to have run out stupidly quickly. I wear four mascaras every morning including this one and I might as well just skip this one, as it doesn't really make a difference anymore. I would like to reinvest, but it's about £7.00 which is pretty dear for three weeks use.
I paid £4.99 for this mascara from Boots and I received a free eyeshadow quad with it.
The brush is quite large in size, it's the largest mascara brush in my collection. The mascara is available in four different shades, I opted for the black shade as my eyelashes are naturally light and fair. The mascara is fragrance free, although I can still detect the usual "mascara smell" to it.
The mascara is easy to apply, despite the large brush. It covers the lashes well, even the corner ones, and it doesn't feel sticky or clumpy. The black shades defines the eyes really well. It manages to cover my light lashes, making them appear longer and darker.
The mascara gives great volume and definition. It's easy to use and it glides on without any pulling and/ or tugging. It's also easy to remove at the end of the day. I find that I can remove the mascara simply by wiping a baby wipe over it. It doesn't leave any residue on your lashes after use and it doesn't build up on your lashes either.
The packaging looks really cool and striking. My mascara lasted for three months before I threw it away. I never keep a mascara for longer than three months anyway as bacteria can build up, leading to eye infections e.t.c.
A great mascara to define and lengthen lashes.
Not having particularly long eyelashes means I'm a sucker for any product that claims to add volume and make my lashes longer. So, when I saw this product I was immediately drawn in and ended up buying it on the Boots 3 for 2 offer!
17's Va Va Voom Volume Mascara claims to give you 'dramatically volumised lashes with party-proof staying power.' It also says that it has an 'Extreme volume building brush for a false lash effect.'
The mascara is only sold at Boots stores, for £6.29. The product is sold in 8ml tubes and is available in Black and Black Brown. Sometimes the range can be found on 3 for 2.
The product is sold in a normal mascara tube, but it is slightly thicker than the usual size of mascara tubes. The tube is black with a purple and sliver pattern on it. The tube says 'Va Va Voom' across it, and then '17' at the top. At the bottom of the tube it says 'volume mascara' and on the back it states that it is 'derma logically tested, and fragrance free' it also says the contact address for Boots.
After unscrewing the lid and removing the brush from the tube, you will notice that the brush is much bigger than most normal sized mascara brushes. The bristles are tightly compacted on the brush; this is to help it build 'extreme volume lashes'.
When you pull the wand out of the tube, it does wipe most of the excessive mascara off the brush, but you can get a small build up of mascara at the bottom of the brush, where it is too small to be wiped. Before applying I do recommend you make notice to wipe this off, otherwise you end up with mascara all over your face!
To apply all you have to do is stroke the mascara wand over your eye lashes, exactly as you would with any other mascara. How many times you do this depends on how much volume you want your lashes to have. If you put too many layers of the product on you lashes then they can become heavy looking and can somewhat resemble spiders legs, so you have to be careful on how much you apply at a time.
This mascara can be difficult to get on the corners of your eye lashes, and on your lower lashes, due to the large brush, it is possible it just requires you to be patient and steady, so that you can apply it carefully.
Once the mascara has dried on your eye lashes it leaves them looking volumised and longer. It leaves your eye lashes separated, but nicely volumised. I wouldn't say it provides a 'false lash effect', but I have not actually come across a mascara that actually does! They do, though, make your lashes much bigger.
The mascara lasts all day and or night, so it really does have 'party proof staying power'! I have never known this product to flake under my eyes, and even though it's not waterproof, it won't smudge or run easily.
To remove the mascara you can just use your normal make up removing product, as it comes off easily enough.
This mascara has never irritated my eyes or caused my eyes to itch.
In conclusion, the price of this mascara is reasonable and it does a good job of volumising your lashes. It does what it says on the packet and, with the quirky tube; it looks good in your bag! In short: it's a good quality product for a good price. This is why I have rated it 4 out of 5 stars, to gain a fifth star it would have had to be available in more colours, easier to apply and the tube would have to wipe the excess mascara off the end of the brush.
You can visit www.boots.co.uk for more information on the product, or to order it online, or you can go in store to purchase.
Thank you for reading; I hope this review was of some use to you!

My name is Melanie and I'm a make up addict. Yep I simply love the stuff and am rather proud of the collection I own too which at the moment with the all of going out I've been doing I'm really grateful for! The other week in Boots I was looking for a blue coloured mascara to add to my collection for nights out really and to try and get out away from the black I always wear and so when I spotted this one at the price of £6.29 a tube I was unable to resist purchasing it because in the past on here I have read good reviews of this mascara and me...I'm normally not impressed with any of them!
The tube the mascara comes in is mainly black with metallic flashes of purple colour and mainly silver writing on it to which we are told that it is 17 Va Va Voom Volume Mascara and then on the back of the tube and in white writing we are told that it is 'Dramatically volumised with party proof staying power. Extreme volume building brush for a false lash effect. Dermatolgically tested. Fragrance Free' and contact details for Boots are given. The majority of the tube houses the mascara then to the top of it there is lid that twists on/off and holds on the bottom of a black plastic wand a really large black hair style brush majorly coated with the colour you choose and the colour options for this mascara are black, brown/black and electric blue (mine is the electric blue shade) and that colour is dotted on the top of the mascara and we are told on that what the colour is called of course. Nice enough packaging, doesn't look one bit cheap and although I store this mascara along with many other items of make up in a bag I haven't found the lettering and the likes to rub off or get damaged at all so it stays looking in nice condition.
The Mascara Itself:
With its large brush (which doesn't have an angled piece to the end of it) this brush covers lashes fast and easily. I do find it difficult to get into and near the corners of my eyes with this brush as it is so chunky however it is achievable with time and patience. I find the tube lifts off any lumps of the colour/liquid as I pull the wand with the brush on the end of it out meaning that I get a relatively thick liquid that is richly and highly pigmented in colour. The colour is glossy, dries fast once transferred on the eyelashes and doesn't feel heavy or agitate my sensitive eyes at all. In the case of my blue colour shade it is rich and highly visible and not a dull dark blue but as promised an 'electric' (bright) blue shade.
However although this is nice enough and doesn't cause me any issues at all on, even when drunk and I cry my eyes out or rub my tired eyes (like last night being out and drunk till half four in the morning lol) it stays put and I feel that although it defines my lashes well and lifts and separates them somewhat it doesn't volumise them and make them look thicker at all. I'm not able to say that this stuff makes them into spiders legs either however in appearance but I expected a much thicker look to my sparse eyelashes....which I don't ever get with this product though it holds its colour on for hours and is noticeable.
It is easy to remove with make up remover and although I like it and love the colour that I own I don't feel this does much for me really and at £6.29 for a Boots own product I think that is overpriced for what you get sadly!
Only available in Boots stores.

This mascara is from boots and costs just over £6 (before the vat increase it coast £6 exactly) being a number 17 product, it can only per purchased in boots. At £6 i really wasn't expecting much from this mascara, normal i go for either benefit bad gal mascara or diorshow ultra lengthening curving mascara, both of these are around the £20 mark. This mascara comes in blue, brown and black, and you should be careful not to pick up the wrong one, since they are not very clearly marked, only marked by a small sticker on the top of the mascara.
When i opened this mascara i was happy to see the brush was similar to the brush on benefit mascara, large and thick, it holds a lot of mascara and it coats your lashes easily with just a few strokes, this mascara i have tried in both brown and black, and i myself prefer the black, but there is little difference. The brown is a very dark brown, you would have to be paying seriously close attention to notice it wasn't black. This mascara gives so much volume, it does exactly what it says, i found there was very little difference in quality from this mascara to much more expensive brand mascaras, and with the huge difference in price this mascara is a favourite for me!
I found despite it not being water proof, if takes a lot for this to smudge down your face, it isnt flaky at all, and is a brilliant mascara, gives huge volume and length to your lashes, some one even once asked me where i got my false eye lashes from when wearing this mascara. This mascara obviously isnt for those who want the more natural look as the name suggests, its for those who want volumeous wow lashes, a false lash effect, with minimum effort and very little in the way of expense. Cheap mascara in the past have proved a disappointment, but i was very impressed with this! The only small downside is that i find it takes forever to wash off, but a disadvantage well worth living with for such a great result for only £6.m
I love the Boots 17 products, and can't help but be drawn in to have a look whenever I walk past a Boots store, be it big or small. I think I am a bit like a magpie and drawn to shiney things!! They always have a special offer and new products out so I am always intrigued to see what new shades of nail polish they have. Once when I went in if you spent over £6 you got the new 'va va voom' mascara for free. I bought two products and snapped up the offer. I didn't even need the mascara, and I have another brand which I love, so it was a bit of a silly purchase in some ways, I just can't seem to help myself!
The mascara is quite a large tube, black with a funky purple print on it. To be honest the packaging didn't really appeal to me, as I felt it made it look quite immature. The mascara was black and the wand long and thin. Not fancy and clubbed like some of the new ones on the market. I opened it up and found it easy to apply. It didn't spread over to the back of my lid like my current mascara does, so it didn't need correcting with a cotton bud, which would add even more time and mess to the process.
The fist few applications were a little clumpy, but this always happens with new mascara. It settled down after a while. The colour lasted all day, and didn't rub off to give me panda eyes. It was easy t remove with my usual standard make up remover.
The only downside to this mascara was that it didn't give me quite as much extra legnth and width, the extra ooomph that my usual mascara (max factor false lash effect) does. It was cheap, useable, and did a good job for the price. Unfortunately it just didn't do an excellent job for the price!
When I went to Boots to replace my 17 foundation I couldn't resist taking advantage of their 3 for 2 offer on the 17 range and ended up with 2 new mascaras as well. The first one I tried out was terrible so I was really hoping this Va Va Voom Volume Mascara would be worth the £6.29 price.
The tube is quite thick and chunky compared to a lot of mascaras and the packaging design is quite cool and modern with a purple and silver design on a black background.
When I opened the tube the first thing I noticed was the size of the brush. It's absolutely huge! It's about the same length as an average mascara brush but it's really thick with long bristles that taper towards the end of the brush. After getting over the sheer size of the brush the next thing I noticed was that the mascara seemed to be very unevenly distributed along the brush with a really thick coating at either end and hardly any along the length.
The first time I used the mascara it was a total disaster. It didn't seem to really do anything for my lashes and I ended up with more mascara on my eyelids and my nose than my lashes. Not one to give up easily I kept experimenting until I got the application method just right and I was much more impressed with the results.
Because the brush is so huge and the bristles so long it's impossible to get right into the roots of the lashes like I normally would without ending up with loads of mascara on the eyelids and looking a total mess so I have to just apply it from slightly further up instead. It does go on smoothly and evenly as long as I make sure to wipe any excess off the brush before I use it and it separates my lashes well and doesn't clump.
It does give a lot of extra volume to my lashes without looking thick or clumpy and I can easily do 2 coats before it starts to stick my lashes together a bit. I do really like the look of it on my lashes but the only slight negative thing is that it feels quite heavy.
It boasts of having party proof staying power and I would agree with this. It stays on all night without smudging or flaking and it looks as good at the end of the night as it did when I applied it. It does take a bit more effort to get off than some mascaras but as long as you have a decent makeup remover it's easy enough.
Since up until recently all of my mascaras were in varying shades of black, so I decided to look for an electric blue for a bit of variety. I happened upon Boots 17 Va Va Voom Mascara. It also comes in black, brown black and Aqua.
The tube itself is very trendy and seems to be aimed at young teens - It's black with purple and silver with what looks like dancing ladies on it at some sort of fashionable disco/club/wherever the happening people seem to be. Personally I'm not bothered about the tube but I know some people my age aren't keen on the packaging that is clearly aimed at much younger girls.
Upon opening the tube I was alarmed to discover there had been a terrible mistake, for there instead of the applicator brush was a gigantic bog brush... Oh no wait it *was* the applicator brush. My lordy, it's massive. Because of it's colossal size it makes it extremely difficult to cover your lashes fully, and the only way to do so causes you to paint your eyeballs blue too, which is not altogether pleasant.
However, I will say that after two coats the bits of my lashes I managed to cover looked really cool, the electric blue colour came out very nicely indeed. I didn't notice much of a difference to the length of my lashes however, for me it had the same effect as most mascaras but not having used the other colours I don't know if they're more effective in that department. I used normal make up wipes to get it off and it came away very easily.
You can find this mascara at Boots for £5.99. A bit pricey but if you can find it on offer it's worth giving it a whirl.
Well, I have yet to find a mascara I really like so when I saw this one, with £2 off, in Boots, a brand I trust, I thought it was worth a try.
The packaging is suitably "funky" for no 17 and one of the main appeals of the Mascara was that the pot/tube/receptacle/thing it comes in looks quite big. I thought I was getting more mascara for my money. Actually I think the container is big but the end is blocked up so the actual inside cavity is much smaller than the outside as on further inspection I found it to be 8ml of mascara. The same as other mascaras with much smaller containers so I think that is a bit misleading.
Onto the actual mascara, it's not very good. The wand is far too big so it makes application clumsy and eyelashes clumpy. The actual mascara is very thick which combined with the bristle-style wand means that you get little or no eyelash separation because the thick mascara sticks the bristles of the brush together, you might as well have no brush! Other mascaras have more rigid plastic or silicone bristles but not this one.
Overall on application the mascara is clumpy and provides no length only stiff, thick wodges of eyelash, I wouldn't recommend buying it but if you want a volumising mascara get Rimmel Volume Flash mascara in stead for better eyelash definition. I wouldn't say this Va Va Voom mascara is a good representation of no 17 products which are normally much better.
However I have used worse mascaras - hence the 2 stars!
Hope this is helpful to all on the epic quest of finding a good mascara!
By Jove I think I've got it! My perfect mascara for under a tenner - yayyy!
After years (literally!) of trying a different mascara every few months I've actually found one that I will willing part with my cash for - repeatedly! I refuse to spens over £15 on a product that only lasts a couple of months - I don't have the pennies but I do want to look good, without having to fuss around in a morning. This product is a very reasonable price, usually you can find an offer too so that's even better! The colours are lovely and true, the application is easy - doesn't clump or flake, you can coat as lightly or heavily as you wish without turning into a spider, I don't look like a panda by the end of the day and it is fine to use with contact lenses - I'm sold!
As I have very fair and short eyelashes I am always on the lookout for a mascara to give me that extra length and wow factor.
I purchased Boots 17 Va Va Voom Mascara for the first time just before Christmas at £5.99 as there was a "buy one get one free offer". I felt the mascara was reasonably priced and I'm always open to trying new products so I thought I'd give this one a go.
I inititially found this mascara extremely difficult to apply as the brush is much bigger than other mascaras I've used. I ended up with mascara on my skin underneath the lower eyelashes and it really took weeks of practice to almost get it right.
The mascara is available in four shades - black, brown black, aqua and electric blue.
Unfortunately, even now I still can't seem to manage to not get mascara on my skin. However, I'm now not in a position where I have to wash it all off and start again. I simply use a cotton bud to remove the unwanted mascara.
On a positive note, the mascara is great and most certainly does give your eyelashes the claimed va va voom! It gives great length and fantastic coverage. It's just a shame the brush is so huge. I would recommend this product but would suggest you practice before getting ready for that special night out.
Boots 17 Va Va Voom Mascara
Well I seem to have made one mistake after another just recently when buying mascaras whatever I seem to purchase leaves me very disappointed and wishing I had bought a good facial cream instead. The last one I bought, (I won't mention its name .......... just think Cheryl Cole!), had me standing in front of my bathroom mirror for half an hour just trying to get a hint of coverage.
Anyway as part of my xmas box I received a Boots gift voucher and as I didn't need anything in particular at that time I thought I would have another attempt at the mascaras. I studied virtually every one I could find in Boots and decided in the end on their own No 17 brand. I think I went for the look of the packaging more than anything it gives the impression of a good night out with the girls. The outer casing is black and shiny purple with white circles and stars all over it and girls in shiny white dancing all over the cap of it. It gives the impression of giving a sexy, super lash and even boasts that it gives "dramatically volumised lashes with party proof staying power. Extreme volume building brush for a false lash effect."
When I opened my new purchase I was very pleasantly surprised to find how large and thick the brush was, much bigger than the usual mascaras I had tried before. It slid in and out of its casing with ease ....... no pulling and pushing involved and after having used it for about 4 weeks now has not developed any clumping or excessive build up on the brush.
When applied to the lashes I can have a half decent look with just one coverage, great if your in a hurry, and with 2 applications it gives a lovely long lash look that is very full and thick. It never, as yet, leaves the lashes looking clumpy, they don't stick together at all, it just gives a smooth long lash, thick look that I am very pleased with. When it came to removing the mascara I found that it was removed easily with my usual eye make-up remover, without the need for scrubbing or more remover having to be applied.
When you weigh up the cost of this mascara in comparison to other more expensive brands on the market, for me this one wins hands down. It is inexpensive at £5.86 and does exactly what the more expensive brands claim to do. So I am very happy with this one and I would deffinatley be buying this again next time around.

Thank you for reading !
I love different colours of mascara so when I found this Va Va Voom mascara as part of the Boots 17 range and saw that it came in Aqua - a bright turquoise-ish blue - I had to try it. (The other colours are Black, Brown Black, and Electric Blue, but I already had mascaras in all of those colours!)
The mascara cost £5.99 which I thought was a very reasonable price, and I got a free 17 eye make up kit as well which came with white, blue, purple and black eyeshadows, so I was happy.
The packaging for this mascara is black with purple and white circles - very glam. On removing the mascara wand I saw that it was quite thick.
Applying the mascara to my eyelashes, I found that it went on very well and it was easy to cover all my lashes thoroughly. As the mascara was blue, and my eyelashes are short and pale, I found I needed two coats to make them stand out, but once I had done this I was impressed. I almost looked as if I was wearing false lashes (I'm glad about the 'almost' - I don't want to look fake!). My eyelashes looked longer, thicker and generally more plentiful.
I found the mascara to last all day, although I would apply another coat at night. This is comparable to other mascaras I have tried. It comes off reasonably well with eye makeup remover, which again is similar to other mascaras.
I would definitely recommend this mascara, it works really well and comes at a great price. Give the Aqua shade a go if you're feeling brave! I often wear it with a line of Collection 2000 Sparkle Eyeliner (the gold shade) for a striking look.
Va va voom mascara
Needing a new mascara, and with a special introductory offer on this one, as well as an eye shadow palette, I deceide to give it a whirl.
This is described as the mascara which is going to give me flirty, fabulous lashes so that's a bit fantastic, and rather like the marketing of most other mascaras.
PRODUCT AND PACKAGING...
The mascara is fairly eye catching and not at all subtle with its purple and black design interspersed with stars and circles. When I unscrew the top, the brush does as promised have oversized bristles and the brush itself is bigger than I would normally expect. This big wand is apparently what I need to create big, dramatic lashes in one easy sweep, and the expected unique ingredient means that I can apply as many coats of the stuff as I want without my lashes getting clumpy.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY...
Available online at www.boots.com and instore with a RRP of £5.86
FOR MORE IDEAS...
Go onto the va va voom page and get lots of ideas from a make up artist for experimenting with different types of "looks", including evenly coated lashes (i thought they should always be evenly coated), luscious thickness and length.
I can't remember ever having bought a No 17 mascara before, and I was impressed with this one. The nice big wand makes it quick and easy to apply. One coat seems to give lightish coverage but a second coat makes lashes look long and thick. It is a waterproof mascara and as such can be quite tricky to fully remove- I tend to find that a cream eye make up remover works best.
I have had this about a month now and with daily use, it still applies evenly and smoothly and gives good coverage. I like the fact that one coat just gives a blackening effect and a second coat gives a more pronounced evening look.
I would recommend this mascara- budget priced easy to apply and effective.
Thanks for reading.
