~A useful base coat from No7~
Amongst the No7 products I have bought and used is the clear base coat which I have found to be of a good quality. I have very often bought the product when Boots have had their £5 or £3 off No7 vouchers which makes the product far more affordable in my opinion. I would say that the clear coat is very easy to apply to my nails when I use it, except when the base coat bottle is nearly empty, as the remaining clear coat can often end up becoming a little too thick and gloopy over time. Other than that I haven't really ever had much of a problem when using the product and it has done what it should have, which I have been pleased about.
~Ease of use/ product presentation~
I find that the smooth clear glass product bottles tend to be well shaped and easy to handle when applying the product to the nails. The bottle lids are made from a smooth black plastic material which is durable and once again easy to handle when I use the built in applicator brush to apply some of the base coat to my nails. The lid is easy to twist open and close and it most often provides a nice tight seal which keeps the contents of the bottle fresh and ready for use. From time to time I find that I need to wipe the top of the bottle opening in order to remove any old or dried on polish that has built up, so as to ensure that the lid closes well and gets a good seal.
The applicator brushes that come built into the bottle lids of these base coats are of a fair quality in my opinion and I find that in most cases I can easily apply a nice light and even coating of the product to my nails with no fuss or bother what so ever. Over time I find that if I haven't placed the brush back into the bottle with care the brush tip can sometimes become misshapen although that doesn't tend to happen very often. This can effect the usefulness of the applicator brush. When applying the base coat I find that it takes very little time to apply a single coat of the product to each of my nails and then allow it to set fully.
~Applying the base coat~
I find that the first coat of this nail care product goes on very well in most cases and sets quite quickly. When I apply a second coat if I am applying a darker, bolder or brighter nail colour over the top I find that the second coat can take a little longer to dry completely. I like to make sure that both coast have fully dried before I apply anything over the top as this technique always gives the best results. Once my nails are dry I can apply a nail colour of my choosing over the top of the base coat to give a nice even and smooth looking result 99% of the time.
The idea of the product is that it improves the wear time and look of any coloured nail polish that is applied over the top of the clear coat and I generally find this to be the case. I wouldn't say that the clear base cost is overly long lasting if you apply too many thick layers of polish over the top though, so I prefer to use thinner more precise layers of polish if I can. The base coat helps prevent staining to my nails when I apply dark, bold or highly coloured nail polish products to my nails and helps to avoid that nasty yellow tinge that can effect the nails after having worn a bold red polish for instance.
I am not really certain that using this product has prevented my nails from splitting and chipping, which is something that it claims to be able to prevent. I still find that from time to time my nails can split or chip when using the base coat. As someone who previously wore acrylic nails I would say that having done so in the past my natural nails now tend to split or chip more than they might have done previously, which may be an issue which the base coat cannot really help with. Over all I feel that the base coat works well when used as a base over which I can apply brighter bolder nail colours, as it prevents staining to my nails and gives a longer lasting finish.
~Price/ product rating~
The price of a small bottle of base coat is generally around £6 which I feel is reasonable value for a good quality base coat, although I mush prefer buying this product when there is a money saving voucher as this really reduces the price considerably. The only slight down side of any note is that over time the clear polish can become a little gloopy and harder to apply in a nice light smooth layer. This is something that I find happens to all nail products of this type over time, so I don't feel this is a particular issue with this brand of base coat. My product rating for this base coat is 4 stars.
No 7 is one of those brands that I sometimes forget about, especially for nail polishes. However, due to wearing either bright or dark colours on my nails quite a lot, I thought it was about time I got a good base coat polish to stop the colours staining my nails. I bought Boots No7 Smooth Base Coat from my local Boots store for £5.50 but you can also use 550 Boots points to buy this product as well.
The clear nail polish comes in a small glass bottle which holds 10ml of nail polish. The lid screws off to show the little brush which you then use for applying the polish to your nails. For some reason, I quite like the No 7 nail polish bottles even though they are quite plain and not much different to any other brands.
The nail polish is easy to apply and you can either use this on its own or then paint another colour on top of it. The brush is thick enough so that it only takes two or three coats to cover your whole nail. The smell of the polish is the same as any other, with a slight chemical smell to it but it isn't that bad at all and it isn't overpowering. The polish does dry quite quickly compared with other nail polishes I have bought in the past and I have found that my whole nail is dry in only a couple of minutes.
What I like about this base coat is that while it looks nice on its own, it is also good for other things. If you are using this as a base coat to another colour, it gives your nails a smooth finish which makes it easier and smoother to apply the other colour. I actually think that applying nail polish is a lot easier once you have a base coat in place compared with not having one at all.
Removing the nail polish is quite easy too. Sometimes when using dark colours, it takes me ages to get rid of all of the colour but when using this base coat, I find that there is no scrubbing needed. The dark colour on top comes off easily and my nails look perfectly clean afterwards, which is the benefit of using a base coat.
I really like this base coat and I would definitely buy it again, as well as some other No 7 nail polishes.
I have a huge collection of No7 Nail polishes in my collection thanks in the main to Boots who quite often run promotions and special offers on them. I am now a huge fan of the range due to the general quality of them and the colour range offered.
One of the products I use the most often though is this one and I have owned this for absolutely ages now. I always use a base coat to protect my nail before I apply nail polish to help give a smooth look, to stop staining and to even help colour stay on longer. As a beauty therapist I have seen people with stained nails that are horrid and I don't ever want my nails to look like that I can tell you!
What you basically get for £5.50 is a 10ml glass jar which is see through with a twist on/off cap to the top of it which holds the brush you apply the liquid with. On the front of it we are simply told what it is and who it is by, the size is stated on the back as are the contact details for Boots. Its a simple and good quality looking product this one.
Well it is a clear nail product that you apply onto clear nails. I have worn this on its own or painted over the top of it with my chosen colour because it is clear it is very easy to apply. It smells like normal polish does, its runny and rather sticky, again like most nail polishes are really and it dries to a gentle but natural shine in about two minutes, leaving the nail looking clean and smooth, freshened up and ready to coat however many coats of nail polishes over the top you want to! This is meant to strengthen the nails and I can't really say alot about that as I'm not really sure if its helped mine or not really to be fair!
All In All:
This creates a smooth nail to polish over and work with and I find that this even protects my nail polishes from staining my nails even when wearing very, very dark colours and for days at a time! It gives me a smooth base to work with and is fuss free to apply, its easy enough to remove with nail polish remover of course being clear and like I have stated earlier I have worn this on my nails just to feel something are on them and they've looked really clean and healthy!
A bottle of this has lasted me absolutely ages and for me this is a must have product that is worth every penny that it costs!

I buy lots of products from the No7 range from boots because I usually buy them when I have a £5 voucher off the usual price. Buying them with a voucher saves me lots of money and a way to be able to buy products I haven't bought before and would like to buy and give a go. This is one I didn't however buy using a voucher.
It comes in a glass bottle and it has a really nice sized wand, the brush at the end of the wand has quite wide bristles and they are really soft bristles and a good length compared to some other brands. It is a clear colour and the top is easy to twist on and off.
It is a base coat to use before applying your favourite nail polish. It is easy to apply and it just brushes on really well because the brush is really soft. the bristles reach all around the nail area too and just glides over the nails perfectly.
It doesn't take long for it to dry on the nails and only takes a couple of minutes or so. I always like to wait for at least 10 minutes before I apply any coat of nail polish over the top of it, just to make sure it doesn't smudge it or disturb it. Once it has fully dried after this time lapse, the nail polish glides over the top really well. The product gives the nails a good base coat so that the nail polish lasts a lot longer on the nails and also helps it not to chip as often. I find it works well for not chipping the polish and it gives a really nice look when first applied, it looks glossy and has a really good shine to it.
Many moons ago, I never used to use a base coat when wearing nail polish and I always wondered why it chipped quite a lot when I had paid a lot of money for the polish. When a shop assistant once told me it was because I hadn't used a base coat first before applying the polish I then began to buy it and I was very surprised how right she had been and I wished I had used one way before the time I had bought one.
It gives a perfect base for my nails and it helps any colour not to stain the nails too, when I use a black nail polish, this one helps the polish not to stain them and once I have removed the black from my nails, there is no show of any staining which is brilliant because there is nothing worse than stained nails in my opinion, especially a black colour.
It doesn't feel rough on the nails once dried and just feels really soft and smooth, it doesn't clump or have a tacky feeling on the nails, which is good because you can then just apply the polish over the top.
It also helps to strengthen nails and helps with splitting too, I have found my nails don't split as much when I coat them with this product. Also helps condition them a little bit more.
I am pleased with the way this product works for the look of my nail polish, it gives a really good base and is a really good quality and cheap enough to buy. I only paid £5.50 for a 10ml bottle. It lasts for quite some time with regular usage and a little goes a very long way.
I highly do recommend this one for anyone looking for a good quality base coat to help your nails look a lot more smarter and to help condition them at the same time and help them from chipping etc and help the polish stay in place for a whole lot longer.
I will buy this one again in the future because it has helped my nails look really nice when used with my favourite colours and I can use a darker or brighter colour too.
It is really affordable and cheap enough to buy for any budget in my opinion and well worth giving it a go and if you want to save a little bit more money and swap brands, this one I think you would find works really well.
I give this one 5 stars.

Thank you for reading my review and I hope it has been of some help.
~So Smooth Nail Base Coat~
No7 have recently updated their make up range so this product is now in different packaging from the above picture.
This nail base coat is designed to be applied to your nails before applying a coloured nail polish. When applied to bare nails, it should help to improve the condition of your nails and prevent them from splitting.
This nail base is presented in a small glass bottle which features a screw top lid. There is a small brush attatched to the inside of the wand and the application method is the same as applying a nail polish.
~Price and Availability~
A 10ml bottle of nail base is available from Boots and www.boots.com. Expect to pay £5.50 for a 10ml bottle. A top coat is also available.
I am a fan of No7 products and buy when they are on offer at '3 for 2' or with discount vouchers. I previously used this product in the old design packaging and managed to lose my bottle. When I came to repurchase, the design had changed but the product remains the same. I like to keep my nails in great condition but they are prone to splitting. I wear nail polish regularly and normally opt for dark blues, purples and blacks so in my opinion, a nail base coat is an essential beauty purchase.
The bottle is a good size and lasts for ages. The base coat is quite thin in consistency, clear and with a typical nail polish smell. The brush is a good size and soft. Only a small amount of the liquid is needed to effectively coat each nail. I use this on my fingernails and my toenails. The surface of my fingernails often feels quite rough and this often causes any nail colour to look rather silly and uneven.
The liquid base coat spreads well and only one sweep of each nail is needed due to the wide spreading bristles of the brush. The base coat goes on clear and very smooth. Once applied, the base coat starts to dry quickly but I normally leave a good 15minutes between applying this and applying any nail colour. This base coat leaves my nails with a slight shine and dries clear. My nails look to be in a healthy condition and the surface of my fingernails becomes more even and very smooth. This base coat does a good job at conditioning my nails somewhat and I am able to notice a difference in the quality of my nails. They don't split or dry out like before. When I don't use this, I notice a big difference in how my nails look and feel so it is definitely worth taking some time out to apply it.
Not only does the base coat condition my nails, it also works well to protect my nails from staining caused by nail colours. As I said, I prefer dark colours and without the base coat underneath, my nails stain quite badly and look very unattractive. The base note provides a smooth, even base for my nail colour so application is a breeze. I notice less frequent chipping and once I remove the nail colour and base coat with some nail polish remover, my nails end up clean and stain free.
£5.50 is a fair price to pay for nail protection and I can highly recommend this base coat. It is a quality product which works effectively at keeping my nails in tip top condition. It lasts well too. I use it once a week either alone or under a nail colour and find that it keeps my nails looking good for the rest of the week.
Thanks for reading :)
Over the years I have accumulated quite a ridiculous amount of nail polishes, which I would estimate to be around 50 or so bottles; the majority of which are half used. Whilst I don't paint my nails as often as I'd like due to lack of time, on those occasions that I have a spare half an hour I favour using vivid colours, particularly reds, purples and black. Unfortunately, my experience with using dark colours in the past caused considerable discolouration to my nails, so I now always ensure that I use a base coat. Whilst I own a good few brands of polishes, the only base coat that I've ever used is Boots No 7 So Smooth and despite owning my current bottle for at least three years, it still enables me to achieve perfect results.
The glass bottle is fairly eye-catching with its sleek contemporary design and it holds 10 ml of base coat, which initially offers a creamy coloured appearance. Despite my bottle being fairly old, it has served me well and still contains approximately 5 ml of polish, which is pretty good going considering how long ago I made my purchase. I generally prefer square shaped lids, which are easier to turn than those that are cylindrical, particularly after the polish has been opened several times. Boots have opted for an oval shaped lid and despite the slight crunching sound of dried product, which has lodged underneath, I am able to obtain a comfortable grip and turn with great ease. Although I have owned my bottle for a few years, I would advise that the design of the current bottles is identical to the one that I own.
A point I favour with Boots No 7 nail products is that they offer a good size brush as opposed to the stubby ones that I've noticed with a few other brands. As a consequence, I am able to achieve an effortless application and one dip of the brush into the base coat easily and fully coats three of my finger nails without catching the skin. Despite the creamy coloured appearance of the base coat in the bottle, it is almost transparent when applied to the nail. I must admit that I am surprised that my bottle continues to offer the same consistency as when I first made my purchase, as more often than not, used polishes tend to thicken after approximately twelve months rendering them useless. The base coat emits the same pear drop aroma as with any other nail polish and I've yet to find a brand that doesn't offer the familiar strong odour.
The base coat offers a smooth surface and is fast drying with my nails being touch dry within just a couple of minutes. In addition to preventing discolouration of the nails, the base coat assists in preventing breaks and splitting and offers a smooth base for my nail polish, which easily glides over the top. In my experience, using this base coat also helps to prolong the well manicured appearance of my nail polish. It is easily removed by way of an ordinary nail varnish remover and despite me frequently sporting bright colours my bare nails are left looking healthy without any staining.
As with all of the products in the No 7 range, So Smooth Base Coat is a little expensive with its price of £5.50 per bottle although Boots frequently run promotions. At the time of writing, if you make one purchase from the range you will receive the second one for half price, so it is on these occasions that I will stock up on some of my favourite products. Provided the polish doesn't thicken or become dry, I anticipate I will achieve a good few more years out of the bottle, which makes my purchase excellent value for money.
Due to the reasons discussed above, I feel a five star rating is appropriate together with my recommendation.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
I'm quite a fan of the No7 nail varnishes but don't like the hefty £7 price tag that they come with. I always wait for the No7 vouchers that entitle you to £5 off their cosmetics before I buy them, which I know is a bit cheap of me, but hey, we're in a recession.
This paticular nailvarnish is only £5.50 because, I think, it has no colour and is meant to be used as a base coat. This meant with my voucher, I got it for just 50p which I think is a much more reasonable price to pay for nailvarnish!
The nailvarnish comes in a clear bottle with a white lid. It's got the No7 logo on it in small gold letters and looks quite classy really. The nailvarnish itself is completely clear and is of a nice consistency, not too thick or too runny. The bottle states that the nail varnish will protect your nails to prevent splitting and damage and should give you better results when using it as base coat under another colour.
I don't usually see the point in products like this. I rarely use a topcoat, never mind a base coat, but my nails aren't in great condition so my colours haven't been going on very well lately. I tend to have to put two or three coats of coloured nailvarnish just to get a smooth result so I thought I might as well try a base coat to see if it helped.
The nailvarnish is so easy to apply. Like the other No7 nailvarnishes I have used, the brush is soft and goes easily over your nail and the lid isn't too small so it is easy to hold and apply. Because it's clear, you don't have to worry about putting it on really tidy but it went on smoothly and dried really quickly. It dried within about a minute or so and nails felt much smoother. When it came to applying a nailvarnish on top, it went on easier as my nails were smoother and looked better when dry as the small cracks and bumps on my nails weren't visible. It's just a shame I've bitten them off again so they're really short again!
I was quite suprised by how effective this nail varnish was. I've used lots of products promising to improve nail quality that haven't worked but this actually did. I didn't notice any improvement to my nail quality after removing the polish, but while it's on it makes my nailvarnish go on much easier and look a lot better.
Overall, this is a good nailvarnish and well worth the money. It made my nails look so much better with a smooth coat of nailvarnish on. It's well worth the money, the £5.50 or the 50p but I'd wait for vouchers so you can grab a bargain! :)
A few months ago my mother gave me a Boots No7 voucher to use as she didn't need anything and thought I'd get much more use from it. In fact I never have a problem finding items to buy with a rather lovely £5 off from No7. However, I was specifically in need of a base and top coat for my nails as my previous ones were running short and I decided to buy both from No7 and take full advantage of my voucher.
Boots No7 Smooth Base Coat is just part of the nail varnish collection and managed to stay in the No7 range when No7 recently went through a whole rebranding update. No7 if you haven't heard is Boots own range of make up, cosmetics and toiletries. They have generally a decent price range which although isn't the cheapest on the market it is certainly not the most expensive either making it affordable to most.
What is it?
No7 Smooth Nail Base Coat is pretty much what it says on the bottle! It is a clear nail varnish which goes on your nail as the first coat before you apply any colour. No7 state that it helps protect your nails, basically to help stop them splitting and hopefully leaving you with a stronger nail overall.
Just like all the other No7 nail varnishes the base coat comes in exactly the same bottle and if not careful you could mistake it simply for a clear polish. The bottle is made of clear glass and comes complete with a black plastic top which features in gold the No7 logo. Around the bottle there is the product name which is again in gold font and not overly visible. The applicator brush just like most other nail varnishes is attached to the screw on top.
Not everyone uses a base coat, a lot don't see the point. However, I do every time I apply a nail varnish whether it is a dark or light colour. I do find a base coat protects the nail and of course helps prevent staining from dark colours. Let's face it no one wants the yellowing of the nails to happen if you use coloured nail varnish frequently. Hence, my use of a base coat!
The No7 base coat as I said above looks just like any other clear varnish and has exactly the same consistency as any other No7 varnish which if you have never used one isn't too runny which is ideal to apply as it doesn't run and can be easily brushed on without having too much excess on the applicator brush. It does have a mild nail varnish smell but nothing potent.
I found that the base coat dries within a matter of seconds. You only need to apply one even coat and it dries evenly and does give a smooth finish to the nail. I was incredibly surprised as to how quick it dried which makes the job of doing your nails a lot easier! I have been using this base coat for a few months now and I have found that it really does protect the nail from any colour staining and my nails do seem a little stronger since using it.
When it comes to removing the polish I do find it easier to remove a coloured polish when using a base coat and I have found that there is no staining to the nail whatsoever which is obviously a good thing. And definitely no yellowing to the nail either!
The No7 Smooth Nail Base Coat was definitely a good buy and it does exactly what it claims. It looks after your nails and doesn't let a coloured nail varnish stain the nail. Incredibly quick to dry and easy to remove. I definitely have no complaints whatsoever. A big 5 stars from me!
I am a big fan a painted toe nails and tend to use Boots No 7 Damson Dream which is a nice deep red/brown colour. The problem is, when I try to remove, I find it really difficult to do so and because I always wear nail varnish, my nails look quite a funny colour. When I wrote my review on this product, I received a comment that I should use base coat which would help with these issues so the following weekend, I went to Boots to see what was available.
The Base Coat retails for 7, however at the time of writing, it is currently half price at £3.50 (it looks like they are re-designing the brand logo as loads of their products are currently half price and when I went into Boots yesterday, it said something along the lines of 'exciting new range coming soon'). As part of the No 7 range, it is exclusive to Boots, in store and online but also available on places like EBay.
Application is really easy; the brush is quite wide, wide enough to be able to cover my toe nails in one sweep (except my big toe!).To apply, it is just like applying nail varnish and give my nails I nice shine, once dried, just apply your chosen nail varnish as normal.
I found that it did even out any groves or bumps on my toe nails, I although the nail varnish on my toes nails didn't tend to chip much any way, I definitely noticed a difference recently when we were on holiday, normally, after a day on the beach, my nail varnish does tend to get scratched and chip more than normal, I found that I this only happened after a couple of days when I had applied the base coat.
The base coat contains Calcium Panthothenate, Nonychosine and D-Panthenolto, apparently, this is meant to help strengthen your nails and prevent splitting or breaking, I cannot really comment if this works as I have never used on my finger nails which would be the real test.
Overall, I would recommend this as my nail varnish was easier to remove, my nails weren't as stained and it did pro-long the time between touch-up/re-applying however I do think that the RRP is a little steep for a base coat which is why I would only give 4 out of 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
