Boots No7 Shine Free Make up Base
Advantages: Hard to say what the advantages are, works for some people but not for everyone.
Disadvantages: Has to be mixed with moisturiser or applied after moisturising, defeats the whole point of "matte"
I have a great interest and passion when it comes to make up and enjoy experimenting with different looks and I often enjoy spending a lot of time using my make up so it becomes frustrating and disappointing when I find myself having to re-apply my make up due to my oily skin. Admittedly when I first purchased no7's shine free make up base a couple of years ago; my skin was significantly oilier than it is this current day but I still have issues with greasy and shiny skin that makes me look grim by the end of the day.
I am a full time art student and I do not find the time during my working hours to sit and re-do my make up and even if I did find the time to do so - I'd rather not, as it just feels caked on after re-doing it and I feel that I shouldn't have to if I'm paying good money for my products. So for a while this make up base saved me having to re apply everything, although for me personally the results weren't so astounding but it extended my make-ups life span for a couple more hours than previously.
The product is a creamy white consistency that takes a couple of attempts to blend correctly into the skin - if not done adequately a visible white residue will be visible on the skin and look uneven even after applying foundation thereafter. It is advisable that you apply this with a sponge or brush for a more even complexion; much alike when you apply your foundation, of course you can apply traditionally with your hands.
Once the product is applied you can instantly feel the matte-effect as it gives your skin a distinctly different feel and texture than it would from just your foundation being applied alone. However it does say on the packaging "Moisturise before applying. Smooth on alone or under foundation for satiny soft, shine free skin." So for a more silky feel and a less restricting feeling you have to pre moisturise. This isn't an issue for those who moisturise before applying make up as part of their daily routine, but for those who are solely buying this product to reduce the shiny and oily appearance of their skin and therefore avoid using moisturisers, it pretty much renders it a bit pointless as a product on it's own.
I haven't used the primer every day and I've found that it's rather temperamental with me and personally I prefer other brands that aren't as extortionate in price. This particular make up base varies around £11 and available anywhere that specialize in the no 7 range, particularly in boots where you can often receive money off vouchers for them when you spend a certain amount in store. I have opted for a more transparent and moist primer by MUA that is less than half the price of this one and does the job a million times better than this particular one.
I have often found that no7's products are of great high quality despite the budget breaking prices, however I feel that this particular primer lets them down as it just doesn't do the trick particularly well and can be out done by a number of other products and because of this I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as there are better options.
Summary: With much better options available for a cut of the price of this one, I wouldn't opt for this one.
