Being a lover of makeup and always looking for new things to test, I bought this mascara - Talons Aiguilles by Bourjois. I always like to have at least a couple of dark mascaras for dramatic effect and a couple of less heavier colours for a more natural effect. Sometimes it's nice not to feel like I'm wearing too much makeup, but still look smart and presentable, and I find mascaras can do this quite well if I go for a brown/black shade.
On this particular shopping trip, I was on the lookout for the latter and of course the mascara had to be waterproof, smudge-proof and not clumpy! Talons Aiguilles comes in a curved tube which is quite eye-catching and much easier to hold compared to the usual mascara tubes which are a basic cylinder. Across the tube, the words 'Talons Aiguilles' are splashed in funky lettering and overall on first impressions it looks like a good quality and promising product. I decided on the brown shade, which isn't the typical dull looking brown, but was somewhat shimmery and bronze-like - but not overly, it was very subtle. The shade is also complimented by the tube packaging which is in the same colour.
As far as I'm aware you can buy these from Boots and Superdrug, however I haven't been able to find them listed on their websites. I bought mine from an independent cosmetics website for around 4 pounds at discount price, but usual prices are around 7 pounds. The mascara also comes in other shades, another brown which is lighter than the one I'm reviewing and a plum colour. I'm not sure if there are other shades in the range.
Upon opening the tube, it is fairly easy for application and the lid twists off as with any other mascara wand. The wand is fairly long and tapers off into a point which I like because it seems to apply with more precision. The wand bristles are coated evenly in mascara and the shade is a very dark bronze-brown with a slight shimmer... almost identical to the outer packaging that it's contained in! One thing that did put me off a bit was that the actual mascara looked like it was made of very thin fibres... I don't know what this was, but it applied well and I'm assuming it is just the texture.
Applying to the eyelashes is easy and as I mentioned above, the tapered wand definitely makes the application process easier and separates the lashes well. I wouldn't say this is the kind of mascara if you want volume and that 'va-va-voom' effect. It gives a very natural look... sometimes so natural it doesn't look like I've even applied anything, so 2 coats are needed. The subtle shimmer of colour is very nice though - and! - it is amazingly waterproof! It doesn't budge a millimetre! I have rubbed my eyes a few times forgetting that I'm wearing it and it doesn't smudge or run or crumble off at all.
This is an ideal mascara for the natural look, definitely. If you're after something a bit more out there I don't think this would quite hack it in all fairness. You could still use it but maybe apply a volumising mascara underneath and then a coat of this on top.
All in all I'm fairly happy with it - it's waterproof, lasts all day, the colour is subtle and gives a very natural look. The wand is also a good shape, and I think because of it you're less likely to drop it. My only little niggle is that I have to apply two coats so that it looks like I have actually applied it!
