Foundation is one of those things I find really tricky to buy, and it can be an expensive mistake. So when I spotted an offer from Avon it seemed like as good a time as any to experiment. For a bargainous £6 (usual price £10.50), I thought this 'Calming Effects' might be ideal for my slightly sensitive and still occasionally spot-prone complexion.
What impressed me most in the description was the inclusion of lavender oil - I'm a big fan of aromatherapy - and if nothing else thought it would improve the scent of the foundation. No, not really! Still, lavender is excellent for burns and such, so it should in theory soothe the red and/or spotty bits of my skin, right?
Wrong! Here's the kicker: adding *oil* (even lavender oil) to a product is going to make it - any guesses? - yup, oily! Add to oily-ish skin and you can see the disaster coming! I cannot wear this at all without having a bit of a break out :(
Which nullifies the product for me anyway, but to be honest I wasn't that impressed with the coverage even before the spots arrived! It's a very thin (or 'light', if you prefer) product, so unless you do have pretty flawless skin already then the amount you need to cover even small imperfections is too much for any hope of skin breathing, I reckon - I found I needed around three 'pumps' from the bottle to approach a decent coverage.
I notice that the description on the Avon website doesn't talk about spots at all, although it describes this as 'gentle' and 'refreshing the appearance of stressed skin'. Sadly, it did more to stress my skin than it was in the first place! Others do seem to get on with this (from the website comments) but for me it was too much for my slightly oily t-zone, made my flakier patches look dreadful, and brought me out in spots on my usually 'normal' bits - so I have no clue who this is going to work for. On the bright side, the colour - 'ivory' for my pasty Scottishness! - was quite good; that's not enough to overcome those negatives, alas!
Overall, then: thanks, but absolutely no thanks!
I wear makeup every day and was searching for a foundation to give me a dewy, fresh look. I was looking on the Avon website and thought this would be a good choice due to its 'illumining effect'. I ordered it in ivory as this is suitable for my skin tone and have to say I'm impressed. The foundation has a nice creamy consistency and doesn't leave you looking like you're caked in foundation. It is refreshing on the face and calmed any red areas but left me with a glow, kind of what you would expect to see on a bride. I use a foundation brush to apply and find it blends really well into the skin and doesn't leave any tide marks around the jaw area. I would say to get the maximum dewy look I wouldn't apply powder over the top as this takes some of the 'glow' away. It works really well with a cream blusher and gives a good natural look. Over all I would say it is a top buy for everyday makeup wearers and a fraction of the price of some highend brands.
I don't often wear foundation every day; I wear it for nights out and special occasions but tend to find that having it on every day, my skin feels weighed down and heavy. I also don't like the feeling that I am wearing a mask either.
I bought this not really understanding the calming effect tag, how can a foundation be calming? To be honest I am still none the wiser but I did enjoy using the product. The bottle was easy enough to use although I must admit I do not like pump action bottles. The spout tends to get gunked up and can become a real mess if you don't keep it clean. I also find that you can't really judge how much will come out with each spurt; even trying to press it gently doesn't work. This can lead to wastage which isn't a positive note.
The colours are ok and having fair skin, I bought the light shade which does match my skin tone relatively well. I tend to use a brush to apply my foundation and found this easy with this; it went on smoothly, doesn't leave brush strokes and does cover a multitude of sins. By sins, I mean red marks, dark circles etc. It gives a smooth constant finish which is great, I paid £4 from eBay for this and intend to purchase more as I really like this foundation. It doesn't have a horrible smell like some and overall I have really warmed to it. Maybe this is the calming effect it talks about?
I bought a small 7.5ml sample tube of this foundation. It was only £1.25 and it lasted me for five days.
I purchased the Ivory shade which is the lightest shade, ideal for my pale skin. The foundation is a beige colour and it's quite thick and creamy in consistency. It doesn't really smell of anything, just a faint "make-up" smell, if that makes sense! The foundation can be applied with a brush or just by using your fingertips.
I applied the foundation with a brush and worked it into my face. The foundation was easy to apply and it was easy to distribute onto my skin. It looked nice and it was easy to wear. I used the foundation without a primer and I noticed that by midday it was starting to flake a little bit. However, when I did use it with a primer I got much better results. The foundation lasted a lot longer and it didn't flake, so I would advise you to use a primer first and then use this.
The foundation managed to cover my spots and blemishes, which were mostly around my chin area. Overall it was good quality and it didn't irritate my skin in any way, so it is quite calming. This is perhaps down to the calming properties of Lavender and Aloe Vera that it is made with.
I would recommend this foundation. I just prefer mineral foundations now as I think they're easier to use.
Priced at £10.50 per 30ml bottle. Five shades to choose from.
Usually for my foundation I stick to brands and products that I know as if you find the right one for you, then it is best to stick to it. However, as one of my friends has recently become an Avon rep I decided to buy some products off her. Originally I purchased a very small tube of this product as a trial size which only cost a pound so I figured it was worth a shot. After trying the product I loved it and when next order date came round I purchased a full 30 ml bottle size for about ten pounds which is the same price I usually pay in the shops for my foundation. Anywhere below this price and the product doesn't usually perform for me.
A 30ml bottle for me lasts a good couple of months as I don't use very much foundation although I wear it daily. I only use a very small amount for light coverage. When using this product I found the the liquid was soft and covered my skin evenly. The product is also good at covering up blemishes and illuminating the skin. My skin looks more refreshed from using this product and I would certainly recommend it for others.
The problem with this liquid sort of foundation which is operated by a pump style top is that you can end up with wastage at the end as it won't come out through the tube inside. The top of the bottle can also become quite dirty where the foundation comes out so it needs to be cleaned regularly.
What I like about the product is that it is not overly obvious I am wearing foundation as the coverage is flawless and evens out my skin tone. The product is also long lasting and usually is on for about 8 hours before it starts to wear off. There are products on the market at the moment however that last longer.
