Advantages: Versatile, cheap, effective

Disadvantages: Unusual smell and taste

Carmex is truly an essential product for anyone who has ever experienced dry and chapped lips and even for those merely after smooth, luscious looking lips. Many refer to the product as a lip balm, a beauty product but I tend to think of it more as a medical necessity.

This is perhaps to do with the retro packaging. Carmex products have unfussy and understated packaging, a refreshing change from the screaming, in your face tactics employed by most other cosmetics. This gives carmex a simplicity that demands trust. The lack of gimmicks gives an honest air that evokes confidence, it shows the product inside is so great it needs no great advertising. Combined with the money back guarantee if chapped lips are not healed great confidence can be inspired merely by glancing at the product on the shelf.

When applied this confidence is converted to pure devotion. Its true that carmex looks and smells a little peculiar. Its translucent with a yellow tinge but when applied looks clear so this is no issue. Also the smell has been described to me as ‘minty plasticine’ and along witht the accompanying taste is one of the slight drawbacks of carmex.

However this small quibble is much outweighed by the way carmex feels on your lips. Within seconds of application a pleasant tingling sensation spreads over the entire lip area. This is encouraging as it feels like its having an effect. I guess many would claim that this is merely for a placebo effect but the result of using carmex for me has always been soft, smooth lips.

Carmex is a fairly long lasting lip balm and usually endures at least an hour for a noticeable presence on the lips, although the effect lasts a lot longer with lips staying silky soft for hours. The tingling sensation due to blood rushing to the area also means that lips take on a darker hue and plump up slightly. This is what makes carmex such a superior product. Its competitor Vaseline lacks he methanol which makes carmex so amazing and unique.

At £2.49 from Boots carmex is very reasonable and a tube lasts me for about four months. Its versatility also means it is well worth its price. It can be used to treat cold sores, fever and blisters as well as being great for taming unruly eyebrows and as an emergency highlighter for the cheekbones. Out all of the types of carmex I find the tube to be the best because it is easiest to apply as you can control how much you use and can apply it straight to the lips. However at such a good price it would be justifiable to buy all three.

Summary: A true hero that will always save chapped lips, restoring their beauty
