Advantages: Waterproof, nice shades.

Disadvantages: Dries quickly, crumbles into eyes. Expensive.

A friend gave me this mascara after acccidently purchasing the wrong colour. She wanted black but had got a brown shade - since I'm blue eyed with fair shades in my hair I thought it would suit me. This is the first mascara by Chanel I've ever tried. My most recent personal purchases of mascara have been Max Factor and Avon, both of which I am pleased with.

This Chanel waterproof mascara comes in a chic black case with a square design and a gold strip just under the wand. The top of the wand is stamped with the Chanel logo. The bottom of the tube shows product shade and information: ie. weight is 5g; product will stay fresh for six months. The applicator handle is just over and inch and a half long and feels easy to grip. The top screws out easily. The brush stem is close to seven and a half cm long with the brush measuring just over an inch. The wand itself is very flexible and seems to be made of a rubbery material which bends and moves very easily. The brush is formed from little pointy tentacles of rubber which taper away at the end of the brush head. I find the size and shape of the brush effective to give full and quick coverage my lashes.

I have the shade 20 or 'Noir Brun' (Brown Black) which is a chocolate shade. It is actually similar to the colour of chocolate spread like nutella! The mascara smells sharp and a little bit perfumed although it is a crisp, clean aroma which is pleasant.

When I first used the mascara I was pleased with how the colour looked on my lashes. I was worried it would be a little light for me, but in actual fact it can barely be distinguished from a black colour mascara. I did find that the mascara tends to be a little clumpy and sticky on my lashes - forming lumps and bumps which then crumble off and fall into my eyes. This is a big problem for me with this mascara and tends to happen mostly on application and just after application. I think it may be the fact that the mascara is waterproof that this problem occurs - the mascara seems to be quite thick and waxy and a lot drier than I would like. It seems to dry too quickly, almost before you are able to comb it onto your lashes!

This mascara stays the course in wet weather. I have never gone swimming in it though. I am pleased with the colour and durability but not with the application or the comfort factor.

At around £19 a tube this is an expensive make-up item that you may not want to risk buying, in particular if you are a contact lense wearer like me.

Summary: An expensive waterproof mascara from Chanel.
