We all adore Dior but not so much the price tags! That's why I only rarely glance at the counter when shopping. On a recent retail therapy session I happened to turn into magpie mode and spot this shiny compact!
On first inspection I wasn't so sure what in fact it was *blonde moment* but a closer look and a skim read of the box enlightened me to the concept - it is a primer and a shine control all rolled into one. I have tried many primers (and reviewed them) but found this one to look and feel much different as it's a one of a kind product being a transparent balm that glides over your skin to act as a primer before foundation, or you can apply after to add a healthy glow to the skin and reduce shine.
It may be silly but I always check out the packaging and design before deciding to buy - some people do not care and will buy even if it was encased in a loo roll! But with this product it is sure to make a statement in your collection. It comes in an optional black velvet suede pocket to keep it clean and free from scratches when in your bag, once you take the compact out - pop your sunglasses on 'cause it's a dazzler! Made from a gorgeous, gleaming sort of stainless steel (I imagine) however I would like to think of it as Silver or White Gold to justify paying the high end price! The design is very minimalistic with just a faint print of the brand 'Dior' emblazoned on the top. I absolutely love the way it looks as its stylish, sophisticated and snazzy - a real treat for your make up bag! Once you open up the sturdy clasp, (another aspect I love about the blueprint - its built to last!) the fun and games really begin. One the top half and the inside of the lid is a mirror - something every compact should have as it is highly useful and practical. The bottom half is divided into two - one part containing the product and in the other, the soft square sponge.
The product itself looks like a clear lipbalm - very waxy with cloudy clear colouring. If you swirl your finger over the primer, it feels very velvety and silky but not in a liquid form like a cream. I have found the best way to apply it is with the sponge provided - but don't worry if you have heard that you shouldn't use sponges as the absorb half of your product, the consistency of the Dior primer is resilient and durable enough to be applied with a sponge. There are two ways to wear it. One is under your foundation as a primer. I like to start off with a clean and moisturised complexion and run the sponge through the product to pick up enough to cover my T-Zone. You can wear it all over your face, however I tend to use it only on the places I need it to not waste it. You can then go ahead and apply your foundation and watch how easily it glides on over the top. I LOVE the results, although it does not make pores disappear (no product can do that) it does make them seem smaller and definitely not as noticeable. Any acne, scars or fine lines are smoothed away as well - it's a perfect primer!
You can wear this on its own as it does appear matte at first however you will need to keep it with you for a top up during the day - but in a handy little compact it makes the task very easy. Alternatively you could sweep a small amount of powder to any oily parts. Having said that I am glad because it does not dry my skin out or end up looking patchy or chalky, so anyone with dry skin will love this. In fact anyone at all will LOVE this as it is suitable for all skin types. If you are going to wear this on its own I would bear in mind that it only comes in one form or shade as its called 'Crystal Nude' for the reason that it does not add any colour to your skin so you may want to add some concealer for some extra coverage.
Which brings me to the second way in which you can wear this product. Once you have put your foundation on, using the sponge again you can gently and neatly dab some product onto the areas you want to control the shine - I tend to apply some to my nose and forehead. I love the way it makes my make up look and feel - my make up has more staying power and the oil control is amazing. Alternatively, if you can't decide which way to wear it you can be greedy like me and do a bit of both!
Dior claim that this product 'offers all skin types a texture that acts like an optical filler to erase shine and flaws while revealing the living matter of nude skin.' Meaning that your skin will look like a better version of itself! So if your trying to do a 'no make up' make up look, or fool your boyfriend into thinking you are a natural beauty then this is the one! Dior has also developed its very first 'optical effect crystalline formula' which hence a guess at where the name came from!
Overall, I am very happy with this product as it satisfies my skins needs without clogging my pores it making it appear cakey. Thank you Dior! Retailing at £27 it is very high end and very expensive however it does have amazing quality and a little does go a long way. If your not too sure about spending that amount on a primer then go to your local department store or large Boots and ask to test it first, that way you will know if it is for you for sure!
Available at Boots, department stores that stock Dior and all good online make up stores. If your make up bag could talk, it would have all ready left with your credit card to buy this!
I bought this product three weeks ago. I have never been a Christian Dior make-up or skincare fan just for the reason that I prefer other brands that I think are better value for money. Dior is just a little bit out of my price range. However, the packaging from Dior is always of very high quality and looks very expensive. But packaging is not what makes the product in my books, it is the product inside the packaging that I am bothered about.
What Made Me Purchase From Dior?
Well I have a very good friend that works on Dior, she is always trying to persuade me to buy from her (I know that she makes a lovely bit of commission on what she sells) and I told her that I was looking for a make-up base to keep oily skin at bay during the day. This was the product she showed me Diorskin Crystal Nude Natural Matte Skin Perfector in the 001 invisible colour. This is apparently the only colour it comes in (it looks white in the packaging but comes out invisible). Well as she showed the compact to me and explained the benefits I was very impressed. But I will never buy a product without trying it first so she sat me down, she removed my make-up, applied this product as a make-up base and then put my foundation and powder on afterwards. I bought the product a few days later because it really did do the trick.
The Low-Down Of This Product...
This product is not just a make-up base (primer) but it can also be used over the top of make-up during the day to reduce shine, it doesn't disrupt your make-up and what I liked most of all is that it does not give you a powdery finish, just a gorgeous silky appearance. I find that during the day normally I constantly touch up my make-up with a mattifying powder and then by the end of the day, my make-up is powdery, orange (due to the build up of powder) and looks very unnatural. This product removes the problems.
This product comes in a gorgeous silver compact, in one half of the compact is the product and the other half of the compact contains the sponge. One half of the sponge has a really silky/velvety feel and the other half has a latex type feel. The silky side is for touch ups during the day so less of the product is used. Then the latex feel side is for using the product as a primer so as more product can be picked up on the sponge. When applying it I have to rub the sponge quite hard on the product and then apply it all over my face after my moisturiser prior to my foundation. It instantly gives my skin a silky feel and a perfected look to my skin (refining the look of pores around my nose too). It can of course be worn alone without foundation. But foundation is a must have on my skin every single day. So I apply my foundation instantly afterwards with a foundation brush. I have been very impressed with how the foundation goes onto my skin after using the Crystal Nude because it goes on effortlessly and blends to perfection.
Then during the day after wearing make-up for about 4 to 5 hours I then reapply the Crystal Nude with the silk side of the sponge. I apply it very delicately all over, it takes me just 30 seconds and leaves my skin shine free and my make-up looking perfect again. I really cannot explain in words how amazing this product is!
So How Does This Dior Product Work At Reducing Shine?
It contains invisible silicone microspheres which work to create a light reflecting illusion to the skin. This allows the skin to look more perfected and evened out yet you still cannot tell that anything has been applied to the skin, it is completely invisible. It instantly erases shine and mattifies the skin due to its crystalline formula (a lightweight optical illusion formula) with the help of the different textures of the sponge.
What Is The Retail Price?
This product contains 7.5g of the product and retails at £27.00 which is quite a reasonable price for Dior. I have previously purchased an Estee Lauder and Clarins primer which are very similar prices too. Dior can be bought in many stores including Boots, Debenhams, House of Fraser and independent stores or online.
Who Is This Product For?
I think this product is perfect for anybody with either a dry/combination skin type (with oil in the t-zone) or for an oily to oily skin type (oily all over the face). I have incredibly sensitive skin so tend to have to stick to brands such as, Clinique which are fragrance free but I had absolutely no problems with this Dior product (no breakouts or skin irritations) so I would say that even sensitive skins could use this product.
I am adding an ingredients list because it is not incredibly long and I know some people like to check the ingredients: Polymethsilsesquioxane, hydrogenated polyisobutene, dimethicone, tridecl trimellitate, C30-45 olefin, ethylhexl hydroxystearate, dimethicone crosspolymer, phenoxyethenol.
I absolutely love this product, it does everything I wanted it to do and it looks incredibly natural and feels as if I am wearing nothing. My only concern would be that I think I will use the product quite quickly because I have to really rub at the formula in order to get enough product onto the sponge to transfer onto my face (however, this issue will not alter my rating of this product). After three weeks of use I can see a light dip in the formula which I can see getting deeper quite quickly. However, if it has answered all of my concerns for reducing shine and it is not at a ridiculous price then I do not mind repeat purchasing this product.
