I originally heard about this product from Sali Hughes, the beauty columnist in The Guardian newspaper. I have a tendancy towards watery eyes and sometimes my eyes start streaming as soon as I go out of the door and face the slightest bit of wind. This has caused me issues with mascaras running and can be embarrassing! I wished my mascara was waterproof. I almost wondered whether I should just quit wearing mascara all together. Then I heard of this. Sali Hughes said it is often used for brides to stop their mascara running through any tears on their big day, so I decided to try it.
It comes in a white mascara tube containing 9 ml of product.
The product description states it is like "a raincoat for lashes, to protect mascara from sea, pool, tears and rain". I apply my usual mascara and then add a coat or two of Clarins Fix Mascara over the top to act as a transparent sealant. It is important to make sure you fully coat the lashes in Fix Mascara, both underneath and on the top, so that they are completely protected.
I found that it really is strongly waterproof. My mascara held up against my watery eyes as well as rain and wind. I have not tested it in a swimming pool but according to Clarins supposedly the mascara should even last while swimming. It also stops any smudging which I sometimes got if I accidentally touched my eye.
The one negative point is that, even though Fix Mascara is transparent, it seems to slightly dilute and dull the colour of the mascara. Mascaras that are a true black seem to appear less vibrant and more of a muted charcoal black once I put the waterproof coat on top of them. After the Fix Mascara has been used a lot, you can see that the product inside the tube is turning a horrible grey colour instead of clear due to the brush picking up some black mascara from the lashes.
Over all, the product definitely does work and live up to its promise. However, it gets quite expensive if you have to buy two products - normal mascara and a separate waterproof coat - so I think I will try a few waterproof mascaras to hopefully do the job in one step at a cheaper price but if I can't find one that is waterproof enough or if I know my mascara will be getting wet for some reason, I would have no hestitation in buying this again as it is definitely reliable.
